The plant along the water way that you mentioned to your parents is called bình bát in Vietnamese. It’s the wild cherimoya. Its fruits have lots of seeds. The seedlings are used as roots stocks for grafting trees in the same family.

Starfruit to me tastes like peaches or apricots . Dustin should hire a local Vietnamese cook to prepare foods with ingredients that can be found in his backyard for least a week to help her getting a hold of what can be utilized in his own garden and feeling somewhat less homesick. Lots of things in his garden, from star fruits to mango leaves, green banana can find their ways to a Vietnamese exotic dishes such as springrolls or salad. Just be brave and adventurous and the sky is the limit.

9:45 Dustin, we have cassava everywhere here in the US. You may not see it going to Vons and stuff but it's sold at farmer's markets, rural markets, Asian markets, etc... It's called yucca here in rural US. I live in a semi-rural town East of San Diego and we have yucca here at our local market.
