I live in West London and as far as predatory birds go, locally we traditionally get Kestrels, Sparrow-Hawks and Buzzards (and have several nesting pairs of Peregrine Falcon on a couple of the taller buildings) but since last November, we've also had a trio of Red Kites in the area! Had never seen one before - they are *freaking massive* - the alarm calls from everything else when they're overhead is the best way to spot them, the birds go crazy 😂 Absolutely incredible animals ❤

Kestrels are actually falcons, not hawks. Hawks are in the family accipitridae and kestrels are in the family falconidae. Notice the black eyes, the teardrop markings and the pointed wings. Cute little guy!

When I was 16 I was blessed with finding a baby kestrel and raising him for a few months until he was strong enough to survive on his own. I loved that little guy. Beautiful creatures!

Common names can be confusing. A sparrow hawk in the U.S. (American Kestrel - Falco sparverius) is not the same species as referred to as a sparrow hawk in Eurasia (Eurasian sparrowhawk - Accipiter nisus). Completely unrelated.

He actually looks terrified. When he gapes his beak, he's panting from stress. His heartrate is elevated, making him overheat. His eyes are also kind of bulging, because he's got them open extra-wide. It's hard to tell because they're so dark and because falcon eyes are pretty round to start with.
