Consider a Labrador and can't decide between an American Labrador vs English Labrador? Watch this video and learn everything about the differences of the English Labrador vs American Labrador.
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most famous dog breeds in the world. They are great show and working dogs, but due to the high competition of creating the best show dogs and working dogs, breeders are now only focusing on one of the two areas.
The American Labrador is slighly taller and slender in appearance. They are more muscular, have a thinner coat and a longer neck and muzzle. All this contributes to their great working abilities.
The English Labrador is only bred for show competitions. They have a sturdier body with a deep barrel chest and have shorter legs.
Which one do you prefer? The American Labrador or English Labrador?

It really is this simple, if you want a dog for strictly a pet, choose the English, if you want a high energy working/hunting dog that requires lots of outdoor time, get the American. They both are fantastic, loving dogs! I have had American labs my entire adult life and love the way they adapt to the family. I just got my first English puppy 3 weeks ago. I chose him because I'm getting older and slower, and he definitely takes less of my energy to fulfill his needs for exercise. Either way, if you want a loyal, happy, loving family pet, get a Labrador!

Our English chocolate lab passed away in 2015 after 9.5 years. He was extremely intelligent and had endless energy to play, but he was also a huge cuddler and super chill. He was the only dog I've met who had zero fear of the vacuum; I could literally vacuum underneath him while he stood still. I usually had to ask him to move to another room so I could vacuum where he was laying. I also remember he was very disciplined with people food. I could leave my plate of pizza on the coffee table and go get a napkin, and he wouldn't even so much as sniff what was on my plate. Such a good boy
@denali9449
@denali9449 2 жыл бұрын
Our yellow English was like that with a vacuum. He would lay on his bed and watch you run it all around him, heck, I could hold the hose on his fur when brushing him - he did not care. Canons, fireworks, the vacuum, any loud noise and it did not phase him at all. Food on the other hand was his downfall. Well "unattended food" that is. We lived on a lake and I had just finished grilling 10 pounds of chicken breasts (boneless) and a boat crashed into our dock. My wife and I ran out to see what was happening and he made his move. The platter was in the middle of the table with 4 places set and the chairs pushed in. When I came back into the house everything looked the same except the platter was empty; the chairs were where they belonged and not a dish, fork or glass was out of place. I figured my wife had put the chicken in the fridge. Nope. One look at my boy who was always trim showed a huge belly and of course he was smiling. Called our old country vet and after he got done laughing told us to let him sleep it off.After a rather healthy bowel movement the next morning he was his normal self. He never would have given that platter a second look if we had been in the house.

I have had both. The American was a more aggressive retriever and easier to train for duck hunting. The British lab I had possessed a wonderful personality and was, over all, easier to manage in the field. She minded better and was more patient. My next one will be a British lab that I will train to hunt. They have the instincts, you just have to develop them.

As I watched the video, I imagined my best match for a lab would plop somewhere in the middle, like a cross between an American and an English. My young American lab tended to go deaf trailing a bird in the field and flushed them out of range until we put in the work over a period of years while she grew up and settled down. An English lab with a lower drive that could stay interested in an upland hunt at a modest pace would be just my speed. And when duck hunting, I don't really care about a dog making a spectacular leap into the water and speed boating out to the bird - I don't need a trial bred dog. A round trip in slow mode still gets the bird to hand. On the other hand, there are times a high drive is needed for a dog to brush crash through big stands of cattails and put in a heap of athletic work to come up with the bird, but that scenario isn't typical in the area I hunt now. Suffice to say, I like your thinking while having experience with both kinds. An English lab with encouragement and training just might be the best balance for a combination hunter and easy going family pet.

I've owned two Yellow English Labs, Buddy Nr 1 and Buddy Nr 2. Both passed from health issues at a little over 10 years old. After grieving for two years after my last boy passed, I got an 8 week old Black American Lab male, Buddy Nr 3, who will be one year old in about 2 weeks. He's been quite the challenge, but I don't regret it. Big plus: my old Frisbee skills are returning! He gets two 15 minute sessions of frisbee daily. A tired Lab is a happy Lab. I also had a black lab/yellow & chocolate mix named Joe when I was a kid and a black lab/pitbull mix named Brutus, they we're the best as well. Joe was super protective and loving, atleast to me anyways, he didn't care for anyone else except my dad, he was definately my dog, my dad took me over to his friends house a few months after his Akita attacked me when I was 5, she tore my forehead open to the skull, had to have 18 stitches across my forehead and my left eyebrow is split. I still can't see a black and white Akita without a bit of anxiety. I've gotten over it for the most part, but I have my moments. I have severe PTSD from a few bad things that have happened. Eddie has really helped with it when I have anxiety attacks. He will lay up against me and force me to pet him until I snap out of it. Thank God for dogs, and cats for that matter. They have helped me through some really hard times in my life. Stay safe out there everyone!

Our boy was an English style lab. He lived to be 11 and was a wonderful dog. He attained CGC, CD AND CDX obedience titles, and was joyful when he was working in obedience...he really loved to perform and to please. He was so gentle and playful with children. His pedigree included several Dickendall ancestors. A warning though...he was as energetic and mischievous as an American style lab until he was about 2. It was a relief when he calmed down a bit. His health problems included knee joint repair, and recurrent ear infections.

