My American high school has A and B days. Some students switch classes on these days so they end up taking the same classes all year except every other day. I do not have this schedule, I have the same classes every day but only for a semester and then I switch. At lunch, I eat with different people every day because our class schedules affect our lunch times. The schedules at my school look like this: First period 8:20-9:45 Second period 9:45-11:00 Mentorship/Community time 11:00-12:00 Third period 12:00-1:15 Lunch* 1:15-1:40 Fourth period 1:40-3:00 *I have the latest lunch (after third period), but other students have their lunch after second period or halfway through third period) My school doesn't have bells/alarms so it's almost impossible to be late because there are technically no set arrival and dismissal times. We also don't have lockers. In America especially, this can be seen as problematic given our gun-in-backpack issue. My school isn't exactly within that stereotype, everybody there wants to learn and it's insanely quiet, even in the cafeterias so we aren't very prone to violence. I've seen one fight my entire time attending this school and it was the most silent thing ever (not typical for American schools, you know, the whole "Fight! Fight! Fight!" with phones out shtick), some dude got thrown to the ground and it was over. My grading system is kind of weird. We don't take standardized tests, except for in math classes. We mainly do projects and quizzes (we'll call these X quizzes and Y quizzes because there are different types of quizzes). 70% of my grade has to do with projects. 21% of my grade relies on X quizzes. 9% of my grade relies on Y quizzes. You have to complete every project (and complete it well) to pass the class you are taking. If you do not do one of the projects or you do poorly on one then you will fail the entire class and will be required to retake it. X quizzes are quizzes you have to pass in order to pass the class. If you do not do one of the X quizzes or you fail it, you fail the entire class and have to retake it. Y quizzes are quizzes that aren't required to be completed at all, although they are recommended. For both X and Y quizzes, an 8/10 or higher is an automatic 100% while a 7/10 or lower is an automatic 0%. You do not want to get a 7/10 or lower on an X quiz. My school is completely public, it's just atypical (for us Americans anyway).

Not to mention that if you hate a class, you’re stuck there for at least an hour and a half, if not more. It also sucks because you have to figure out what day is what when you come back from breaks, which often leads to going to the wrong first period. It also means that you may only have friends in your classes every other day, or you can get stuck with all your worst/hardest subjects on one of the days.

I wish I went to an American school cuz I live in Australia and we have uniforms and we’re not allowed to have phones and we have an open school so all the classrooms are separate and when it’s winter every class we have to stand and wait in shorts and a top at the door for our teachers to let us in .

everyone acts as if school in america is so easy when it’s not. we have ap ib classes and we have to do so many extracurriculars on top of those too. i have 7 classes a day, and 5 r ap, plus extracurriculars. my friend had 7 ap classes last year and also was president of multiple clubs and did dance and stuff. last year, with only 2 ap classes, i spent about 3-7 hours per night doing hw and studying. we also can’t have phones in class, our teachers collect them at the beginning of class.

My story: so I have a rare medical condition which I get sick very easily and really bad migraines and sometimes seizures and fainting. But anyways I went to public school my whole life and I had an amazing nurse and since I. Need a lot of attention when it comes to helping me when I don’t feel well at school, my nurse is great at that. She knew what to do (since I was there almost everyday for 1-2 hours). However, a year ago my nurse left and then there was a new nurse and me and my parents had a chat with her and what she should do when I come to the nurses office everyday, and it seemed fine until one day I had really bad migraines and I came in to take some medication and lay down but then she didn’t let me lay down and told me I was overrreacting (I have a medical condition so I am not overreacting). Anyways, this happened more and more often so we decided to go to a private school. We found this school that was a couple of blocks away from our house and it is for special needs/people with medical conditions. We decided to apply to it and we got a response that I was eligible for the school! This school has many nurses and staff that will recognize you and they will give you everything you need. So we went to the nurse night where I met my nurse and she was awesome and so nice. The best thing is that if I have to skip a lot of school which I do, I can follow along with a homeschool program that is part of the school and I can go on zoom calls with my teachers if I feel up for it. I have been going to this new school for a while and I love it so much everyone is so nice and I also get to brag to my siblings because I get to sleep in because my school starts later and ends earlier😂.

I guess it’s just different in Canada, but at my schools we have classes every other day, but they’re still on 70 minutes long, not 110. We have five classes a day so you can take ten a year. How is it possible to stay focused on one subject for that long? My classes are 70 minutes and I always feel like the last 20 minutes of class are pointless bc everyone is done everything and it always ends up just being people sitting and talking or sneaking their phones for the last bit of class and waiting for it to end.

For example let’s say your schedule is this one day Math, ELA , sicence, art the next day it would History, Theatre, P.E, ceramics
