There is a lot of what ifs in this video. Yes, if the potential of the find is realized, Sweden could provide Europe with all or most of the rare earth minerals needed for the clean energy transformation that is coming. BUT, that is not known right now. Norway also has made finds recently. Between the two nations, there is some real potential. There is no denying that. But the video didn't include timescale. Even if the finds are what we hope, it will still take a decade or two to get to production and cash in. As a Swede I'm certainly crossing my fingers hoping for the best.

South America has a lot, and I mean a lot, of Lithium. The Atacama desert (on the border of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, often refered to as the ABC-triangle) is one of the best places on earth for it. The problem is that it's also one of the absolute driest places on earth and a place where the radiation from the sun acctually fries electrical cables on a regular basis. The area is outright hostile to human habitation, so there are very little in form of infrastrucure or population centers anywhere near the place. (Those things also makes it one of the best place on the planet to do stargazing in, on the fringes of the desert. It's on a high altitude, the complete absence of water vapor makes the skies clear all the time and the lack of light pollution works well). The main benefit of the Swedish deposits is not that it's big, it's that it is next to existing, working mining infrastructure. The rail links to harbours are already there, as is of course the harbours (Narvik in Norway, connected by the Malmbanan, or Ore line, rail link from Sweden is the Atlantic harbour for global trade, and for export to Germany or Poland, the port of Luleå on the Baltic is also connected), there is an experienced and well educated workforce already in the area, and roads big enough to carry heavy mining equipment are already in place. The Swedes have been mining Iron there for centuries already.
@tobias_dahlberg
@tobias_dahlberg Жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, yes! This is the big thing here. Most of what is difficult to set up is already there. This means it is much, much cheaper to get going there as opposed to finding a deposit in a country where you have no infrastructure or experience of mining.

The only serious problem is, most of all the other resources required to manufacture crap we don't need - the only thing making this geological deposit seem valuable - are not available to be extracted sustainably. Pretending otherwise quickens the unfolding ecological crisis. The value therefore has been grossly overestimated. Funny how places like Sweden and Norway - among the least self-sufficient nations - actually need to cling on to a business-as-usual model more than most. So much so, they seem wilfully content to defend economic ideology at any cost to the environment therefore to humanity. Most civilised in the world, aye?

No, our politicians will screw up every opportunity for tax money when it comes to exporting these metals, minerals, etc. Then our environmental laws and our employment and personnel laws will eat up most of the profit. so no companies will even want to try to operate any mines. in the best case, the Swedish state, via a state-owned company, will conduct the mining and exports. and the best thing we Swedes will get from this is a job. but all the youth who are of the right age for this type of work will never want to work in mining (spoiled socialists to brat kids) and don't think the immigrants will move to the mining towns. they get so much in grants/benefits so they'd rather sit at home in the suburbs with state grants/benefits and cheer on terrorist groups like Hamas.

Nah. It's far from getting insanely rich. People already knew there are rare earth materials. This is not a new news. Mining for these materials was not feasible in the past due to high mining cost. Now Sweden is thinking about mining them despite of high mining cost in order to be independent from China. This means there will be little to no profits by mining these materials. Sweden may even loose money by doing this. However, this decision is not a economic one but political one. Even though Sweden loose money during mining process itself, it may pay off in long run by being independent of China and it's influence in Swedish and European economy.
