One of the reasons Henry VIII became "chunky" is that he had a serious leg wound from a joust where he was nearly killed. This may also have caused a personality-change, which may have influenced his later paranoia.
@weejackrussell
@weejackrussell 2 ай бұрын
He also had a head injury at the same time which is probably more likely to be the cause of the change in personality. Infections could also cause him to have periodic episodes of strangeness and personality changes! But he might just have been a rotter without any excuse for it! Most of the maltreatment of his wives was because of the overriding need for a male heir.

Just on his look alone, Henry VIII is the look I think of when I think "King of England". He was like 6 foot 2 , near 400lbs, huge chest, the beard, the extravagant clothing. A very striking look. He was a giant compared to the average man who would have only been around 5 and a half foot back then.

Yes. But what she didn’t realise was, she wouldn’t have lost her head. He didn’t dare frame and murder his foreign born wives. But his English born wives were his to do as he wanted. However, she may not have survived anyway. Henry was riddled with disease and childbirth was incredibly dangerous back then.

Never a truer word said than the last remark. Henry VIII had the undivided love/attention of his mother as is brother Arthur was away in Wales, learning how to be king. Henry commented he never got over the death of his mother and was always looking for a love similar to the love his mother given him, [albeit through rose-tinted glasses].

Whenever I see an American cartoon presented as English history, I realised a coupla years ago that it's gonna be trash, so I don't usually watch - no idea what made me watch this - apart from the fact that it was about Henry. Henry is - as you said - known pretty much globally, so one doesn't expect anyone to tell porkies (lies) about him - as so many people (not just in the UK) are familiar with his story. As usual with these cartoons they present 500yr old history as a Las Vegas show and look at history through a contemporary lens, rather than positioning it as it was seen in the time it occured. (And how the hell did North Korea get into the story?) This stupid clip refers to "Tonker truck" battles and "Poor little UK?" and a people who "laugh at" Henry... while wondering why female offspring were not in the line of succession? A Bullshit "history" which does nothing to explain Monarchical rule or the influence Henry had...and how this contributed to our history.

I think people in the UK would immediately think of famous American historical figures such as: Men- Abraham Lincoln, George Washington or Theodore Roosevelt. Women - Pocahontas, Helen Keller, Harriet Tubman would also be on my list. But it could be a very much wider range, e.g. some of the famous cowboys, inventors, writers, pop singers etc. Currently Alexander Hamilton may spring to mind due to the musical. Which famous British women do Americans all know about? Would it be Queen Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Florence Nightingale?

03:35 - he sounds just like Donald Trump, doesn't he? I mean, just imagine Donald in one of those fancy Tudor outfits... Women had always been able to inherit the English throne, Connor - Henry had no need to change any of the succession rules for reasons of gender; but the system (until 2013!) was male-preferred primogeniture - the belief being that as "the weaker sex," women were inferior to men.

Henry was actually pretty romantic and not as sex mad as his reputation suggestsHe treated Catherine of Aragon badly, but that was because she wouldn't cooperate, and with her nephew controlling the Pope, he couldn't get his way. Anne of Cleves was much more sensible and was declared to be his sister. Anne Bolynne was the one who was essentially judicially murdered, the charges were all most certainly false. She had kept him waiting, then not delivered. Catherine Howard was guilty of adultery, and it came as a complete shock to Henry, it was not something he wanted, and adultery by the Queen was Treason as a child produced by it could become king. Execution was the law. Catherine Parr, had the odd dangerous moment herself as she was a religious radical and Catholics wanted her dead. Henry was her third husband, and after him, she married the man she loved, one of Jane Seymour's brothers, who ended up being executed, she had died in childbirth. I doubt Jane would have been in trouble had she lived, she gave him a son, that made her his favourite.

