I agree with your observation that it feels like a musical number. I think this was a great piece by Alamat that featured a fusion of folk, rap, and pop and take on a socially relevant theme for Filipinos. This song samples a haunting Hiligaynon (one of the languages in the Philippines) lullaby song called “Ili-Ili”(meaning lull to sleep). The context of the original lullaby is it is sung by a sibling or another family member to a baby who has been crying because the mom is away. Alamat’s version talks about the plight of several Filipino families who are separated as one or both parents go overseas to work for a better life for their children. Their song is a conversation among siblings calling the attention of their sister who may be acting up or seems to be not contented with the gifts and relative abundance she has. The siblings are reminding their sister that what they are enjoying are fruits of their parent’s hard work and at the expense of them being away from their children. Oftentimes, the parents fill their absence with gifts to their children represented by boxes of goods (called a balikbayan box) which is often a common practice of overseas Filipino workers to send all sorts of goods. The sister (Lyca) responds in her lines that she is also bereaved by their absence and longs for when they will be together. In the true “Alamat” style, they have lines sung in four different Filipino languages (Tagalog, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, and Cebuano). And in their message to their parents, they change “ili-ili” to Ily Ily. Well done to Alamat.
