In Romania you can tell reliable cars by the options chosen by the taxi companies and taxi drivers, which take take every cent into consideration. Needles to say, nothing has beaten Sandero and Logan yet. I have a Passat for normal usage and a 2013 1.6 Dacia pickup when I do light work on my land and for fishing. The pickup with normal maintenance never caused me any trouble. It's probably gonna stay with me for many years to come.

maybe I'm wrong, but I think that the duster is not a SUV. a SUV is a car that looks somewhat like a car with offroad-capability, but do not try to offroad. the duster on the other hand is a real all terrain vehicle. you should respect its limitations, but it is not just a car that wants to appear to be offroaders, but a real offroader. but I understand, that this is the european side. the american side demands much more offroad capability of an SUV.

Dacias are known for having the opposite philosophy of luxury sports cars, basically using the minimally viable motor/horsepower and infotainment system. But considering that most European countries aren't Germany and are limited to 120/130km/h on highways anyway this usually doesn't matter. Especially onsidering most people only move their own ass plus maybe one passenger and or three days of groceries, so you'll never need it unless you absolutely want fast acceleration.

Hi, Ian! Nice video! I'm an owner of a Dacia 1300 from 1979 (pretty much just like the one at 11:58 except mine is red) and what I can tell you about owning one is that they do indeed break quite a lot, but they are ridiculously easy to repair also because the engine bay was designed in such a way that you have a lot of space. Because they are so repair-friendly, you could say they are quite eco-friendly as well since there still a lot of elderly people daily driving them. I don't daily drive it, it's just for car meets and parades and everytime we take it out for a spin, people turn their heads since this is still considered Romania's people's car and many people have fond memories about them. About later models, I like the early 2000 models more than the current ones as they were basiclly refreshed designes of the same late 60's car they were producing for over 30 years. They looked retro, while still being somewhat modern, especially after 2000 when they introduced EFI and Euro 2 catalyzers (on the same engine they used for more than 30 years). That's also why I think I will buy a 2004 Dacia 1310 (2004 being the last year of production) and daily drive it. Modern Dacia's just look boring in my opinion. They look soulless and made out of plastic. Older ones have an unmistakeable engine sound, when you close the doors they sound like pure metal, the clutch pedal always squeaks, the car always smells like petrol etc. It just feels alive. Anyway, I will now try to attach a few KZbin links that are relevant to the topic. And again, great video! Cheers from Romania! :) Last Dacia 1310 (21st of July 2004) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp_CkmprbL-ajposi=6R4yydD_87Tns-sM 1998 (no, not '88, it's from '98) Carburated Dacia 1310: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGewqoajh5mIbrMsi=M5-077u2Czji9tDb 2003 Dacia 1310 with EFI: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH-ne5yFhLl4bqMsi=UcBWuFv0Sc5pAwVs

It's FWD, but has the Extended Grip system from Renault. I tested it in the forest of Romania, both on muddy and snowy roads. I was quite impressed. Dacia was something of a latecomer to the major European manufacturer scene, but the brand's gradual resurrection since the 1990s is a success story on par with that of Škoda. 🙂 Romania used to have another passenger car brand in the pre-1990s era, Oltcit, a collaboration with Citroen, but it didn't last long. The name was a combination of Citroen and Oltenia, the latter a name of a southern Romanian historical region. (Probably where they assembled those Romanian Citroens ?) The fact that Dacia stuck around and narrowly survived, was by the 1990s, about one of the few positive legacies of the former Romanian dictatorship. A by-and-large local car brand that would slowly recover by the 2000s and then start getting successful internationally. Since Romania is a Romance-speaking country and has long historical ties with France, it's no surprise their passenger car brands collaborated closely with French car-makers in the post-WWII years and that Dacia as the main surviving car maker became a subsidiary of Renault. The Dacia Logan from twenty years ago was the first one since the Renault takeover that became a real breakout model, much like the Felicia and especially the Octavia did for Škoda back in the mid-to-late 1990s. Funnily enough, the Logan has also sold just fine in other markets where Renaults and other French cars are commonly sold and seen. Including North African ones. You laugh, but even in The Bourne Ultimatum, which premiered in 2007, one scene where Jason Bourne evades the police in Tangiers, Morocco, has the local police driving a Dacia Logan patrol cruiser. I've always found that detail cute. :-) Back then, people were appreciative of Dacia finally breaking out internationally, but I doubt anyone would have predicted how well it would do by the early 2020s. Volkswagen has Škoda as its older Czech sis who often even outperforms some Volkswagen sales, and Renault has Dacia as its younger sister that's also selling very well in a lot of niches that Renault might not always cover.

