You mentioned THE polio vaccine a lot in this vid, but there's like five or six different polio vaccines. It's only one of the five or six polio vaccines that RFK doesn't like. It didn't go through the same trials that the other ones did and he just wants that one to be temporarily pulled from the market to go through the proper trials. People who get polio will still be able to get one of the other polio vaccines.

My sister has autism, when she was a baby the doctor told my mom that she’ll never be able to live a normal life, talk normal or at all, she won’t be able to eat for herself, bathe herself, use the restroom by herself etc. my mom went to a group of Parent’s were they all share their struggles with their kids that have autism. A lot of them just gave up on their kids. My mom left and said that place was depressing and said that if we raise my sister to live in this world like she’s normal she will be fine. Feels like ancient history now. My sister now is working and going to college driving, and talks fine. So I feel treating my sister normal was the big factor in her success.

Autism is a spectrum, and girls are notorious for masking which is why they go under the radar often. Just because she has a high-functioning type doesn't mean she doesn't have any struggles that you may not know of. Yes, it's good that your sister was treated normal, but that may not work for other people. I too was treated normally to a point. I'm also an autistic woman, I talk alright and went to university. But I am extremely asocial. I don't have the need to socialize and I don't have any instincts that make social interactions a no-brainer. I don't remember faces. Me being bullied only reinforced this attitude that I'm better off alone. My sensitivity and empathy is so high that I get emotionally burned out and become bitter. When someone was getting reprimanded, I felt guilty for something I did not do in their stead, while they didn't care. Obviously, my autism was way more apparent when I was a kid. I only started speaking coherently when I was 4.
@deaj8450
@deaj8450 9 күн бұрын
@MonochromeObserver So then don't socialize if you don't want to. Do what works for you. No one is advocating a blanket one size fits all solution for every single person. Everyone has struggles whether they are 'normal' or not that only they really comprehend. But it takes time to figure out what works for you, because everyone goes through their own journey figuring out life. I probably am on the spectrum, I can't say for sure, but I just be myself like I always have and don't think about it. Whatever works for me is fine for me, regardless of why it works. I understand the guilty thing. When I watch TV or movies, especially when I was younger, I basically could not bring myself to even look at the screen if someone was getting in trouble with an authority figure. I have vivid memories of feeling extremely awful and embarrassed during Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets as a child when they first find the cat petrified and everyone thinks the three heroes did it. Like to the point of not being able to watch the movie at all because that one scene made me feel so guilty and uncomfortable. But that is just life. My solution was not watching movies and just going through life and growing up. I don't advocate my solutions to navigating life for anyone else cause I'm a lonely weird jerk.

Possibly hot take: the awareness of autism has made the symptoms of autism worse, especially in those who self diagnose. I fell out with a friend a few years after they diagnosed themselves because they gradually changed from somebody who had some small quirks but was an otherwise normal and functioning adult to somebody who tried to infantilise every conversation and never take responsibility for the way they talked to people (but would constantly call out everybody else for even the smallest slight against them). They weren't like that before. The rise of tiktok and social awareness of autism and self diagnosing changed things in just about 2 years after knowing them for 8 years prior.
@scubarubanzaii
@scubarubanzaii 9 күн бұрын
Facts. One of my friends is a social worker who deals with people from autism to major drug abusers and many in between- she specifically lists her hot take as a dislike of things like TikTok causing people to falsely self-identify things like autism, ADHD, PTSD, and the like just for social brownie points. She dislikes this trend because it belittles the reality, experiences, and aid the truly diagnosed have. She’s an extremely strong socialist leftist feminist too.

The self diagnosis crisis is definitely a problem, because most people making self diagnosis lack the medical education to recognize that many conditions can share symptoms.And sometimes you don't have symptoms of any condition you just have, as you said, small quirks If all of us were to look at symptoms of various spectrum disorders, we've all probably matched one or three symptoms on a bad day It's like googling a stomachache.Obviously, it's just the bad taco bell, but google's gonna tell you.It's colon cancer

Yeah, true. But to be honest it is easier to fix that than you may think. Education on how to shop for and cook real food, and how to exercise properly is a really big first step. The government should subsidize whole foods at grocery stores, provide more welfare benefits if they buy whole foods instead of processed junk, and provide healthcare tax cuts for those who pass a health examination each year. If they make it easier to live a healthy life rather than an unhealthy one, then more people will naturally choose the healthy option.

