Great reaction and review. I know this has been mentioned many times but this shows the difference between hiphop and Grime culture. Obviously when Kool Herc came from Jamaica and started spinning he took the Jamaican Sound system culture and in the states it became Hiphop were the UK takes from the Root of Jamaican Sound systems and went into Jungle and then evolved with Garage and Drum and Bass into what became known as Grime. IMO Americans always seem to think Hiphop came first when it didn't. Its not until you start watching other cultures you learn the true origins of a lot of all the music we love came from that small island with alot of influence. Apologies for a essay on each reaction but I'm really liking your insights into music and culture. Peace

That is true, UK scenes evolved differently to US in the ways you outline. However, I think it is only fair to also acknowledge that obviously, as a country the UK is not in a vacuum and US Hiphop became as massive here as everywhere else. No doubt our MCs have been influenced by that too - indeed, Kano and Ghetts for example often talk of Biggie, Tupac, Jay Z, Nas etc as amongst their favourites, as well as being directly influenced by homegrown talent like D Double E etc. Lots of influences from all sorts of different places trickling down into what eventually made Grime culture.

Never worry the essays for me are what's all about. I used to think the same way but you have to account for American exceptionalism. If we didn't keep anything from the Empire we kept that bit and turned it to a 1000. Without the extra time, I would still think hiphop is first. I now say hiphop is the most powerful of all music creations to date. It subverts language region and time far more easily than anything I've ever heard or seen in history or in my time. Soundsytem to grime that is the history lesson road I am on with these. I've seen some ogs prior like Smiley Culture or 90s UK hiphop 13days in may but those came with little context or none at all. In America we are taught JA is a vacation destination we don't even cover slavery in the Caribbean. If I did have the background I have I still wouldn't know these things smh. we have a lot to fix here. Thanks for rocking with me its really appreciated.

That's big facts but the progression I think is what is so interesting. American went sound system to the park to parties to 80s rap to 90s rap and the 2000's to now trap . The Uk though went sound system/dancehall to uk hiphop(heavy US influence) to garage to jungle to dnb to grime. The Drill emerges outside of all that and 30 other sub genres that don't exist in America. that evolution to me and its differences sonically is what intrigue me the most. For my UK list I know the order isn't exact but I think you guys get me lol.

All these man came up together and crossed paths 15-20 years on London pirate radio scene so are used to going to spitting bars all for fun, when there was no money or mainstream attention. They all have respect for each so these type of sets are like a reunion for them lol. Mc's from North, East and south Ldn

Yea I get that and I personally would operate with this kind of energy. But emcees in my country the culture is not taught in a way to respect these bonds. Man wouldn't do this without the bag and it meeting x criteria. Very rare to see this level of comradery in my music scene especially hiphop/rap. Moving like this allows history to be made more often than I see it happening here.

in this set we touch on My intro to the garage and later grime scene, the Streets (Mike Skinner) massive at the Time (Early 00's), did a bunch of colabs with upcoming grimeartists and put the mainstreams eye on that scene. He took Kano and ghetts On tour with him before they got big. Kano shouts him out here (and in a lot of His songs) and uses some of His bars.

just to give a little context to the heavy carribean influnce in uk culture the uk didnt have slaves in the same way america did they had slaves but they were in all of the british conlonies like america after world war 2 london was destroyed and they needed help rebuilding the city so they sent ships to all of their colonies mainly africa and and the carrebiean offering homes and jobs to people to come help rebuild this was known as the windrush named after the first ship sent out after the city was rebuilt they tried to deport the people that came to help and thos that werent deported were given council homes(think section 8 housing) at the literal ends of the city and thats what the ends are so most black people in the uk are only 2nd or 3rd generation uk citizens

