1:24 There are at least three different whole ways you can interpret this section of the song and that is so dang cool to me. The three ways I noticed are: 1. Premarital sex (flowering as in “deflowering”, plus tender blades as in naked shoulder blades, and the balsam fir referring to the wood bed frame) 2 Regular (if not cheesy) courtship behavior (giving her actual flowers and carving their names into a tree like Henry x Ella” or “H x E”) 3. A (metaphorical) Wake/funeral (putting flowers on her dead body and the balsam fir as in him making a coffin (or a reference to the lids of medieval sarcophagi with lids carved like the person in life) (because in a way she is already dead/doomed, as she had been “shot with a wink”) The veil can refer to either the obvious marriage veil or the linens a body may be wrapped in before burial (and maybe even bedsheets, following the premarital sex line of thought) Edit: It’s so interesting how violent imagery is used throughout, including the first half.

Personally I feel like ultimately ‘Unwed Henry’ is a sadistic murderer, but when he thinks about his victims, the line between sexual deviance and homicidal cruelty blend together. I think the part you mentioned at 1:24 is the best showcase of that; whether or not it was sex or murder, he always remembers it as if both are one in the same

I love the lyrical dissonance between the senseless murder being discussed and the soothing tones of the singers. This is going to set my replay button on fire.

Henry goes looking for a wife and find Winter. After convincing her to come back with him, he has his very violent way with her and ends up killing and burying her by the creek. After the cold came and went he goes looking again and finds Spring. He abuses her in a drunken state. She tries to escape but injures herself in his fence. He finds her and mad with rage throws her into his kitchen and leaves her there. She wakes with him drowning her in his sink and apologizing. He hangs her by the creek above his last wife, and waits another season

That's a very interesting interpretation of the lyrics, I like it

This is one of the most creepy, visceral songs! Damn, I can practically feel and taste and smell everything the victim goes through.

Had all the lyrics for this one, except the first, second and last verses. Each song has a refrain you can catch onto before you learn the lyrics I've noticed. This adds to the ease with which people remember the lyrics for them I notice. Waiting for Six Merry Men and Pretty Lavinia here. As I predicted from the preview portrait, Unwed Henry is a "black widower" killer.

The fact that Voltaire is playing him makes it all the more perfect, due to his discography being filled with murder ballads.

So, Henry met a girl and everything was okay (The spring) but he becomes absuive when he drinks (Winter and bruises) and the girl tired to excape but he caught her and beat her and drowned her in the sink and then there the ring into the creak and either put her body there as well or hung her from the tree (Yo make it look like suicide?)

The best description is by Ronny Lamorte in the comments. He explains exactly how Henry's story played out from the moment he married the girl all the way to the moment she jumped from the window.

At my wake outpost Terrence & Saar sang this heartbreakingly slowly, it was haunting and amazing. Wish I had a recording of that version but this and my great memories will have to do.

Anyone elses interpretation that at the point he says “six he shot her with a wink” that this guy went after a wife like a hunt and literally shot her? Either on accident and she was a human or these are the animals he hunts. But either way after that i cant help but imagine its just a lifeless corpse his holding throughout the rest of the song.