All that does is force kids to eat the trash school food which was(is) literally just as bad as the things they were eating from the vending machines. And yes, it was tyrannical. The solution is not a decree on what people can and cannot eat. The solution is the corporate carrot. Subsidize the corporations who make food that isn't complete garbage. Corporations who don't adapt will not survive the market, this is literally an anti-market tactic, so the left should love it, though maybe not as much as the full-bore decree on what consumers are allowed to stuff down their gullets. Food in general would become healthier, but people would still have the option to eat what they want. I 100% blame my daughter’s school and her father for instilling awful eating habits in her. Anytime she wasn’t at school, she’d HIDE food. I’d buy fruits and veggies and the best healthy snacks you could think of, and I cooked at least 4 days per week, but she’d go to her Dad’s and eat McDonald’s and a pint of ice cream. I had no control over her when she was there. He was mentally/verbally abusive, an alcoholic, and I never was able to fight him financially in court to force supervised visitation for him. She’s now 20 and is fighting to lose weight. My heart is broken for her, I did everything I could, I fought hard for her and in the end she was still instilled with trauma and terrible habits. I tried so hard. I talked to her endlessly. She just started going back to the gym with me and is eating a little better, praise God. I’m so very worried about her…I’m praying she gets on the right path!!!

Coming from a “former kid’s” perspective: That’s exactly how I was raised. Guardian who “own’s” me is not at all interested in playing or interacting with me when I was smaller. Kept the other more willing guardian away from me and villainized him. I was fed and over-protected like a luxury object, a belonging. My interests were always discouraged. I could not make attachments or form healthy social relationships because I moved on average every 2 years for mere no reason other than her entertainment. I was taught no survival skills or social skills by that person, and when I act not in their favor, I will be villainized. The person knows little common sense herself, and She will gladly use others to put me in situations that would force me to comply with her will. I was never treated or respected as a human being. All of my life I felt like an animal in a zoo. My zoo keeper loves me to death, but because she has never done anything close to direct harm, I cannot stop her. Half of my seemingly young life, a voice echoed in my chest every single day: if I didn’t _ her, I will _ myself first from such insanity. I was unable to see myself alive or healthy the next day for several years. I didn’t think I could live past my teens. - by random stranger on the internet

@ this is a more true feeling than a lot of people realize. After my parents divorce, my mom got full custody, we moved around for years, never getting permanent friends. Us kids would get cheap meals, or pizza from a “boyfriend” that would come over with Dominoes and Blockbuster, not knowing what they were doing at the time. Knowing damn well know that she was more interested in living her “best” life and using us kids as a scapegoat, excuse, and/or leverage to get her way. When she got remarried, we again moved, away from my dad who followed us to be able to visit us. Her new husband, is an absolute beta pushover that never taught me a single thing about survival or work ethic. While my brother (6 years older) ran away and moved in with my dad, got taught everything about self sufficient help and work ethic, and after I turned 18 and was able to willingly see my dad more than 1 weekend a month, I learned so much from him. My mom would let me get home from school and she would never check in on my to make sure I was doing my work, she’d just let me jump straight to my babysitter (Xbox) and forget about the day. I hardly was able to graduate because of the habits I formed from lack of discipline and parenting. I work directly with my brother now, and I talk with him almost every day about how I feel lazy/stupid next to him, because he learned so much, like mechanizing, building houses, operating equipment etc. my brother has built a multi million dollar business with just my dads help, and now mine, and I barely have motivation to walk out my door most mornings. The zookeeper comment is a literal gut punch because that’s how I was raised. Like an animal, paraded around for her liking to impress people, more than actually push me to succeed. My mom criticized and villainized my father, to the point my sister doesn’t recognize him as our dad, and she fails to see the recent success I’ve had, the success my brother has had, is because our dad pushes us to be better everyday, where as our mom got it instilled in my sisters head, that we are all fine the way we are and the world will help us with our needs, and my sister is a trailer trash, lazy, and refuses to listen to my brother or I about our dad, and she’ll immediately hang up, thinking he was the problem, when he was the one who truly wanted to be in our lives. I still talk with my mom, but it’s hard to “love” her after seeing how much my dad has driven me to be a better human, a better worker, and even a better uncle, after her raising us like she’s a zookeeper for more than 12 years after her and my dads divorce

