I think her feelings are genuine. In the UK neighbours may have different politics but we shrug and agree to differ. It would seem that in the US, the same situation is tearing your country apart. Black or white - no grey. In many reaction videos, time after time we see that your way of life is ‘live to work’ rather than ‘work to live’. Our work balance is good - holiday entitlement, maternity leave, health cover for all, so many things that we take for granted. So, Connor, I think she has reason to be sad.

I'm an older person in East London. I use 'love' to address women of any age. You'll hear working-class people say it more often than middle-class people. It's also rarer for younger people to say it. I've had women friends try and discourage me from saying it because they think it can be patronising, but TBH it's an ingrained habit and I also think it's quite a harmless endearment.

The problem arises because the name "English muffins" was dreamt up by an American for marketing purposes. It was what he called his version of what we call crumpets. His actual recipe was a closely guarded secret (like coca cola). So now all Americans call crumpets English muffins and us Brits have no idea what they are talking about.

As a Welshman living in America I agree with her view on the difference between America and Britain civility. America is a very polarized country with very extreme differing views, Britain has a much more centralized view of things and opposite view points are not as important or vocused on as America, also the media has a huge role to play in this. British media is not as reliant on viewing figures as America so they don't need to push an agenda in order to increase viewing numbers.

I come from the London area but lived in Manchester for quite a few years, and as others have said, there are cultural differences between the two. It is much easier to strike up a conversation with a stranger in Manchester. Although I suggest being an attractive young woman does help. If she tried to do that on the London Underground people would move seats thinking she was a crazy woman. As for her point at the end about being sad because Manchester reminds her of the US she grow up in. When she made the video I believe she had only been in the country a month so she may have been looking at the country through “rose-tinted glasses “ not sure if that is an American expression as well. There are deep divisions in the UK as well, particularly in politics at the moment. Always have been in politics but very strong at this There are also differences in the economies, North and South with major infrastructure spending for example being focused in the south. This lame duck government we have at the moment has been talking about levelling up these differences for years, not much evidence it is happening. However, from this side of the Atlantic, the US seems to have taken division and polarisation to a different level. The vast majority of people in the UK like or at the very least tolerate each other and don’t feel the need to shoot our neighbours. Well most of the time.

I can understand why she feels sad specifically in the North (she is in Manchester - great city) as it is very respectful to all races and creeds etc and the multi-culturalism is celebrated (some ways more than London?). The "Bee" became extra symbolic after the bombing of the Ariana Grande concert which was a horrific tragedy but also brought the city together. Googled it for you: Tea leaves contain 3.5% caffeine, while coffee beans have 1.1-2.2%. However, the coffee brewing process uses hotter water, which extracts more of the caffeine from the beans
@stewedfishproductions7959
@stewedfishproductions7959 11 ай бұрын
That's the confusion: When comparing tea leaves with coffee beans - tea leaves actually contain more caffeine than coffee beans. But, then the two drinks are made and during the 'brewing' process, coffee’s stronger because its extracted more than tea! The result being that coffee end's up with a stronger caffeine content than tea. As a 'rule of thumb', coffee has about twice as much caffeine as tea. Although the caffeine levels can vary a lot, in both beverages, because of several different factors.

So that means McDonalds coffee has the most caffeine, as their coffee uses water just off boiling point. It's so hot it's caused burns when it spills; there's been several lawsuits, and a John Oliver segment on his HBO show.

I didn't know that. I always use quality loose-leaf tea, never bags. Caffeine doesn't seem to affect me - tea or coffee. From what I've seen on TV, most Americans regard "Tea" as what we call "infusions", ie not traditional black tea. Infusions wouldn't have any caffeine?
@stephenpetermay1721
@stephenpetermay1721 11 ай бұрын
Need to review tea making technique. (Black)Tea should be made with boiling water onto leaves in a prewarmed pot. This is to raise the "strike" temperature to extract the "base" oils for a darker "tarry " brew. Green (unfermented) tea uses lower temperature. Coffee is generally made with water "just off the boil". Espresso machines can have higher temperatures but the caffeine content is largely determined by the roasting temperature of the beans. The dark "high" roasted beans have lower caffeine than the " mild" roast (and lower aromatic content) when measured by volume (scoop).

Much of this is regional. People are usually more genuinely friendly the further you get from London. There are of course exceptions? I'm originally from just outside London but I am just a nosy git? The weather here in the East (inland) is generally different, usually far better, to that in the north-west where she is. It's also common to use regional slang when addressing people, even strangers. We tend to call people Luv or Mate in the south-east, my friend from Nottingham says "Me Duck" and my friends in the north-east of England call people, mostly of the opposite sex "Pet".

