That extra large eco guy doesn't understand that the EU is already transitioning to renewable sources of energy and gas is used in power-plants that are used to balance the increased demand during peak hours or when renewables work with decreased efficiency. The rest of the electricity is made from nuclear fission and/or coal. Gas is by far the best medium for this, because all you have to do is light it up and it makes electricity almost instantly - unlike nuclear or even worse coal which has to burn for hours before the expected peak. Yet more coal is the only option without gas. If you stop gas exports, Europe will have to burn more coal. MUCH more coal ... for decades until it builds enough nuclear power plants to replace both coal and renewables because solar + wind and nuclear do not really work well together without either gas or coal to balance them out.

I knew this was coming. The low cost of natural gas was killing nuclear power. In my little way I have been that little chicken saying in my facebook, video chats, to friends that we need nuclear because LNG was going to make gas really expensive. Natural gas has been substituting when renewables can't generate. I think that only nuclear, perticually newer designs, is the way to go.

It was Germans mistake though to not diversify enough (reliant by 40%+ by a single supplier for such a crucial commodity is very risky) and their misguided green-energy policy.

What wasn't mentioned is that right now, about three dozen LNG tankers are sitting off the coast of Spain and nearby countries, waiting for space at the terminals to unload their gas. The Europeans want the gas, but don't have the capacity to import any more LNG.

It stands to reason, therefore, that Europeans will be building out storage capacity for gas and electricity and other fuel options. There could be investment opportunities here since this is a must-have.

@@Dave_Sisson Your reasoning is flawed. Europe will never go back to Russia for gas to previous levels, it's only going to diminish. Europe doesn't want to be vulnerable in an energy war. Also Russia has demonstrated to not be a trustworthy partner (at all). All are prime motivators for Europe's switch. Whether the war will be over or not will not make much of a difference. Simply said, for Europe it's a matter of safety. Europe wouldn't want to fund a country that poses the greatest threat to its Eastern borders. One thing that will come out of this, once Europe has become sufficiently energy independent from Russia they will adapt a much aggressive foreign policy towards Russia as they would able to do this since Russia will no longer hold much sway because of their energy exports.

But I do think they will buy limited amounts of gas after the war ends, especially if the government is overthrown as Russia will be in great economic difficulty. Gas from a pipeline will always be cheaper than LNG, but they will ensure more diversified sources such as more from Algeria, Norway, etc as well as some from Russia.

alternatively: quick way to make the EU's industry sustainable. It wouldn't make sense to do it beforehand when gas prices were cheap. It is going to be really expensive to develop the technologies to decarbonise industries like steel production. Russia has a lot to gain. Force majeure to avoid paying compensation for breach of contract when they stopped supplies. Access to technologies for investigating and in their mind repairing the pipeline. An argument for sanctions for pipeline equipment pumps etc to be suspended. And on and on. The entire matter is no longer relevant as Gas is no longer going to be purchased from Russia, by Europe, forever. Yes Bulgaria will probably have to go under secondary sanctions in time.

The prices in Europe are a consequence of Europe choosing an unreliable supplier for their energy. Europe should’ve learned after Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, or Crimea in 2014, or maybe when they were assassinating people with highly radioactive materials, almost causing a nuclear disaster in the UK. Europe does not enough energy terminals to get all the energy they need, so naturally, with supply low and demand high, prices are going to be high.

A lot of work needs to go into electric vehicles before they’re viable. I recently read that replacement batteries for electric and hybrid cars runs $15k to $20k with labour. That’s a massive hidden cost.

To show how warped the international natural gas market is, the price of gas in the U.S. has about doubled over the last year due to LNG exports, but the U.S. market price drops significantly each time there is a problem with an LNG export terminal, because each accident means more gas is left for U.S. consumers.

Problem is that US admin now doing everything it can to limit exports (newly structured permits and inspectional demands far exceeding any existing regulations, is just one example). Creates a glut in the US and deprives European friends the more balanced supply that was promised. because they're playing the long game, Canada supplies 62% of all US crude oil imports. Currently the US is courting Venezuela(begrudgingly with it's appalling human rights record) , again for relieving the increase in domestic oil demand because we thought we where so righteous in weaning off Saudi oil because of their appalling human rights record their 15+ years ago. Canada already has terminals for LNG exports but they are mostly stationed and 'pointed' towards the west coast, with it's current market there.

