It is an an embarrassment every time a rugby fan makes comments like that; even in jest. It is not in keeping with the ethos of the game that I played and have followed since around 1966. I am quite sure they don't pay millions of dollars to anything less than the best, biggest, fittest, fastest and toughest young guys in the USA who want to play AF. The problem for the spread of rugby in the States is that they are exactly the sort of guys that we would like to see taking up rugby.

Actually when I was a scout (and I was also au rugby player) we played "sioule", a kinda medieval ancestor to rugby. There was one rule : no weapon. And that's it. You could kick you opponent in the nuts if you wanted. With or without the ball. No offside, nothing but a free for all to put the ball on some point.

Do not tense up while hitting or being hit. It's bad for your health. Many of the hits in that video were illegal and some of the legal ones are now illegal. As an American that played gridiron for about a decade and then went on to play rugby for a few more decades I can tell you that all that equipment worn to 'protect' the players of the 'American game' just ends up being used as weapons.

I was the opposite, started in rugby and played gridiron later. In my experience the hardest hits are about the same level - the difference is that you get them more often in gridiron. Also you get bruised and cut up worse in gridiron (now that rucking has been removed from rugby) due to copping a helmet or shoulder pad to a forearm or other unprotected part of the body. I think comparing them is silly really, they are different sports.

I've played since I was 7, been in the hospital only once over a 20 odd year period, a few minor concussions though. People have on rare cases died yes, but that's why our conditioning, form, discipline and respect for the game goes beyond the dangers. I've been concussed, knocked out, lost 7 teeth, had black eyes, bloody noses, cauliflower ears, sprains, twists and more bruises than I care to remember. I'm now 57 and I'd still love to be playing. I like the NFL but your players wouldn't last one training session with a pro rugby team all of whom play for wages a fraction of those paid by the NFL. Rugby is an amazing sport.

A lot of those rugby tackles would be considered a penalty and even a yellow/red card (10mins/permanently off the field respectively) , mostly tackling without the ball 6:20 using no arms like called a shoulder charge 7:25 high tackles which are tackles above the waist/spear tackles when you lift the player above the waist 6:35 / 7:09. Pretty much all the hits after 7:30 are all illegal tackles. Ironically all the rules regarding physical contact are only put in place for the players safety 😂

Teams are split into Forwards - Numbers 1 to 8, and backs, numbers 9 to 15. Most of the big hitters are usually forwards, people like Courtney Lawes, from England, 6'7" and 260lbs, or Sebastien Chabal of France, 6'3" and 250lbs, but there are some monster tacklers in the backs too. Johnny Wilkinson of England was probably one of the hardest hitters, pound for pound, and he would bring down players much larger. Injuries are no more common than they are in NFL, but you do get a few split eyebrows, black-eyes, and broken noses (mine was broken 3 times), but that sort of thing adds character to a face!

Rugby was invented in 1823 at Rugby School in England, U.K. common injuries in Rugby are loss of teeth, broken ribs, leg fractures, other bones, head injuries (far more than Boxing), the caps which you might see on some players are 'Scrum Caps' worn for 'Scrums' which is part of the game play, similar to a 'Scrimmage' in American Football, otherwise no protection is generally used except perhaps some supports from earlier injuries. There are two forms of the game, 'League' which has 13 players and 'Union' with 15 players. I hope that this helps a bit with the understanding of the game.

This is how rugby is played, and rugby league….no pads, no helmets, and no fear. Concussion and broken bones is common…like NFL injuries can cause issues years later. I’m 6’5”, and when i was playing rugby, I was 152kgs. Loved the contact, best part of the game 😂😂 Tried playing basketball (loved it), played Volleyball 👍🏽, played a season of NFL in New Zealand…they were all great games, but just not enough contact for me…the helmets in American football obscured my peripheral’s and made lining up a hit harder..😂😂😂😂Welcome to the rugby rabbit hole…don’t be surprised if you get hooked. The continuous play, and 2 x 40 minute halves, no stop start play, is great, and the team you field, is both your offence and your defence, and there are no superstar positions in rugby, like the quarterback, and receivers, cause anyone can score a ‘ Try ‘ (touchdown).

Rugby is the OG sport invented in England in the town of Rugby. Then in America you copied our sport of Rugby and feminised it with padding and that stuff, and called it American Football. You also added rules like stopping play after every tackle. In Rugby there is no downs or time. It is 80 mins long, split into two halves. At 40 mins you'll get a 10 mins half time break but that is all, otherwise the game is continuous more or less. You're entitled to a gum shield and a scrum cap (piece of cloth) to go over your head (optional) to protect your ears mainly. Other than that you gotta just watch yourself and take the hit like a man. Rugby is a game of discipline, speed, adrenaline, tactics and sheer brute force. But to summarise that for you, hit hard and don't get hit, and make the yards you gain count for something. In England/UK we learn from a very young age, I started at 6.

