Lionel Messi needed his Argentine teammates to bail him out, and the world champions delivered for their all-time captain.
Messi missed his penalty kick in a shootout, but Argentina outlasted Ecuador 1-1 (4-2 in penalty kicks) in their Copa America quarterfinal match Thursday night in front of 69,456 people at NRG Stadium in Houston to advance to the semifinal.
Messi walked up with the ball in his hand and lined up Argentina’s first kick to set the tone. And he missed it. His chip shot down the middle was ideal, but the ball tipped the crossbar and went over the net. Messi said he attempted the kick in that fashion, after consulting with Argentina’s two goalies.
"A lot of anger, a lot of anger," Messi said of his penalty miss. "I just wanted to touch it and it went high."

First time in history of Messi, more then one player stept up in clutch moments, and saves Messi( Emiliano Martinez and all 4penaltie takers for Argentina) Argentina as a team play bad today, this is why Messi get the ball just 31 times...and Messi played maybe 50% fit, so ofcorse he didnt run as much, so he would not more injure himself before the Semi final and Final... About Penaltie kick miss, if he shoot 10cm. Lower this would be amazing panenka goal, and he would umberess Ecuador goalkeeper and showed Cristiano Ronaldo and his fans once again who is Lionel Messi... Now Messi will finish once again,and get Argentina second Copa America in a row😉... I'm 100 procent conffident🙂

Its normal thing in football but what I noticed on messi in this game that he was not excited in the whole game or he was not in good mood. It was like he might be dissappointed by low payment from Argentina government. I might be wrong. But if he is not so interested in playing then better take rest rather than participating. He should always thanks to that legendry Goalkeeper who saved not in yesterday`s game but also in world cup.