Were made here or put together here via CKD - Complete Knock Down. Last forever. Feels like driving a large car. Came in awesome pastel colours like our famous Kingwood's and Falcons and Valiants. Until lead was banned. The same car was sold in Turkey under a Turkish car maker. Lada sold the Samara and little 4wd Niva here in Australia. The Niva being very durable. Hi Ian and greetings from Europe! A fairly intriguing and interesting topic about the car and truck brands from Europe that americans aren't familiar with... and vice versa. Though us Europeans are mostly familiar with your brands since they are somehow present on our market as well. We are exempt from most of the model line, and so was in the past due to american cars being too big for our roads, parking lots and garages, also large fuel consumption and import costs. Yeah there are some american brands like Rivian, Fisker, Buick... from the defunct ones Oldsmobile, Pontiac (there were two or three models from Pontiac in European market as well...) beautiful cars. You can see them only on car collector events. As for European ones there is quite some major ones in car segment. You've mentioned Opel, Renault, Škoda, Dacia, Lada. There are also: - Lancia - Citroén - Peugeot - Seat - Cupra From old defunct ones Rover, Saab (not so interesting since they were available in US as well) and also some eastern european ones like Wartburg or FSO. Russians also have Zil, Volga or newer Aurus. There are a lot more of them defunct or present. But these I guess are/were the major ones. On bus and truck market there is much more of unknown stuff. There are a lot of Turkish brands present nowadays, like: - Otokar - Temsa and -Anadolu Isuzu - Mercedes Benz (Truck and bus) - Volvo (Truck and bus) - Solaris (Bus) - Neoplan (Bus/German) - Setra (Bus/German) - Scania (Bus and truck) - Iveco (Truck and bus - very popular) - Daf (Truck) - VDL (Bus) - Van Hool (Bus) - Heuliez Bus (Bus) - MAN (Truck and Bus) There are also Ford and Renault trucks present in Europe. In the past there was a lot of Magirus Deutz which is now incorporated into other brands. Hope you find some of these data interesting and useful for maybe another video. Kind regards and good luck with new videos.

here is something to think about, The factory that makes dacia shock absorbers is in czech republic. same factory makes them for ford, jaguar, skoda, peugeot, renault, mercedes and more. In Romania they make some parts that go on the shock absorbers for alll of them too. Basically all manufacturers use same things, the difference in price is gotten all by marketing

Basic crash course on Dacia: The first model produced was a Renault 8 copy (Dacia 1100) produced for 3 years only(66-69) until the tooling would be ready for the Renault 12 copy (Dacia 1300), which they produced as is for a few years, while working on their own modifications, until the initial collaboration with Renault ended at the end of the 70s. When they were on their own, those modifications were implemented, the name was amended and thus the 1310 was born. That model was produced until 2006, in a variety of configurations, engines and trim. Most common engines were the 1.3 petrol engines, later upgraded to 1.4 and 1.6 liters, and a 1.9 diesel that mostly was fitted to the 4x4 cabcon/yute variant which was used extensively for anything maintenance(gas, electric, roadworks, you name it. that car built the Romania of 1990-2010). Some time in the 2000s the engineers developed the first ever in house car, the Dacia Nova, which was a commercial flop, cause it had a lot of problems. It was refined into the Supernova and later into Solenza (2 different cars) which were awesome cars in every way. The taxi cars of choice of early 2000s. Then the french came back and the Logan showed up. It was the cheapest modern car at the time, made in Europe, at around 4500 euros. It is still produced to this day, in its 3rd generation. It also spawned various configurations: a Logan Van, a Logan MCV, a Logan Pickup. Then little by little, other models showed up: like the Sandero(small hatchback), Duster(the cheapest european made SUV at the time), the Dokker (which is either a people carrier like Renault Espace, or as a pannel van for tradesmen) and the Lodgy(7 seater MPV). And lastly a compact full electric city car was introduced in 2020, under the name Dacia Spring. It is not very good. It is also not made by Dacia, but by someone in China, from the Renault group. They were cheap, and people bought them and they sound like a space ship when they go by. Extremely noisy for an electric. There, Hope you enjoy. What I enjoy is the fact that the restrictions that Renault set upon Dacia way back in the day, that they will not compete with the bigger brands from the group, are finally lifted and we can finally see higher trims and specs from our models. Also, as a bonus: fun fact, the Dacia Duster name was used first for the ARO 10 (or Dacia 10) UK models sold between 1980-2006. ARO was another car manufacturer from way back then, that made extremely capable and durable offroad cars. Think Land Rover level of capability. Its a damn shame they went under.