There is no evidence to suggest Rugby was invented in Rugby. There are many forms of the similar type games around the world. The Maori's Ki-o-rahi, the Italians Calcio Fiorentino, the Irish Caid or the Scot's Ba. Who knows where William Ellis got the idea to play a game with ball in hand in Rugby 1823, it only started to become popular in the area in the following years.

Some of those hits were illegal and would be penalised or player sent off for 10 minutes. But I can only say that both these codes you saw are as close to being gladiators without killing each other. There were actually two codes of footy in these clips. 1) Rugby Union 2) Rugby League All though similar they are entirely different. You have to watch both to understand. Watch New Zealand Warriors highlights. And then watch New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Team. I played both codes in my time and loved every moment. No injuries apart from the odd dislocated finger or a few sprig marks from being rucked by a boot or two. But I enjoyed the full contact, the comraderie and the competing against your rivals.

The only protection rugby players may wear is a mouth guard. It doesn't prevent you from losing your teeth, it just makes it easier to find them. This said most of the vicious tackles from the older footage are now illegal, as you can see the ref pulling the red card (which means the exclusion of the guilty player for the rest of the match, his team then playing with one less man) in newer matches. Also in rugby the rules are called laws and you're not allowed to discuss the referee's decision unless you want to be penalised too.

I read a statistic ages ago, (obviously for people who have played NFL for a number of years) that something like 66% of ex-NFL players, when they retire, have permanent injuries. Even with all their padding. Guessing there would gave to be a statistic for ex-league/Union players... p.s.. Rugby league and rugby union are similar, but still different games.

The lift tackles that go past 90 degrees are actually illegal and hitting with no arms in a tackle like shoulder charging. And yes hits like this happen at all ages. We start young. But the objective is to hit hard but not to actually hurt the other players.

We have strict rules on playing rugby at school these days in the UK (as do other countries). Tackling is not allowed until Under 9s and it must be around waist height and no 'fending' (hand offs, etc.). Contested scrums (with 6 scrummagers) are not allowed until Under 13s and full scrums at under 14s, fully-contested lineouts with lifting are permitted at under 16s.

Rugby is a tough sport but when you play from the age of 8-9 you become conditioned to the physicality of it. You asked if anyone has never got up after a hit. Well that happened to me during a match at school when I was 18 and playing for the school first team against a rival school. I was playing fullback (last line of defence) and their biggest guy was charging towards me. His knee hit my chin and knocked me out cold. I remember a weird kind of floating feeling as I was being stretchered off the field and coming to, and my team mates rallied around me to say that somehow I'd managed to tackle him so he didn't score. Had to spend the night in hospital for further observation for concussion, but I was fine a couple of days afterwards. I did win my school rugby colours after that match which is an award given to those who excel at a sport, and which allowed me to wear a tie of a different design than the rest of the kids at school.

I can't speak for current statistics, but a few years ago the fatality rate in UK was 4-5 per season, but most of those were cardiac. Also, a lot of the hits in this video are illegal. The game tends to be less open these days as well, but there are still some HUGE hits and the guys are even bigger.

Play doesn't stop after a tackle. Continuous play with the same players on the field for 40 minutes, a quick break, then all over again for another 40. So these guys get hit, but have to shrug it off and get straight back in the game

as a scrawny lad that played rugby up until about 14, its all about completely committing to the tackle. im about as skinny as it comes and id consistently be bringing down guys twice my size just by committing fully to the tackle and latching on to squeeze in around their ankles. only time you get hurt is when somebody accidentally steps on ur head.

NFL generally consists of about 30s of action followed by a long pause. Rugby can go on for several minutes of continuous play, after which there is a pause whilst limbs and heads which have come loose are reattached and then the game can restart. Incidentally, I played rugby for about 7 years and the only real injury I got was a minor spinal injury when a scrum collapsed (I was a flanker pressed into action as a prop) but I was advised to quit the game. I then took up field hockey and I got many, many more injuries playing that. I also played cricket and broke nearly every finger, but never missed a match. I even played half a season with a pot on my wrist.

Your Rugby team deserves respect, they play hard and hold down full time jobs, amateur players fronting up against the toughest teams in the world in one of the worlds toughest team sports. I forgot to mention, the hits are a snapshot. The game is beautiful, the guys and girls not getting hit are the most spectacular.

In most of the "hardest rugby hits" videos on KZbin a significant fraction of the hits shown are illegal to the point of the hitter being shown a yellow (sent off the pitch for 10 minutes without replacement. Team plays a man short) or red card (sent off for remainder of the game, team plays a man short). You can't tackle above the shoulders, nor can you take a player in the air. Also If you take a player by picking them up off their feet you become responsible for bringing them down safely. For example, if you turn them past vertical (i.e. head down) and bring them into the ground that way you get thrown out. The video creators lump them together with normal legal hits for the "gasp" factor but they're not what rugby's about.

Hi Chris,my name's IAN,yeah no pads, some rules have been changed, you can't pick a player up and slam them, some players seem to get brain trouble later in life, football is looking into how many times you can head the ball in a game because of brain problems,if your heading or getting slammed something will go wrong,
