Oh, please, please, please, watch ‘Lost in Austen’ the time travelling version of Pride and Prejudice, right up Gallifrey Gals strasse - and it features an absolute shedload of actors who have appeared in Doctor Who. A great game is to spot them - some harder than others - and name the episode(s) of Doctor Who they appear in! Plus it’s genuinely funny.

Definitely worth checking out the 2005 movie, as well as Sense & Sensibility w/Emma Thompson & Kate Winslet. For fun, you would get a kick out of the much more irreverent Lost in Austen (River Song is Mrs. Bennet!) and Austenland (Keri Russell and Jennifer Coolidge).

@usdutchkittyКүн бұрын
Usually because of the music, especially the BBC’s “Mr. Beveridge’s Maggot”. It is the BBC’s version, not an open source version, and they will strike people for it.
@sarasamaletdin457422 сағат бұрын
This is the first one I have found! Are there other reactions to this series? From people who have neither watched other versions or red the book?
@usdutchkitty20 сағат бұрын
@ there are a few but problem is that people who try to monetize reactions on it usually get hit by BBC hard. Usually by the music, specifically BBC’s rendition of “Mr. Beveridge’s Maggot”. The ones who have reacted are usually ones who have never read the novel.

You're correct, Chrispin Bonham-Carter is a third cousin once removed of Helena, he retired from acting and became a teacher, I wonder if he ever has moments where they're studying Austen in literature and realise he played Mr Bingley.

Yay! I love Pride and Prejudice and I really love that you chose this version, the prose of the book is so lovely. This version is what I consider a really good adaptation, they stay really close to the book, they incorporate a lot of lines from the book as well, and the costumes are very period accurate, while still showing character traits in their clothing (Mary's high necklines and simple dresses, Mrs Bennet's layers and layers of lace, Lydia's more revealing dresses compared to the rest of the sisters, the very bold and strong colours on the Bingley sisters etc tell us a lot about each of the characters, without completely ignoring the period costumes and look). Jane Austen has so many jokes and word play in her work and personally I think that P&P is the one with the most of that. The rest of the books do definitely have lots of wit as well, but there's more drama as well. Or maybe that's just because the angst and drama in P&P feels more small scale to me, compared to the more traumatic events that happen in Sense and Sensibility or Mansfield Park. In any case, I think it would be fun to compare this version to the 2005 movie if you ever get around to it. The many different versions are interesting in what they change or leave out. I think Charlotte Lucas kind of has a point with her luck comment. Mostly because a woman at that time had very little options to settle well, especially when most men (of that time, but it's still a thing today) focus on women's beauty or money instead of intelligence or mutual interests or compatible character traits etc. Short "courting" periods were kind of the norm, that combined with the kinds of things that would make a woman marriageable mean that people don't know each other super well when they do get married. So in general it's probably true that how a couple goes on has to do with a lot of luck. Charlotte can only make very oblique references if she's interested in a guy to show him. The fact that she's an "old maid" and not very pretty, (we don't actually know whether she isn't, but the few descriptions of her looks lean towards fairly plain) means that she doesn't have many choices, she thinks she isn't likely to get any marriage offers, so for her it feels like she has to accept any offer she might get. So for her, she is especially in a place where she doesn't really have the luxury of finding out more about her fiance before marriage. All that said, ideally people did get to know each other a bit of course, and being married does mean trying to keep working on the relationship and supporting each other, but realistically, that's not what happened to many people. If you end up liking this world it might be fun to also watch adaptations of the other books. The 1994 S&S movie is especially great, with the script written by Emma Thompson, whose Oscar acceptance speech is hilarious. I also enjoy the 2007 series, though that one has less humour in it. Persuasion has a great movie from around 1994 I think, but the 2007 movie also captures the melancholy really well. The recent movie with Dakota Johnson is very meh at best, from what I've heard. Emma has so many great adaptations, the two movies from 1995-ish are amazing, though I have to admit I prefer the Kate Beckinsale version, the tv series from 2008 or so is also great, they draw a lot of parallels between Emma and other characters which makes her privilege very clear. I haven't yet watched the version from 2020 but I've heard great things so it's on my watchlist. Northanger Abbey adaptations aren't very common, there is an 80s version that is... pretty bad tbh. But the 2006 tv movie is fun, even if they did spice things up quite a bit. Though to be fair, the books referenced in the story that the characters read, are pretty spicy as well, so I guess it's in line with that. 😁 Mansfield park's adaptations are usually not all that great, they tend to make Fanny a way more assertive character than she is in the book, and while a spunky and witty heroine might be more enjoyable if we don't have the mocking narration from the books, it kind of belittles the Fanny from the books who is the way she is for a large part because she was mistreated for a long time. The 1980s version isn't amazing, but the other adaptations (90s and 2009 I think) make her more like Lizzy, witty and bold, which doesn't really make sense.

To me, the thing about Darcy is that he expects more from everyone, including himself, and appreciates intelligence and wit wherever he finds it, including in women. He sees the same things in Lizzie that also make her her father's favorite. I can f**k with that. Paula. Persuasion is fire. You gotta get on that. But you're right, this is the Definitive(TM) adap of pnp. I was in HS when this came out and my parents were like you wanna do homework later and check out this show. And I was like... You're inviting me to do tv over homework? I accept? And from this sprang a long love affair with everything Austen. When Darcy is watching Lizzy drive away he does mean it that he's glad she's leaving. JA actually goes into that in the moment... he's having feelings for her so he's glad she's leaving bc he wants that distance so those feelings chill tf out. P&P&Zombies is a hoot. There are a lot of easter eggs for her other books and the Juvenilia, specifically "The History of England from the reign of Henry the 4th to the death of Charles the 1st. By a partial, prejudiced, & ignorant Historian." Her sense of humor and straight up sarcasm gives me life. I'd also recommend Bride & Prejudice as a delightful Bollywood-style adap. Bridget Jones Diary is a very, very loose, self-aware adap and also sees the return of Colin Firth as Mark Darcy. Fun. And has one of the best worst fight scenes in cinema. Then there's the longest adap in existence, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It's a web series that took place in real time over a year. Modern day, tho very 2013 energy now. Lizzie is a grad student and starts this vlog as part of her thesis. It was a masterpiece and won an Emmy for interactive media. There is the main yt vlog and 3 other spin-off yt channels telling smaller parts of the story. Lizzie also did q&a vids where she answered questions; real questions, scripted answers. All the characters had social media that made sense for them and would interact with each other and regular people. Stuff like twitter, tumblr, lookbook, LinkedIn, websites, etc etc. It was pretty phenomenal and immersive. And, while some of the beginning feels a bit dated now, the character arcs are so incredibly well done it is very worth watching.
