I have just finished moving to Croatia from America! This is a new type of video I hope to do more of as I travel more of Europe and other places, but I wanted to give people an idea of what our apartment is like (and some of my favorite features), as well as show off some of the beauty of Old Town Split, which is built using Diocletian's Palace as a base. I have to travel a bit to get there, but its so pretty!

As a Croat I'm happy you like it there! I think it's always wonderful to live close to the sea. Life is more peaceful, you feel more connected to nature.

After living here for almost a year now I can say I like it more than the states in many ways. No country is perfect and Croatia has its faults but we enjoy it. I agree being close to the sea brings so much peace.

Seems that most expats etc. are focused around old city core of Diocletian's palace when it comes to habitation. Literally the most expensive rent prices. Smaller cities just outside of Split or even some of the newer regions of the city are much more affordable. I don't understand.

Not as much need for transportation of any kind to get to major things like the ferry etc is super helpful. Navigating without a car is hard to do! That was our main reason for looking at main cities when choosing where to live. Also more expat community and workspaces!

Also while it’s expensive for someone who gets paid in kuna, it’s actually cheaper than an apartment where we used to live in the US, so it’s affordable for us! This may be the case for many expats as many get paid in foreign currency, not kuna.

@@callunaspitfire I understand all those reasons, personally i dislike living in Split. Solin or Kaštela would be much better imho. Public transport is affordable and commonly used, there is also uber, but i get it especially for foreigners near old town looks exotic, for us natives it's not what it used to be anymore. Human greed and lack of proper planning made the old town void of native population. Most sold their apartments, moved out and are only renting for tourists. You could say tourism ruined the soul of the city.

@@HladniSjeverniVjetar I can understand that. Honestly it comes down to a government problem because there should be caps on housing costs and other such things to accommodate local people better. However, most of our friends here are Dalmatian and live locally. They do have issues with rental costs if they don’t own their own place though, so it’s understandable. Again probably needs to be fixed at a government level

Nalazim se u Hrvatskoj, u gradu Pagu, koji je jako lijep grad, ali u njemu nemam prijatelja, a želim upoznati prijatelja iz ovog grada, je li to moguće?

how much rent this aapartment?

It varies depending on how close to Old Town (or other landmark) or the water you are, the view you have, etc. but for us, it is significantly cheaper than what we would have paid for a 3-bedroom in any major city in Connecticut, USA where my husband and I are from, so we are happy. There are a lot of housing scammers in Croatia (as in any place with a lot of tourism), so costs vary for foreigners especially as they are the most likely to be scammed, and it can also depend on if you are trying to find an apartment all year round, or just the off-peak season. It can range 400-1800 Euros per month with all of these factors. I hope that answers the intent of your question, as I don't feel comfortable sharing our actual personal costs online. :-D

@@callunaspitfire Did you hire an attorney to proof read your rental agreement, and protect you against stupidity? That's a beautiful apartment, and very large. Love the kitchen. How are you dealing with medical insurance? Are you covered by the Croatian Health Insurance, the HZZO, or do you have private insurance? Any of you have Croatian blood?
@callunaspitfire
@callunaspitfire 2 жыл бұрын
@@apscoradiales no to the attorney because we had a local Croatian friend help us with obtaining an apartment but isn’t a bad idea for many people considering renting a place especially places commonly rented to tourists in the summer. Neither of us is Croatian or has Croatian family, but we love the culture here so far! And yes it’s one of the larger apartments you can get here before renting a house! As for medical insurance under a digital nomad visa you must have private insurance in order to apply for the visa. You cannot use the public health care system without it unless you get more permanent types of visas.

@@callunaspitfire Yeah, their government medical insurance can be very expensive, and is based on your income. Wife and I are considering going back there to live (we stayed there for over eight months a couple of years ago), but find their insurance very expensive. It would cost us over 600 dollars a month for the two of us. Both of us love their cafe culture - nobody seems to be working there, and they all take 2 hour long or more coffee breaks. I think Zagreb has more sidewalk cafes than does Rome or Vienna! And the scenery is magnificent! On the coast as well as inland. Take the opportunity to travel the country now. The coastal highway from the far south to the far north blows the Pacific Coast Highway in California out of the water, imo. Rovinj, up north, is my favourite place there. The countryside in the inland is also magnificent. Plitvice Lakes is worthy of a trip. It's like Yellowstone park times a 100. Zagreb is full of Austrian-Hungarian feel, and culture. Worth spending a few days there. Istria has its share of mountain top towns...it feels very much like Tuscany, and lots of people speak Italian there. Be careful of wanting to pay your restaurant bills on the Visa card. They will tell you that their Visa machine doesn't work after you had the meal. It's BS because they don't want to pay Visa the commission. Ask if the machine works before you sit down. Seen that ploy in Rome as well many times. I had to call the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Financial Police) one time on a restaurant to straighten them out! And always keep your receipts. If you don't get a receipt, it means the restaurant will not declare the payment you made as their income, so then they won't have to pay tax to the government. Scammers!

Is there any American who knows this is a sea? Not ocean, not water.

It's a slang. Most North Americans don't call the sea, the sea, They call it the ocean, but we all know what it means. One of those things. It's like the Europeans, particularly the Brits and Croatians calling North America "America" without realising that there is Canada there as well. And Canada is not "Amerika".