The moral is, don't believe everything said by someone who's been here just 1 month 😂 ...And no, bombing has nothing to do with Ireland in Manchester lol, plus that all ended 30yrs ago. It was an Islamic extremist suicide bomber at a music contest, huge news, very sad. Cockney is London, not Manchester. Not true 'Europeans don't like ice' ?? What's that all about? We do. And I've got 2 freezers! And trust me, Conor, Crumpets are nothing like Muffins, we eat both here. Go buy some Crumpets and you'll never go back.

I have no clue the political beliefs of my family, friends, or work colleagues and I don't want to know, it is none of my business. I think that is a big difference between here to that in the US. We haven't got that divide and tension. Even if we know, we keep it separate and don't let it interfere with our day to day activities. Yes, there are some that are loud about their beliefs but I would say they are in the minority.

I believe the bombing she refers to was the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. 'Love' is a unisex expression, and many Northerners will also refer to you as 'lass' (girl/woman) or 'son', 'lad' (boy/man) even though they are no relation to you. Nor do you require an accent to strike up a conversation. Also, the UK does not have 365 days of overcast and cold weather. The UK experiences four seasons. Spring is beautiful, with the flowers blooming and baby animals being born. If there was no rain, the grass would not be so lush and green. From what you have said about your own weather, you have similar summers, but you get the extremes in winter. You need to get over for a proper visit and to explore all the places you have seen. You will be made very welcome. I know I was. ❤️🇬🇧

Tea leaves contain more caffeine than coffee beans weight for weight but when made in to a drink coffee is brewed stronger than tea so you use much more coffee bean by weight per cup than you use tea leaves so in the final drink, 1 mug of coffee has more caffeine than 1 mug of tea

We'll say it again. Crumpets are like baked thick pancakes, spongy on the inside, crunchy on the outside when toasted. Forget the muffins that are like individual cakes, that's a US thing. Real muffins are like small round, flatish, ciabatta rolls with flour dusted on the outside that you cut in half first, then toast, then butter etc.......... JUST GOOGLE BREAD MUFFINS IN THE UK? There's even a BBC recipe there!

You definately have a point about the accent thing, though I doubt that extends to dating. That said she is in Manchester, and people are generally more friendly and relaxed in the North if England as opposed to the South East,. The terror attack she is referring to wasn't the Irish nationalist terror attack of 1996, it was the bombing of the Ariana Grande concert in 2017 in which 22 people were murderered by an Islamist terrorist.

'Love' or 'duck' (often in the north of England) are expressions generally used by men to address women & female children and by women to address men or women or male/female children. So it's a gender specific term that women have more scope/freedom to use the expression with anyone than men do.

CONNOR - You are WRONG about crumpets versus muffins - SO MANY PEOPLE have told you in the comments section and you STILL just don't 'get it !' They are NOT THE SAME. Firstly, they look 'similar' - Not, as you say "exactly alike". An ESSENTIAL difference (apart from the taste and texture!), is one is made WITH yeast and make the little holes all over the surface. DOH! Or should I say 'dough'? (LOL) 😅 😂 🤣 😎

Manchester/Salford my favourite City (ies) in the UK. 😊 Brits, especially the northern are very friendly with everyone. The Manchester Bee has nothing to do with football. It's the city of Manchester's logo. All homes have a fridge/freezer and most have washing machines and dryers. Internet is fast mostly and a lot cheaper than she said. Politics is always difficult to compare country to country. US politics is of worldwide interest as US is the biggest economy and power in the world. There's a saying "When America coughs the world catches a cold".

No, as others say, crumpets are nothing like muffins. Crumpets can feel a little plasticky, not soft like a muffin, crumpets are full of small holes when sliced in half. Nothing more tasty than eggs Benedict, on a cut in half, toasted muffin, as long as the sauce is made correctly. Also, crumpets, again, cut in half and toasted, spread butter on and raspberry/strawberry jam. Part of great British food. Then again, most Americans never go to Britain, and the myth has been passed down that our food is bland, totaly wrong. Check out those Americans that go to London, and taste the variety of different foods at the Borough market, it will be an eye opener for American's.

"love" -working class women can call anyone "love". Men can call women "love" but it can come across a bit creepy depending on how they do it/who they are (shouting it from a transit van window for example). Pretty ubiquitous im northern england and working class London - EastEnd etc. Funnily enough some glasgow women use the work c*nt in almost the same way, and i love it.

Oddly, it takes about an hour and a half for caffeine to start taking effect because its mechanism is very indirect (eventually triggering adrenaline production which is what wakes you up). Most of the *perceived* effect of caffeine is placebo (your brain preemptively triggering adrenaline production when you drink), with the real effects happening later. In most people that is. If you have ADHD then I believe it has other effects on the brain that happen faster (which is why I drink so much caffeine).

You're probably right about the accent provoking interest... to a point. However, the people in the North of England are different gravy. We really are friendly, welcoming and chatty with everyone.
