I have a Raleigh International, purchased in 1976 for $525. Toured extensively in the Rockies with it. Raced as an amateur with it. Put paniers on it and did tours of Nova Scotia; Vermont; Maine. Still using original Brooks saddle and campy components. Still riding it at 66 years old. Best advice ever was when in 1976 a friend told me it was the best all around bike I could buy.

No Mike the RALIEGH International is a 1971 and Internationals always used wienmann center pulls even though many people changed them out to CAMPY side pulls

I still have my Motobecane 21 speed from back in the day ,,, I have a Carbon fiber road bike,,,,,and have ridden and owned many,,,, Never ridden a bike as fast as the Motobecane,,,,,and it's heavier. But the height of the frame stiffness of the be Vitus tubing and the bearings and Miche rims it's just awesome,,,,😎

I had a raleigh ten speed in the early 70's that I bought and had serviced at C.B. "Red" Klinedenst on south Duke Street in York PA. They also sold Columbia's.

That International is a wonderful bike. My friend had one in the mid 70’s, probably still has it. The older bikes can be ridden forever because their components aren’t unique. Today’s bikes become obsolete quickly.

Just purchased a raleigh from the thrift store because my friend had one back in highschool we turned into a fixed gear. Anyway i just got home with my $35.00 purchase and come to find out it's the same model as the one in this video. now knowing this now I'll keep it all original.

I bought my first 10 speed back when I was still in high school in 1972 and I remember my friends asking why I was spending that kind of money on a bike when I didn't even have a car but I always loved riding bikes and would just ride for hours.

i have ridden carbon fiber, alu, ti and Reynolds steel bikes. nothing beats steel bike are just awesome for road bikes. descending Mountain passes on a steel frame is slick, point and she goes.

I've got a Raleigh bike that was the last USA made Raleigh with a Technium frame. I heard through the grapevine that Raleigh hired X NASA Engineers to develop the technium frame.

I owned a mid 80’s Raleigh Technium with Sun Tour Components too. It was a nice road bike but not Raleigh’s top tier model which is the International. The Technium was an entry level racing bike with a frame construction of thermobonded aluminum tubes. NASA didn’t actually design the frame as it was pretty much a standard double diamond design with standard road bike geometry. Where NASA was involved is they assisted in developing the thermobonding process used to join the tubes together which consisted of using a thermoset resin and heat to bond the tubes together to make a really strong joint. The alternative method at the time was welding which required thicker rounder tubes and required more aluminum to create a strong weld. Which it did and as the Technium had smaller diameter tubes and was about 500g lighter than a comparable large diameter aluminum tube (think Cannondale or Klein). Large diameter tube Aluminum frames were also notorious for their harsh, ultra stiff ride quality. The objective at that time was to use the thermobonding process to join the tubes and produce a frame that was slightly lighter and did not have the harsh ride quality of large diameter aluminum tubes. Raleigh succeeded in that respect. The bike was marginally lighter and the ride quality was not nearly as harsh. However the design failed because it took the frame stiffness to far in the opposite direction. The overall frame lacked strength, was very flexible on the bottom bracket and did not provide a ride quality that inspired confidence during sprints, climbs and descent. In fact the frame design flaw on descents was quite frightening. During a steep descent as your speed exceeded 35 mph the bike frame would develop harmonic resonance and became worse as your speed increased. Needless to say that was incredibly unsettling as it felt like the frame was going to vibrate apart. It was that severe. So for general road riding it was a nice bike but for competitive riding it kinda sucked. I ended up selling after one season and replaced it at a similar price with a Schwinn Premise made with Columbus SL tubing and a brazed lug construction and Shimano 105 components. That was definitely a better bike than the Technium and I raced it for three years than upgraded to a Schwinn Paramount which has a superb ride quality and I still own and ride it. Though I did upgrade its components a few years back to Dura Ace 7800 series components.

@@Mottleydude1 Vibrate apart? I had a Tanaka 2 stroke with a gates kevlar belt drive on mine for over 5 years. It felt fine, it would hit 38 MPH. Years ago I took the motor off, and the frame is good still. I inspect it regularly. Bout to put drop bar on it with a 1 X 10 drivetrain. It is a MT400 Rsi

@@thesingletrackslacker8591 I don’t know what to tell you. When I first noticed it on a descent I immediately thought the frame was out of alignment. So I had it checked out and it wasn’t. I had Wobbler 32 spoke wheels on it which were pretty good wheels. Thought they might have been out of round or true but they weren’t and I would have noticed that before I hit any hills. I have no idea why it did but from 35-40 mph it was very noticeable and above 40 it was down right frightening.

@@thesingletrackslacker8591 That’s why I’m not a weight weinie. My understanding is that there are a bunch of factors involved with speed wobble (harmonic resonance) but that bikes that have tube walls that are to thin and to small a diameter to the weight of the rider are more prone to harmonic resonance occurring on a fast descent. Even then it’s pretty rare but when it does happen it is freaky. At first I could see and feel the handle bars, head tube and the top tube oscillating but as I gained speed it got much worse and I could literally see the head tube and top tube twisting rapidly to the left and right. So when I said I thought it was going to vibrate apart I wasn’t exaggerating. That Technium was my first good quality road bike and was considered very lightweight for that time at 19# but as bike frames go it was more flexible than I liked.

My international has a normal handlebar and the shifter+derailleur was sr sun tour xct and so are the brakes. The actual gears were shim amp though. The international really confuses me. I have no idea what my original wheels where though

Chrome lugs look a bit rough, paint looks a bit sun faded. Nothing rides like a 1971 Raleigh international, I know, I own one. Of all the bikes I've ever owned, the Raleigh international is the best, soaks up bumps, comfortable, turns like a dream. I'll never sell it, hope they bury me with it!🙂🙂🙂