I’ve owned both but I prefer the more slender working American lab. I find dogs bred for work are more energetic and clever. (Although all labs are smart.) The heavier labs often have more structural issues. Love the big labs too but after spending 12,000 on new knees and spinal surgeries, never again! My lighter lab has competed in agility, frisbee and works everyday as my guide dog. I don’t mind the increase in training as I’m not looking for a couch dog. My guide dog is now 8 1/2 and I’m starting a new puppy next month. looking forward to it! The smaller sized American labs fit much better under plane and bus seats. This is VERY misleading overall. Labs are LABS when it comes to energy, need for exercise, intelligence and trainability… they are a wonderful breed if you have the time to put into them (they need it). Like any breed, every specific dog is different in their individual personality. So any dog will have a variance in their personality. My 15 yr old English passed away a few years ago and she was amazingly smart and very well trained in obedience and agility. However, she was nuts in regards to energy! That’s why we started agility training to begin with. It gave her an outlet for her energy and she was so motivated by it. Everyone kept saying, oh she’ll calm down when she’s a yr or two. She didn’t. Ok maybe 3, maybe 6 yrs old?…NOPE. She was 9 when there was a noticeable calm. Even then, she was pretty high energy for most of her life. She was a truly amazing dog and I still miss her terribly. We are getting ready to get a new English lab puppy in a couple weeks and I am so curious to find out her personality. It’s been a long time since I had a lab puppy in my house, it’s going to be interesting! 🦮

Definitely prefer American. We lost our two over the past year. One was 14 (Silver) and one was almost 12 (Yellow). Great dogs…miss them every day.

hey just wondering? ive seen research done that silver labs arent fully labs and that arnt always bred right? we already have a black lab and have fallen inlove with a silver lab puppy but would prefer to know

@@clairecolville5594 at this point silvers are like any other color. The quality of the breeder is more important than the color. Our silver developed diabetes in his later years but our yellow had osteosarcoma. I think it’s random like with humans.

Our family started since 1975 and has had American labs since 2002, but being that parents are in their retirement years, the last 25 years since 2002 has been English Labradors and we have not turned back.....Ms. Lacey was our sweet angel that will live in infamy....... Bailey, our 10 year old yellow lab is our love and continues to be so and our 2 year old black lab named Brenna is our last, and she's full of life and spunk!!!

This info is so spot on, thanks for this vid! My family couldn't figure out why our new lab pup looks so diffrent. 9 out of 10(honestly speaking, I feel like it's 10 out of 10)Labrador dogs we see here in Korea are American labs. Finally found out our goofball is an English lab. lol We were so concerned about his athleticism not knowing the differences in diffrent types of labs. Just shoked how the Korean lab kennel didn't inform us about this, they are one of very few kennel specializes in Lab dogs here. Totally blown away🤭

We are extremely active people, so we have only had American labs. Strangely, when we were first introduced to a lab breeder, they didn't use the term "American" vs "English" labs. They used the term "Show" vs "Hunting" lab. I'm guessing they did this because it was more intuitive which was which. But for a few years after we owned our first lab, when people would ask us if we had "English" vs "American" , we didn't know what they were talking about.

I guess it depends on where you are from. I'm German, and we never use the terms English and American to distinguish between the two types. We simply call them "Showlinie" (show line) or "Arbeitslinie" (working line)/"Field Trial (FT)". From what I know, the US is the only place where they are called English/American labs.
@TooBarFoo
@TooBarFoo 11 ай бұрын
Yep, in the UK we would use Show line or Working lines. lately I see puppies sold as "chunky" labs. Shorter and much heavier built. A well breed working line lab will live to 14 plus years if they are not over feed, These "Chunky" labs seem to struggle past 8 years.

We have a gorgeous fox red Labrador called Agnes, she is an "American" Lab who was destined to be a working gundog but failed her exams (gun shy). Agnes is now the luckiest Labrador in Wales with a big garden to play in , lots of country walks and her own brook for swimming. She would have made a terrible gun dog. 😂😂😂

Love the shape of the English labs head... It is different than the American one. More block-like. The red fox ones are gorgeous but not a common one , its variation of the yellow ones.

I got myself a black American Lab. His mane is Kenji and he's now a little over a year old. He had been a real trial to begin with, but he's settled down now and I'm so happy to have him...he is turning out to be my best friend. If you get a Lab and are surprised by their lunatic behaviour, stick with them, give them plenty of exercise, be kind and have a trainer in for the first 8 months or so. You won't be sorry.

I have 2 black female labs. One English and one American. The English has insane stamina but less agile, the American is faster and more agile. The English is older now so I am only taking the American with me on mountaineering and I’m telling you, they say they are talented in hunting and being close to family and so on, which I agree, but if you’re into this sport try it. You will be amazed of their natural talent in these harsh environments, their orientation skills and how much they enjoy it. After the third ascent we did together, she is always leading.

This is not American labradors vs English labradors, this is more gundog Labradors (working lines) versus show lines labradors. English and American gundogs are slightly different due to different breeding visions and hunting practices but they have a lot more in common than with show lines.

We’ve had several labs and lab mixes and they all lived to about 14 ( three still living) and have been wonderful dogs. All were adopted. Daily walks, healthy food, healthy weight and lots of activity and love keep them vibrant and young for years. I couldn’t live without dogs and labs are the best for me and my husband , although, as we get older having three is a bit much :)
