A first cousin is someone that share a grandparent with you, as you said, the child of a uncle or aunt. A second cousin is someone that share a great-grandparent with you, so it would be a grandchild of one of your grandparents siblings.

Capetians even ruled much longer in Portugal and Brazil that the video says. In 1580, when the House of Avis ceased to exist, a cadet branch started to claim the throne whilst Portugal briefly was ruled by the Spanish kings. But from 1640 onwards this family, the House of Braganza, ruled in Portugal and even gave emperors to Brazil in the 19th century. If the last 4 kings of Portugal were between 1853 and 1910 from another dynasty, Capetians ruled in Portugal for more than 700 years. Even today, two cadet branches claim the Portuguese throne, one of them, the most supported one, being of Capetian descent. The Grand Duke of Luxembourg's family also is a Capetian one, the Prince being a male descendant of Louis XIV of France and a distant cousin of the king of Spain. Odo, king of the Franks, was the first king of the dynasty between 888 and 898. 1100 years later, Capetians still are on a throne. But maybe not for very long because Felipe V of Spain's heir is his daughter.

In WW1 the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha changed its name to Windsor because Britain was at war with Germany and the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha was a German royal house. So they changed the family name to Windsor to make them sound more English.

@@SteamboatW Yes. And Prince Louis of Battenberg got shafted by the British press and politicians because of his name and place of birth (he was born in Graz, Austria) even though he had been recommended for the job of First Sea Lord by none other than "Jacky" Fisher himself, and had performed brilliantly in that post.

King Charles is technically part of the House of Mountbatten (a branch of the Oldenburg's). When he was born the government changed the rules to say that the heir to the thrown can take their mothers name, hence Charles remained a Windsor. In theory this means the UK monarch will now be Windsor from now until the end. It also means we have this strange scenario of Charles and William being Windsors, but the rest of the family are Mountbattens
@tommay6590
@tommay6590 2 жыл бұрын
Well that is true as far as the government of Britain could make this changes, I.e. for Britain and the Empire at this time. In Germany, Greece and Denmark they would under civil law all be Mountbatten or better Battenbergs as the original German name is. Visited the village of Battenberg in Hesse in 2019 and learned much😮😮😅😂

@@tommay6590 It would be extremely unlikely that any foreign government would purport to interfere with British law governing personal matters relating to British citizens, such as personal names (or the legality of marriages, come to that). In England & Wales, one's legal name is the name by which one is known. Women who marry do not legally take their husband's name unless they wish to assume it in place of a former surname. On marrying, couples can take either surname, or a combination of the two; they could even select another name entirely. Children of married women do not automatically take their father's name unless the mother and father so wish. Children of single mothers would normally take their mother's name, but, again, if the father and mother so wish, this could be the father's surname. All children could be given another surname entirely. Normally, a surname is given evidence by the birth certificate, but this name could be changed at any time by the parents, or by the child after the age of 18. It so happens that in the case of the monarch and immediate family, the surname to be taken is governed by law, but they are the only exceptions. Since none of them is covered by German, Greek, Danish or any other civil law, what the position there is totally irrelevant.

@@allenwilliams1306 ah sorry did not get your point here, I did not doubt that British government could make rule about naming in Britain for Brits. Since Charles III is entitled to have passports of Dänemark, Greece and Germany due to be a Battenberg their names would apply. And if you will be very technically George V did not changed his last name but the way his house was styled.