By the way, I completely forgot about this: The Jogger and the Duster has an optional pack called the sleep pack, which is essentially a bespoke wooden framed box that you install in your car, transforming the interior into a 1.9 x 1.3m bed that sleeps 2 people comfortably-ish on brief outdoor stints, while also providing with well over 200liters of cargo storage underneath the sleeping area. Also, another option, an outdoor tent that you can affix the the back of the car :)

Kuddos man. It's allways funny to see how little the Americans know about "the rest of the world!". But it soothing when they are open to learn. If you go to Europe sometimes, you will be amazed to see so many things you don't get in the US. Dacia is sold rebadged as a Renault in the rest of the world. They are manufactured in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Morocco, maybe India. They used to have a plant in Russia, before the war. Latin America has lots of them: Logan, Sandero, Duster, Oroch (the mini pickup based on Duster). The biggest pleasent surprise in Europe right now is Dacia Jogger, the MPV, with hybrid or GLP. The models and interior amenities have become really good in the last 10 year or so. Normal Germans would buy a Dacia over a German car as an utilitarian car, to take them the cheapest way from point A to B. Now, the driving feeling is nowhere near the fancy brands, but people don't really care about all that, with the bad economy. Anyone would take a Dacia Duster through potholes, before any other European car. You should check out YT videos with Dacia Duster off road, and even in comparison with other brands. Those are fun.

One of the most reliable cars you can find. SUVs pissing me off going 10 MPH on dirt roads, and I don't even drive a Duster, just a Dokker, basically a minivan. And the stability of what is an empty, unloaded minivan is off the charts. You have to really struggle to get it to skid in turns.

In Germany the Sandero and Duster are pretty common but Dacia was very looked down upon in the Car szene bc they are the "cheap brand" of Renault, which some people by itself view cheap and not reliable(it literally said Dacia by Renault on the back). They were also probably the cheapest cars you can buy here new, so that didnt help the image. The old ones really were "bland" cars but the newer models are slowly changing peoples opinions about the brand. Probably also bc new German models are getting so expensive but German brand loyalty is still strong here so any foreign car always gets shit on here. You should look up some Duster offroading videos, they are very capable offroad Machines as 4x4s. Greetings from Germany

This first part is the All New Duster, its not out yet Its being launched in the UK in the next few months, looks pretty good, I'm very much thinking of getting one, the saving is significant over other brands. Dacia don't fill the cars with gadgets and BS, just what you want and I like that, I also like that its proven Renault tech, so you're not finishing the development for them. They're resisting the urge to go "upmarket" like the Koreans have. The Duster is a guilty pleasure for many

I love the new jogger, it's a good daily driver car that you can easily turn into a small van removing rear seats, it's also one of the few new cars that still uses mostly buttons for basic operational stuff. Once my citroen xsara picasso finally dies, it will be my new car. and you literally can't even buy a similar sized car from different brands even close to the price, even second-hand they'd have to be quite old.

Dacia has never really done 'official' motorsport programs on a large scale. The main ones have been the Dacia Logan Cup one-make race series, a campaign in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship with a Logan silhouette body on a spec Solution F chassis, and ice racing in the Andros Trophy. However, from 2025 it will be competing on the Dakar Rally with the Sandrider, a bespoke vehicle developed and run by Prodrive with a Nissan Z engine and Sebastien Loeb at the wheel.

The Dacia Duster has the design the Pontiac Aztek tried to achieve but failed miserably - the generic small crossover. Dacia was from the very beginning a Renault related company, building licensed variants of certain Renault models. It started out with the rear engine Renault 8 (There is a nice video series on KZbin, where an American replaces the old 1000 cc engine on an Renault 8 with a 850 cc lawnmower engine) and then the more modern Renault 12, which was build with some slight modifications for 30 years. My sister in law has now her second Dacia. It just the most car you can buy per euro. The first series Sandero she had was just that: cheap, but reliable. Seats were o.k. but no better, everything was thin sheet metal or cheap plastic (even the thud from the closing doors sounded cheap), but it got her from A to B. After 60,000 miles, the car was basically done, and she returned it to the dealership for the quite roomy Dacia Dokker she's driving now.

you get great fuel economy on the Dacia, the Duster is awesome... the two things I dislike owning one in Iceland are: 1. You get ALOT of discrimination and rudeness in traffic because of all the rental cars that tourists use.... 2. The fuel gauge estimates are always way way off in the onboard computer. ...also, the manual is 6 gears and the first three gears function like 4W-Lo and that makes the acceleration from traffic lights kinda slow unless you manage to shift perfectly other than that it is perhaps the greatest car I've ever owned

I had Dacia Duster (on other regions known as an Renault Duster), 1.3l 4 cylinder petrol with 4wd. It was purest form of move 1 to 4 persons from place to A to B without any hassle. Only bad thing is that it has aerodynamics of the brick and it did consume +8 liters per 100km. Reason to switch to other car were that petrol prices were going up close to 2e/l. It worked, it moved, it didn't stop when there were +20cm snow on the road. Just a perfect for what it were meant for. It is a bit parts bin car, many parts can be traced back to different Renaut and Nissan models. For example rear diff on Duster were from Nissan model. And when I was buying that new Dacia (1.3l 4x4) with "winter package" (summer & winter tyres) and almost top of the line equiped (touchscreen navigation, bluetooth, etc) it were below 25k euros... Try to do that with almost any other euro-brand...
