'That' was the Crystal Palace burning down in 1936...formerly in Hyde Park as the Empire Exhibition of 1851, relocated to Upper Norwood in 1853 and re-opened by Queen Victoria. The area became known as Crystal Palace (where I lived). An enormous green house. The main body of the building was 1,848 feet (563 m) long and 408 feet (124 m) wide; the central transept was 108 feet (33 m) high. The Crystal Palace established an architectural standard for later international exhibitions, several of which were likewise housed in glass conservatories.

FYI. 20th century monarchs. Edward VII. Reigned 1901-1910 George V. Reigned 1910-1936 Edward VIII. Reigned 1936. Never crowned. Britain had a lucky escape because he abdicated. George VI. Reigned 1936-1952. The coronation that was planned for his brother was simply changed to involve him instead. Elizabeth II. Reigned 1952-2022.

Clearing up some points/answering your questions. George the Seventh? There has not been a George VII. Do you mean EDWARD VII? Queen Victoria's husband was called ALBERT. Before Victoria her uncle was King - William IV. Edward VIII ( the one who abdicated) was not crowned, however May 12 1937, the day planned for his coronation, was used for George VI. To add to the confusion, monarchs often do not use the name by which they were known in the family as their Regnal Name. For example, Edward VIII (the one who abdicated ) was known as David in the family. George VI (father of Elizabeth ) was called 'Bertie' by his relatives.... To boot, Elizabeth was the second queen by that name in England, hence Elizabeth II. However the first Elizabeth was not queen of Scotland. At the time of Elizabeth II's succession there was considerable unrest in Scotland on this point. Happily it faded over time. The crowns of England and Scotland merged after Elizabeth I's death in 1603 when the King of Scotland, James VI inherited the crown and became James I of England. It needs a bit of untangling if you are new to the subject. And a final (?) plea: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE the film company is Pathé. Note the symbol above the 'e' giving it an 'ay' sound. This is called an acute. The origin of the company is French.

Just to add that Edward VII was also known to his family as "Bertie". The rule on regnal numberings is that the monarch takes the higher of the two possible regnal numbers in cases where the last English and Scottish monarchs of a particular name had different numbers. Should we ever have another James, he would be James VIII of the UK (not James III) as Scotland has already had 7 and England has had only two.

Well, I suppose that his pronunciation of the French name ‘Pathé’ is not much worse than the way it is pronounced in Britain, as ‘th’ is pronounced by the French as ‘t’, so the French pronunciation would be something like ‘Patay’.

PS; a bit of the footage of George V & Queen Mary, looks as if it's NOT from the ceremonies marking their coronations as British King regnant and Queen consort, but from the later Delhi Durbar that saw George acclaimed (and crowned??) as Emperor of India.

FOUR. So going backwards, 1953, Liz II's coronation, preceded by her dad's, George VI's, in 1937, preceded by HIS dad's, George V's in (i.i.r.c. 1910 or 11) preceded by HIS dad's, Edward VII's delayed crowning in summer1902 (he copped for appendicitis and had to have an op). PS; Victoria was preceded by one of her umpteen uncles William IV (1830-1837).. who in his case had followed his older brother, George IV, the former Prince Regent (1820-1830).

1:26 That would be George V, not George VII - I think you confused him with his father, Edward VII. What happened During his reign was WWI, which saw the collapse of three great empires (Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary; the emperors of Germany and Russia were George's first cousins) as well as all the minor German monarchies, and the collapse of the Ottoman empire, and all the political turmoil resulting thereof. 2:16 what is shown briefly is the coronation durbar in Delhi, India; King George V and his consort Mary were the only British monarchs to hold such an event. 2:41 The constitutional crisis was the abdication of Edward VII. 6:47 The marriage between George IV and Caroline of Brunswick was quite scandalous. They hated each other. After the birth of their only child, Charlotte, they led separate lives, both taking on numerous lovers. She was publicly sued for adultery, and even though the evidence was overwhelming, because the jurors hated George more than Caroline, she was acquitted. At his coronation, George had her barred from entering the cathedral.
@leehallam9365
@leehallam9365 24 күн бұрын
There were plenty of marital scandals before. George IV hated his wife and wouldn't let her come to his coronation. Edward VIII's mistress was at his death bed. Two of Henry VIII's wives were executed for adultery, at least one of them was guilty of it. Worst was probably Edward IT'S wife she and her lover deposed him and killed him with a hot poker up his backside.

Hi Connor, well done for reacting to that - which looks very like one of those AI productions with the typically misleading title - and that shows scenes that don't directly releate to what it's talking about! Yes, there were four coronations in the 20th Century: Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902, George V and Queen Mary in 1911, George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937, and Elizabeth II in 1953. You also have one or two scenes there of the Dehli Durbar of 1911, and also the Silver Jubilee procession of George V and Queen Mary, in 1935! The Abdication of Edward VIII at the close of 1936 meant that he never attended the coronation that had been planned for him on 1st May 1937, and was therefore never crowned. The coronation of his brother and successor, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, did go ahead on the same day - but a planned Durbar for December that year was posponed indefinitely owing to the poor state of the King-Emperor's health and in fact, never took place. Queen Victoria's husband was Prince Albert by the way - not Alfred, although their second son had that as his first Christian name.

I wonder why there was no Investiture of William as Prince of Wales ? ....... I remember Charles's Investiture, it seemed like a big deal at the time
@anthonycunningham8116
@anthonycunningham8116 25 күн бұрын
There is nothing to say there wont be, but it seems unlikely (And un necessary). The whole concept of a big ceremonial investiture for the Prince of Wales was a 20th century innovation which even at the time of Charles (who was only the second person to ever have such a ceremony) investiture, it was already thought a bit twee and artificial-a ceremony with little historical resonance as well as a fairly strange coronet that no one liked.

@@anthonycunningham8116Prince William pledged his allegiance individually in public at the Coronation so he would only be repeating those same words at an investiture. Does anyone know what happened to the coronet worn by the Prince of Wales at the investure in 1911? The coronet worn by him at the 1911 Coronation in London, misappropriated after the abdication, found its way back to the Crown Jewels collection in the Tower just after his death in 1972 but that is not the one worn in Wales.

@@MrBulky992 The investiture of Charles happened in 1969; since the Duke of Windsor still had the coronet worn by him in 1911 in his possession, a new one had to be made for Charles. Both coronets now reside in the Tower of London.

Sadly, Princess Margaret Rose, the late Queen Elizabeth's younger sister, also died from the same disease, both father and younger daughter being chain-smokers). I don't know - as I never witnessed on tv, either HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother - Consort to King George VI - or HM Queen Elizabeth_II, ever smoke themselves, although both were 'apparently' fond of a glass or two of Dubonnet (pronounced "_Du_bon_nay") in the evenings, and possibly (QE,TQM), a gin or three also ...but the latter may just be rumour?!
