The problem he's talking about with building a second car tunnel (Silvertown) right next to an existing car tunnel (Rotherhithe) is it's a bit like adding a lane to each side of a crowded freeway - you get a year or two of respite, and then people notice that it's a 'quick route' and start start making more car journeys on it (rather than not making a journey at all or doing the same errand locally), so it goes back to being clogged - only instead of six lanes of pissed-off drivers and smoking tailpipes , you've now got eight, and you've probably killed off some of the local shops by doing so.

The Netflix question: It's not that the US version is better than the UK version, it's that there is different content on both. A lot is the same, but for licencing and interest reasons, they have different shows on each. It's just better to have access to more.

Boris in his wisdom thought he’d do away with the ferries from England and Scotland to N Ireland and build a bridge instead … couple of problems … it would have had to be built over Beaufort’s Dyke, a 300m deep, 2 mile wide trench in the Irish Sea. And there was the other issue that it’s been used as a munitions dump in the 1970s. Plus it would have cost £335bn ($420 billion). A tunnel was also proposed, which was a but cheaper (£209 billion) but the issues remain.
@jakeclough8090
@jakeclough8090 2 жыл бұрын
And the fact that a tunnel to Ireland is completely useless for the uk. The number of people who need to go to Ireland is tiny in comparison to the number who use the channel tunnel, which is obviously much shorter in distance, less deep underground and better rock to dig in than to Ireland. It will never happen and should never happen

When you have a congested road (let's say Highway or Freeway) and you expand it to cope with and ease the current amount of traffic, people will automatically think "Hey, there's more space there now", so more people will use it (via the mode it's constructed for), thus generating more traffic, instead of just easing the current one or better decrease the usage of personal cars etc. etc.

Why? Because the bridge has to be a minimum height to allow vessels beneath and the footway must be no steeper than 1 in 12 for wheelchair users. They therefore proposed to shallow the ramps by employing an 'S' shape with a gentle climb at each side of the river (educated guess from pleb designer in the construction industry).

I live in Dartford, not far from Dartford Crossing. This crossing is the most east on River Thames. This means anyone who lives east of Dartford (it means everyone in Kent) will use it to go to the big shopping mall in Thurrock in Essex on the other side of Thames. Government made a decision to build a new crossing (partially tunnel) in Swanscombe (east of Dartford). Two problems 1. It is a nature reserve/marshes which have a lot of important little creatures. And 2. it will take them at least 10 years to build it, so it will be too small for the amount of cars. For comparison Dartford + 7 surrounding villages had in 1995 population of around 50000 people now the same are has nearly 180000 and they building 3 more estates (large groups of houses) each one will have population of about 25000.

The bridges with hairpin approaches allow the necessary height to be reached without having to extend the approach too far, or it being too steep. It doesn't matter too much if the on and off ramps are curved, or straight as it is the steepness of the ramp and the height of the bridge that defines it's length. That length can be achieved in a straight line or by ramp making a number of turns. So a curvy ramp might fit into a semi derelict area that doesn't require you to buy lots of buildings and knock them down to build it that a straight ramp might. This is particularly true for pedestrian bridges where the curves won't slow down the speed of traffic.

The bit where he's walking through a road tunnel is the Rotherhithe Tunnel, which is *technically* usable by pedestrians. I say technically, because it would be utterly insane to use it. Fun story: when I first moved to London, I got locked out of my house late on a freezing night. After riding the night buses back and forth to stay warm, there was a gap of a couple of hours and in desperation I decided to walk through the Rotherhithe Tunnel. I got carbon monoxide poisoning and probably took a couple of years off my life.

Why doesn’t East London have a bridge? Because they are a waste of money. Money is better spent on improving the tube & DLR (a Docklands Light Railway - driverless overground rail) & developing City Airport in East London. It’s an area that was flattened by bombs in World War 2 &, apart from Canary Wharf financial district being built in the 1980s, it remains desolate. It’s also political. A Conservative Government is not going to invest in the UK capital which votes for the Labour Party. Connor - This video is timely as the Elizabeth line (a tube line named after the Queen) opened this week linking London East to West. Check it out.

There should be a bridge &/or tunnel at Woolwich, connecting the N & S Circulars. Also, the S Circular needs to be replaced with a much better road, as planned for Ringway 2.

In Richmond on the east bank to the south of the bridge there is a massive flood field (Petersham Meadow) which is kept fallow, with sluice gates. When the Thames threatens to flood the field is intentionally flooded to save other local areas from the same fate. It’s routinely used 4 to 6 times a year and has been even since the Thames Barrier. Same with the Ham Flats further south. Simple solution.

The Lower Thames Crossing has NOT been rejected by locals. Yes there are some who don't want it, but the area as a whole wants it very much, and it's needed to facilitate journeys from East Kent to Essex/Suffolk/Norfolk. It would save a lot of travel time, as well as easing pressure on the very congested Dartford crossings. The Lower Thames Crossing is currently in its final consultation phase and it's expected to go ahead and be built by 2030. I live just a few miles from where the crossing will be.

@@calibrax and? The positioning of the bridge is not going to be as the crow flies at best it’ll be 70 miles and will never get used enough to be worth it. If you aren’t going towards or from the M25 or a major city like Birmingham or Manchester in this country you have to take a detour it is not cost effective to have a roads going literally everywhere.

Flooding is a serious risk for London. The Thames Flood Barrier is a interesting piece of engineering. It's sections lay flat on the river bed and can be rotated upwards when unusually high tides are expected. It might be worth looking into. London wouldn't cope very well if the Underground (tube) network was submerged.

When I used that Fartford Crossing 6,000 times workwise it took 30 minutes into Essex (though I did NOT travel in peak periods which are horrendous). THat SAME journey would involve Walking, Buses, Trains, and Tubes and take nearly 5 times longer EACH WAY so ONE Hour's return would be bearer FIVE hours.It ain't happening Jay.M8...