Yeah - Sixty Minutes Live is like a jam session with artists and their guests/friends. It’s a dope platform. First track is Hail off MITM - it’s the song itself - not just the bars. 🔥🔥🔥 Yeah - they all need to self edit on any BBC show like this, but often they slip up (many times on purpose 😅) Not supposed to swear or reference drugs/weapons etc. Totally agree tbh about Feelin’ Myself - was not sold on the beat at all. Good to see the 3 legends Kano, Wretch and Chip perform together live but they deserved a better beat and production for the original collab. D Double E is a total legend. The ‘Dir-tee tee, that’s mreee mreee, bid-a-bop-bop!’ are his iconic ad-libs from long time - not just on the Class of Deja track. You remembered Footsie from the 60mins you did with Skepta, JME, Fekky, Dizzee and General Levy etc. Footsie and D Double E are in the Newham Generals crew. I would compare Kano & Ghetts to JayZ and Nas tbh - different obviously but the levels they brought to their scenes are comparable. D Double came out before them and so was massively looked up to by OGs like Kano, Skepta and Dizzee when they were starting out. The first real OGs/creators of the scene were Wiley and Dizzee, along with people like Lethal Bizzle, followed not long after by Kano. Those guys are like the first four pillars of grime as it came to be. That’s why I love the Kano line in ‘Class of Deja’: “Where were you back then? Where you back then? I was putting in work on a roof back then, with a few mandem…” It’s a nice double… it refers to the pirate radio days on the roofs of high rises in London doing Grime sets and clashes, and also implies that Kano helped to finish building the budding genre of Grime whose foundations were started by people like Wiley, Dizzee and D Double. Peshwari is an Indian naan bread common in restaurants over here 😅 Kano’s track Ps & Qs is like his early massive breakthrough track which cemented his legendary status in the scene and it is now a grime classic. His flows and delivery was real different. He was fairly young when he did it - Ghetts has a cameo in the video too. The last couple of guys that came in are from Heartless Crew, a UK Garage band that Kano and most of the other MCs in the clip would have grown up listening to, hence the gassed response 😅 Grime is a direct offshoot of UK Garage, dancehall and other influences. Garage was more about the vibe rather than the bars - Grime was a direct response to that… Wiley tried to MC at Garage raves originally but the DJs weren’t having it 😅 So Wiley went off and made Eskibeat to rap over, which is basically embryonic Grime. You should react to his track ‘Wot U Call It?’ to hear the evolution 👌

@@Jurnalist_ Jammer and Mak 10 (one of the original DJs from pirate radio days) did a DJ set on Mode London (a radio station) recently. Set was just a load of old school instrumentals and a vocals. Mak 10 drops the Lewi White remix at 37:00. Sounds a lot better and deeper than that vinyl rip up on youtube. Search for 'Mode London | Mak 10 B2B Jammer' if you want to check it out (not for a reaction though). I don't think the version on youtube does it justice.

Heartless crew (mighty moe and bushkin) were instrumental in Garage turning into grime. This is what was bubbling when Wiley and that gen came up with the style. The battles with Pay as you go were legendary. Most of the early bars the original grime heads would have been writing were written to go over garage beats at a time when there were no grime instrumentals. This is why garage is one of the main influences of grime and the genre it most closely resembles. These times D Double E was a drum n bass DJ and JME was too young to get into any of the raves. When grime started to blow up the garage dons got a bit mad as their crowds started to move over to the new ting, like Wiley told you on "wot do u call it" One of the greatest times in my life was when you used to get these early Sidewinder sets on cassette tape, as guys like Dizzee and Wiley got a bit of traction, they would often be on a show with Heartless and i cant ever forget probably the greatest example of this crossover period was probably about 2002 - 2005 and one of the best sets of all time for me personally = Dj Slimzee Dizzee Rascal Wiley Sidewinder 2003

Very true. But as American this likely hood to my perception is low so I gotta ask as we don’t have such cultural overlap with whites in America. It’s generally or always appropriation of the culture for financial gain never a true love or brotherhood of the minority culture they seek to take. Thus why when I see my boy it just put me off. Family’s from every race you can think of live & grow up together. He’s half Palestinian and half Iranian so he’s not white or Caribbean. Its a influence ting he would of grown up with Caribbean influence cause its massively ingrained in the UK specially in London so he would of adopted it from a young probably school days. Then by the type he started making music and being in a music crew it likely only made sense for it to come out in the music