8:25 The Netherlands were part of the inheritance of House Luxembourg to House Habsburg (Albrecht of Habsburg was the son-in-law of Emperor Sigismund). As one branch of Habsburg took over the Spanish crown (by marriage), the Habsburg Emperor gave the Netherlands to this branch. 8:50 The House of Orange-Nassau also reigned the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg until the death of Wilhelm III in 1890. Since Luxemburg had at that time a rule of solely male succession, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands could not become the Grand Duchess. Instead the Grand-Duchy went to another branch of the family, the House of Nassau-Weilburg (which had lost their Duchy in Germany due to annexion by Prussia in the German War of 1866). 9:40 The Carolingian dynasty was founded by Karl Martell, who was maior domus (and the power behind the throne) to the Merovingian kings; the Merovingians were the founders of the Frankish Kingdoms of Neustria (the West) and Austrasia (the East). His son Pippin the Younger became King in 751. Karl Martells grandson were Karlmann who was King from 768-771, ruling Aquitania, the Provence, Burgundy, the Alsace and Alemannia, and Karl, who was King 768-800, ruling since 771 the whole empire. He was also called Carolus Magnus or Charlemagne. 12:33 Kaliningrad was founded around 1255 as a castle of the Teutonic Order. In 1283 the town of Königsberg was founded ("King's Mount" or "King's Castle", named after King Ottokar II of Bohemia, who had led two crusade expeditions against the pagan Prussians). In 1457 it became the main seat of the Teutonic Order, after rebelling mercenaries sold the former main seat Malbork castle to the King of Poland. The last Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in Prussia was Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, a side branch of the House of Hohenzollern-Brandenburg; he and most of his knights converted to Lutheranism and turned with the consent of his overlord and uncle King Sigismund of Poland the State of the Order into the Duchy of Prussia within Poland. His son lost the regency because of mental disorder, first to his cousin George Frederick of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, then to his other cousin Joachim Frederick of Hohenzollern, Margrave of Brandenburg, with the consent of Sigismund III Vasa. So the Duchy came to the House of Hohenzollern in Brandenburg. It became independent due to the Swedish-Polish war around 1655 and a self-appointed Kingdom in 1701. 14:41 The Welfs started as Frankish nobles in the Carolingian Empire; one branch got estates in Upper Swabia, another became Kings of Burgundy in 888. During the 12th century the Welfs were Dukes of Saxony (nowadays Lower Saxony), Bavaria and Spoleto, ruling also Sardinia and Tuscany, as well as allied (and related by marriage) with House Plantagenet (Richard Lionheart); Henri the Lion lost in 1180 however both German Duchies as he rebelled against the Emperor, and had to go into exile in England. In 1194 he got Lower Saxony back. 15:05 Georg of Hannover was the son of Princess Sophia of the Palatinate. daughter of Elizabeth Stuart and cousin of Queen Anne Stuart. Sophia was the designated heir of Queen Anne, but died before her, so her son became the next King. Queen Victoria was the last Queen of House Welf; she married Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (House Wettin). 17:05 The reason why so many Houses are of German origin is simply the Holy Roman Empire. This Empire consisted of four Kingdoms, of which the German Kingdom was by far the largest and most powerful; this Kingdom was itself a federation of Duchies, Margraviates, Palatinates and Landgraviates (as well as some Imperial cities, Imperial abbeys and Prince-Bishopries). Each of the Duchies had his own powerful dynasties, which married into each other, but also into other Houses throughout Europe, and as the Empire began to weaken, some secured themselves thrones in other countries. It was the power and political weight of the German Houses, which let them spread over the whole of Europe. It was not "safer to go with German princes" - they were for the most time more powerful than most Kings, which made them valuable allies. The House of Wettin is nearly as old as the House of Welf; they played a major role in the German "colonization of the East", becoming Landgraves of Thuringia, Margraves of Meißen and Lausitz and Dukes of (Upper) Saxony.

The Netherlands(modern day Belgium, the Netherlands & Luxembourg) were part of the Holy Roman Empire. And they were first ruled as an collective, by the Dukes of Burgundy. Emperor Charles V inherited the rule over the Netherlands, and became the Lord of the Netherlands. When Charles V abdicated in favor of his son & younger brother, the title and rule went to his son. His son was king Philip II of Spain. That’s how the Netherlands was briefly ruled by Spain, because a revolt would break out. This is known as the Dutch Revolt, or the 80 Years War. The northern Netherlands became the Dutch Republic, and later became kingdom of the Netherlands. The southern Netherlands eventually became the Austrian Netherlands, and later became modern day Belgium and Luxembourg.

The Netherlands seperate provinces like flanders, holland, utrecht , etc got inherited and some conquered by the burgundians (east middle current day France). All this got inherited by an Austrian von Habsburg (Son of the Austrian King and Holy Emperor) who married the Spanish Queen ( Castillian). So when Austria and Spain split the Netherlands became Spanish posession. So basicly a lot of royal incest.