Watching the FT reporter NOT push back against the ignorance of James, the man at the end of the video, confirms the role they play in continuing misinformation and not holding wrong, good-hearted, opinions accountable. LNG is 100% a part of the future and wind/solar cannot hold a candle to it. One molecule of methane has the same greenhouse effect of 20 CO2 molecules. Natural Gas produces less carbon when it's burned to produce energy however any methane that escapes or isn't burned is equivalent to 20 times the same number of CO2 with respect to greenhouse effect. NOTE: I have no idea about how much methane escapes the system and the ammount could be insignificant. One point I would like to have seen is the carbon emissions due to the freezing process - from a quick search I found out 8% of the gas that enters the plant is spent to make it liquid. Another important point is the political aspect of exporting fossil fuels - a point well made by the Green Army General: if a country is really dedicated to combatting climate change it should also reduce it's fossil fuel exports. A few weeks before Biden's speech about the Inflation Reduction Plan that subsidizes a lot of domestic companies in the renewables and EV, the US started the construction of a huge oil export facility at the Gulf of Mexico. The US is not reducing its carbon emissions - it's putting the emissions under other countries names.

Too bad Europe didn't diversify their sources of energy. Wind and solar are best used as a supplement. Nuclear (fission) would be better and France went this route. Fusion power is a pipe dream that's always 20+ years in the future. I got my degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1974 and there were many soon to be graduates looking forward to working on fusion power. The professor in our senior class put the kibosh on that; stating that if practical fusion power was demonstrated that day, fusion power plants would be starting operation no sooner than 2000, 26 years later. My bet on base power supplies would be natural gas and nuclear (fission) power for the next several decades until something better comes along. The US has enough natural gas reserves to last to the end of this century. I'm not so optimistic about nuclear power because of the NIMBYs.

Very VERY bad move and now they are paying the price - literally. They should have stayed with nuclear power. Wind and solar can NEVER give a place 24/7 baseload power. As you say, they are best used as a supplement. Only nuclear, fossil-fuel and hydro-power can give you baseload power (geothermal too but not everywhere has that). One of the things I'm interested in is gas-extraction from *sewage* - there is an endless supply of it and it is usually quite easy to add a gas plant to an existing wastewater treatment plant. This is an energy source that has barely been looked at but it could be hugely useful. Europe has more diversified energy sources than the US and is generally less energy dependent. Europe operates more nuclear power stations than the US and also more renewables. The difference is that the US uses much more oil and coal.

It's the market. And it is a good thing in the long run. It forces us to change our habits, improving our efficiency, looking to renewables etc. We keep on making this mistake of thinking hydrocarbons as reliable or cheap. They can only be reliable or cheap in the short term. In the long term there will always be shocks. We have the technology today to overcome the intermittency problem. Arguably it was viable before, but now surely it can't be argued?

As an european, i too want a transition away from fossile fuels including LNG. Blown up inside, it was Russia. Blown up outside, we won't know unless there is some forensic evidence like some bomb components that could be traced back to the country of origin. But even that is not proof. I think this was NOT USA because USA/NATO has been very delicate with Russia. There might even be a 3rd party out there that wants to disrupt energy infrastructure in order to benefit. Iran, Qatar, China, and Canada also have a large stake in natural gas and may benefit. Some of these might also want NATO and Russia to distrust each other further.

Fossil gas should be a stopgap and not a long-term solution. Multi-decade investments in fossil fuels are a bad idea both for future inhabitants of planet Earth as well as those who hold stranded fossil fuel infrastructure investments. @@morpher44 once the LNG gets to its desired location and turned back into regular natural gas, methane, it also leaks going into millions of pipes going to cities and towns everywhere. that unburnt leakage, is so so sooooo much worse than the burnt byproduct of natural gas. unless we can get a good handle on shoring up all the lost gas via leakage. the atmosphere is going to have much worse greenhouse gases than Co2.

@@jmchng9662 because there r limited supplier of these stuff, imagine u cap price on two of the biggest producer at once. good luck finding these stuff at the price u capped, we can just leave these stuff underground too and drill slower or store it up in cave until we need them. at the end of the day, these will be sold via long contract. most of spot already sold or reserve for chinese/japanese/korean. if they dont buy we simply just use it our self, that will help drive down the price with in the country. good thing being a big producer of this stuff, also big consumer ur self.