The issue about this is, it's autism because you have genetically different brain connections. The structure is different. And thus I am unable to properly and naturally understand these cues. My mother has Aspergers and always thought this is normal. It's genetic. Socialization and all that helps. Don't take me wrong, it helps to learn how to ... basically override this PHYSICAL inability. But no, I can not fix it ever in my life. But it does help to cope, basically. Yeah but the problem is the goalpost moving over all these years, I think many have been misdiagnosed over the years when they’re simply weird or not social for environmental circumstances rather than something genetic, and the rates of autism going up is problematic. Something has fundamentally altered in our reproduction that is causing this and I think two things can be right at once. Asmon has a good take that is most definitely applicable to a lot of people, RFK isn’t wrong either because in his day people weren’t allergic or had autism like we do today and diet can be a major factor. We essentially consume chemicals everyday, and coincidentally as food got worse, our mental and physical health declined in rates not seen in other parts of the world.

Except he didn't say that autism is caused by lack of social interaction. He said traits of it can be exacerbated. Take learning a foreign language for example. You can learn the language by reading books, doing writing drills, and listening to audio, but unless you actually get verbally conversational with people, your fluency will suck and overall social engagement will drop as you withdraw because you feel you can't communicate. By having kids socialize in person, with real-time consequences, instead of being le edgelords and tough guys behind screens, they become more familiar with normal human interactions. "Talk shit, get hit" is a very useful street lesson in diplomacy.

The root symptom of my diagnosis, however, (unwillingness to accept authority) has not changed over the years. Anecdotal note: I suspect at this point that it was never a mental disorder, but a strength of character that was unappreciated and considered a disruptive problem within large hierarchical structures that I was assigned low status within. Solution: Instead of taking the fog-inducing drugs forever, I redesigned half my life to run a small business so that I have no direct authority figure in my day to day life, which solved almost all my problems.

Some people are meant to question authority and go their own way, and some are meant to put their ego down and follow. And both are needed

On the rights thing, what Bernie is proposing is what's legally referred to as a "positive right," which is something that you have the right to be given to you. For example, one of the only positive rights I personally agree with is the right to have parents. America is founded on inalienable "negative rights," which aren't given to you. They exist from the moment you're alive and can't be taken away from you. The way that negative rights are violated is through force. The way positive rights are given is through force.

26:53 As an autistic as a former teacher who taught in a psychiatric hospital for years, psychiatrists diagnosis how autistic a person is almost exclusively on how well we can socialize. If we socialize too well regardless of other issues we can’t get diagnosed, which is a major issue with female autistics. So in the way socialization doesn’t change how autistics process information or emotion, no it doesn’t make someone more or less autistic. In the way therapists and doctors measure autism, socialization is everything because it’s the only metric they can visibly measure through observation.

Autism used to be seen as a serious disorder affecting a small percentage of the population, and girls were rarely diagnosed at all. Now we know it's actually very common and many cases are mundane enough to be missed without overzealous screening. Screening alone is enough to account for the rise in the rate of diagnosis. People just really have no idea of the shift in the perception of autism. It's like comparing how people used think about infections diseases as compared to after germ theory was proven, it's just incomparable. Asmon's point about socialising and autism isn't quite correct but it's not quite wrong either. Proper socialisation doesn't prevent autism, but it can greatly alleviate the symptoms of it. If someone is less symptomatic, they are less likely to be diagnosed. Also certain social disorders can be miss diagnosed as autism, especially those which are linked with various changes in modern society such as the rise of social media. So yes, poor socialisation does increase the diagnosis rate, but not the number of real cases. Autism is something you are born with, it can not be acquired and it never goes away.

Good points, but you're missing a crucial detail. The diagnostic criteria for higher functioning autism wasn't in common use until the late 80's. Mainly because of Hans Asperger being a member of a certain party in the 1940's. His papers weren't translated into English for 50 or so years. Once his diagnostic criteria started being applied in screening, you see an explosion in ASD cases immediately after.

