I have a love-hate relationship with reading American Psycho for the very reasons you mentioned. That said, after reading the book, I came away obsessed and wanting to read more of BEE's books and have started reading "Rules of Attraction." Also, since BEE and I are of about the same age and have lived both in CA and NYC during the time he has written his novels, his descriptions of those places during those periods of time are of particular interest to me and I get great enjoyment from reliving my coming of age moments. I also marveled at how young BEE was when he wrote his first three novels and that some parts of his writing are pure genius, outstandingly creative and downright funny.

I’ve read three of his books now, and I’ve only liked this one. I’m hesitant to read another one.

The murders seem medically impossible. Great book, read it when it came out and most of my mates and family read it. They all seemed to enjoy. I found it a really funny satire. Only shroedingers cat would know whether he committed the crimes or not. Great video.

The outfits sound fashionably impossible, too.

This was the kind of book where I couldn't fully appreciate it until I looked back on it!

I think that’s because the book is not enjoyable to read. I once heard someone say that they like this book, but they don’t enjoy reading it. I can relate to that.

American Psycho is a subversion of Dostoevsky's 'sinning your way to God' -in Bateman's world there is no God to condemn or redeem. Did Patrick commit all those crimes? It doesn't matter, no one cares enough to find out. The extreme violence in the novel is simply the logical progression of consumerism; the desire for novelty. Reading the novel makes you realise that the film makers really bottled it with their adaptation.

It’s about consumerism, yes. I think the film’s good, though.