Hmmm...while it is true the House name goes through the male line. The daughters have always been a big play in this chess of politics. The House of Oldenburg, for example, was known for marrying their daughters into every single royal house in Europe. So it is more complicated than this. The whole European royal family tree is a big mop where everyone is related to everyone. Also, there are quite a few noble houses that are known for their political influences that was steering the roads from behind. 2nd cousins are the children of cousins. 3rd cousins are the children of 2nd cousins and so on... Kaliningrad was in former Prussia yes. But the city itself is unrelated to the kingdom of Prussia as it is today.

(House) Oldenburg became part of Germany. This just to avoid confusion. The Capets are based on the Robertians which also came - thats the most accepted theory - from now Germany (Worms). But one has anyway to keep in mind that all of the great dynasties have their roots in the Germanic dynasties which found as tribe or tribe confederation leaders after the falll of the Western Roman Empire almost all kingdoms and empires. The biggest was at first the Frankish Empire. The 'base region' of the Frankish Empire was Austrasia (with Aachen/(Germany) right in the center) which was also one of the reasons why Karl der Grosse (wrongly named Charlemagne - this name makes absolutely no sense. Karl had the same 'name' as Karlmann, his brother, just without the addition 'mann'. All sources also in all other languages point to a Karl/Carl, from Germany to Scndinavia, Slavic languages, Carlo Magno in Italian, Spanish . 'Charlemangne' is just a later modified name of Karl/Carl by the French later - which the English copy-pasted due to the Normans. But using this name is in every way misleading It also doesnt fit to the 'Karolingians' or Karolus/Carolus Magnus - the indeed existing Latin versioin.

After Burgundy rule, with lots of autonomy and prosperity for the Netherlands (then still including Belgium) the king of Spain inhereted it and started authoritarian rule to enforce catholicism. The Dutch revolted because they wanted religious tolerance and manage their own affairs so they started an 80-year war for independence and founded the Dutch Republic early on in that war. The Orange-Nassaus didn't rule or reign the Dutch Republic. They became a very influential family but the Stadtholders of Orange were appointed by Dutch parlement, and several times they weren't because they got too influential. William (III) of Orange led the Dutch invasion and occupaton of Britain and took the throne, giving them religious tolerant protestant rule, the current constitutional parliamentary monarchy, bill of rights and economic reform, including the Bank of England.

short, simplified history of Prussia: there was original Prussia (speaking language similar to Lithuanians and Latvians), they were pagan and bordered Poland. Poland recently joining catholic club wanting to make some points with Pope (at that time The guy at whose good side you wanted to be) decided to christianize the Prussians. To do that polish duke invites mercenaries from the west (Teutons - christian order, kind of like crusades veteran's order) and proposes them a deal to give land in exchange for help with pagans. It gets out of hand and Teutons get way stronger that anyone expected and started to be threat to Poland/Lithuania. Series of wars happen, reformation/counter-Reformation happen and order decides to secularise creating a Dutchy, which first was a client state of Poland/Lithuania and with years broke away and due to marriges gets connected with German states (they were german speakers and by that time the original prussians got either killed off or germanized). Poland-Lithuania gets weak, while Prussia goes up. Power uped Prussia partitions Poland and expiriences it's golden age. German unification happens, WW1, Nazi Germany, ww2. After ww2 Nazi Germany gets partitioned and eastern side of Prussia is split between Poland and USSR. USSR part with Konigsberg gets renammed to Kaliningrad, Germans that lived there were either killed off or expelled to modern day Germany (or Syberia) and resettled with Russians. And here we are today with big historical area called Prussia spreading around southern Baltic coast -eastern part is Kaliningrad, middle is polish and western is german. Original Prussians are long time extinct and the name is sometimes being used to confuse people from outside the region

In Europe, prior to 1500, most people didn't have last names (a Roman custom that had lapsed), unless you were nobility at some level. Others didn't get last names until 1800 (release of Jews from the ghettos). The importance of lineage is control of property. Peasants didn't have any. Genetic tests are pretty clear about German ancestry, so a test would tell in your case. Other W Europeans are so vanilla, they don't have a clear genetic signature.

His method means that he didn't mention some of the most well-known and important dynasties just because they ruled only one kingdom. It's not very sensible imho, as the Romanov or the Plantagenets for example are super duper important for European history. Regarding what you said at the beginning, dukes or other nobles can be de facto more powerful than kings. The Plantagenet dynasty is a good example of that (even if they'll get the throne of England at some point, and keep it 300 years). Their combined hereditary territories in France (including their original land, Anjou) during the Angevin era were worth more than England.