Yeah or it's just being severely over-diagnosed now and every socially awkward kid that would otherwise be fine if they weren't so sheltered is being labelled as "autism". Just in the same way that every overstimulated kid hopped up on sugar is being diagnosed with "ADHD" when most of them just need to develop better self control and structure in their lives.

well said. it’s a complex issue, and i think a lot of people that either don’t have autism or someone close to them has it, have misconceptions about it and why it exists. it’s simply a difference in how the brain develops, it unfortunately over laps in symptoms with a lot of other disorders as well. I have a cousin who is clearly autistic, and had been her whole life and i still have family members that just thinks she’s shy lol. The way i look at something like autism, is their brain is just running a different operating system

@ good point. I wrote in a different comment that the lack of socialising doesn't cause autism, it’s more accurate to say that socialisation can cause autistic people to develop better ways of masking their autism, and therefore a lack of socialisation can be a condition for a lack of masking of their autism. I have several autistic people in my immediate family, and I also can see the same traits shared by family members in the previous generations, except that they were never formally diagnosed. So I can clearly see it's definitely linked to heredity in some way. It's a different type of brain, and as much as it has disadvantages I've also seen some advantages as well.

I hate when people say sh*t like 'are you really going to defend so and so?' These people aren't listening to the issue being discussed, they are making a decision based on the person presenting the discussion. They aren't engaging with the argument itself. Instead, they’re reacting emotionally to the person or group involved rather than critically assessing the issue at hand. What this signals to me is that 1) they’ve already judged the person in question and assume any defense of them is automatically invalid and 2) they are sidestepping the argument by shifting focus from the topic to the credibility (or perceived lack thereof) of the person being discussed. I don't like Trump but if he is deporting illegal convicted criminals I can put aside my feelings of the man to say in regards to that issue I think he is doing the right thing. Agreeing on that issue does not make me a Trump supporter and even if I was it is irrelevant to the discussion. This is what causes most of the divisiveness in the United States IMO.

The thing with autism also, is the fact that socialising helps but normal kids don't like hanging out with autistic kids. You're naturally predisposed to shy away from weird people, doubly as a kid when you don't have knowledge to form context. This also exacerbates autism in kids who only get negative interaction with people, causing them to cocoon later in life. I speak as someone who grew up in the early 00s like this, autistic kids these days have so many coping mechanisms to avoid this it may as well be Sunder armour.

Needless to say after practicing for 12 years now no one is able to tell I’m autistic unless I mention it. I turned from an arm flapping, screeching, kid that would use force to explain things to people. Into someone who’s treated as the most calm and smartest in the room. Child neurologist here. I don't know why Asmon's opinion about autism was so controversial to people on this stream. Of course lack of socialization has a major impact on autism symptoms and development. Not having to have a voice conversation with other humans regularly surely has an impact on development of social skills. If you think nurture is not a big component of autism symptomatology then what is the point of speech therapy and behavioral therapy for autism. If it's purely genetic or epigenetic why do we even attempt to rehabilitate and teach autistic children socialization. We live in a trigger first society. Just get triggered by what Asmon is saying rather than pause and give thought to the content of his words.

@@thecomicsarereal because anyone who doesn't socialize will have bad social skills. It has nothing to do with autism. It's a human thing so there was no need to single out autistic people. And we have talk therapy and such because we can LEARN to get better. That doesn't mean it isn't genetic. If it was nurture then why would there be families with one autistic kid and one or more non autistic children? They'd raise the children more or less the same in the same environment thus drastically increasing the chances of each kid having autism and yet... Unless there's scientific proof stating otherwise, autism is biological. Maybe not entirely genetic but logic dictates it's nature over nurture.

Asmongold, you’re dead wrong about this. Not everyone with Asperger’s (and I say Asperger’s because lumping it into ASD was a mistake) is ‘cooked.’ I have it, and I’ve been socially successful my whole life. I made friends easily in kindergarten, daycare, and school, and I was even popular. I’m fully capable of understanding and mastering social skills-I just focus on my goals instead, which is a choice, not a limitation. There are plenty of people like me who are intelligent, driven, and successful. Lumping everyone under the ASD umbrella oversimplifies things to the point of absurdity. There are different types of people with Asperger’s, ranging from those who struggle to those who are high-functioning and indistinguishable from neurotypicals. I fall into the latter, and there are plenty of others like me. You wouldn’t even know unless I told you. Also, the term ‘neurotypical’ itself is weird-it’s like saying ‘cisgender,’ a woke buzzword I want nothing to do with. I’m conservative, I reject all that progressive nonsense, and I see Donald Trump as a role model for entrepreneurship and success. I have major business ambitions, and I focus on what actually matters-building something, not obsessing over labels. Point is, Asperger’s doesn’t mean what you think it does. Some people are ‘cooked,’ sure, but plenty of us are just as, if not more, capable than anyone else. People need to stop acting like it’s all the same thing.