Henry VIII is famous (or infamous) because, wives aside, he was, perhaps, the last absolutist monarch in England we ever had (Charles I gave it a go much later, of course, but I think you've seen what happened to him). Furthermore, he was an improbable one: he was Henry VII's younger son and so was not groomed for the throne like his older brother Arthur had been. He had always been the extravagant spender, the dandy, the athletic muscleman in the background- like a sort of Renaissance equivalent of a pinup boy- as well as an intelligent reader and scholar. Then suddenly his brother dies (which is a shame; I would kind of liked us to have had a King Arthur outside of legend), his sister-in-law Catherine of Aragon becomes his own wife and he comes out of the shadows and into the forefront of English and European politics. A further reason for his significance is that even after his death, he thrust England into political and religious turmoil because of what he left behind. Though he split from Rome, he would never have used the word "Protestant": that was only really reserved for the ideals of Martin Luther and he remained staunchly anti-Lutheran. Still, even in his Rome-friendly days, the foundations for limiting clerical powers and converting disused monasteries into grammar schools had already been laid by his former Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey, so he just did more of that, with a few chopped heads for good measure. However, when his young son Edward VI ascended the throne, there was nothing to stop the the impressionable boy and hence the country from becoming more "anti-papal" and hence, more Protestant. Then, when the dying Edward VI tried to name his cousin Lady Jane Grey as his heir and she lost her head, Henry's eldest daughter Mary I ("Bloody Mary") tried to turn everything around again by making England Catholic again, marrying Felipe II and so becoming the first and only woman to be Queen of England and Spain at the same time. Her mercurial personality was so marked that burning for heresy almost became routine. Then, after she died, the least probable of Henry's children, Elizabeth I became queen, flipped England back to Protestantism and not only rejected Felipe's gestures but actually secured her place on the throne by fending him off in the Spanish Armada when he tried to challenge her. This and her extensive patronage to the arts provided stability for England- but not Scotland, since she also imprisoned and executed her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. No matter how you look at it, the spirit of Henry VIII lived clearly through each of them, with all his strengths and weaknesses. A final thing of note on Henry VIII specifically is that yes, he did enjoy jousting (which was still part of military training for royalty, though it was not strictly used in wartime by the time he was on the throne) and there is a record of him suffering a bad head injury during one such match. Recent examination of his skull revealed evidence of damage consistent with a badly mended fracture and it may have been this- as opposed to syphilis, as was thought for a long time- that made him increasingly erratic, paranoid and unpredictable the more he aged. He was also fond of football of all things as a younger man and it is possible he may have helped the invent the world's first football boots with the help of his personal shoemaker- but that's another story.

Our Henry was a bit of a lad in his day and then he met some woman who had been raised in the French Court and it all went southwards after that. Whenever I visit Hampton Court, I do get an odd vibe. Of course he should never have become king, if not for his brother's early demise. We would have had a real King Arthur if not. Of course Henry did eventually have a son, Edward VI, but he never survived long enough to become an adult king, but did reign for six years until his death aged 15. "Bloody" Mary I took over from her step brother and then came Elizabeth I, so no men involved for about 87 years.

Knightly tournaments became a thing in the 1000s and 1100s and jousting continued until the end of the 1500s, but I don't know enough to say when the peak of jousting was. The 1200s is often described as the "golden age of chivalry" (as in actual knights, not assholes with a fedora), but given how much manuals of chivalry were published during the 1400s and 1500s, I don't think there's a single period you can point to for it being more popular

Washington or Lincoln, maybe JFK or FDR for the answer to your first question. Jousting was at its peak a little earlier, probably 1400s, but was still popular in Henry's time, and Henry was good at it... until an accident early ion his reign when he was thrown from his horse while jousting, and the horse fell on him. Quite a few scholars believe that he suffered a head injury in the accident which caused his character to change. Up until then he'd been a good leader but after that, well, as they say, the rest is history. And all egg cells have X chromosomes, sperm have either X or Y. So whether the baby is XX (female) or XY (male) is all down to the father's sperm.
