Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through KZbin videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

@@nzlemming They're not the same guy, not exactly, though one person has been in both suits. There was a rights issue with the Lord Buckethead character and the guy that was playing him created Binface as an alternative but they both ran in 2019 with different people in the costumes.

As others have said here, you really need to watch the full sketch. It was actually this Monty Python sketch that inspired many of the off-the-wall candidates in UK elections, some of whome have actually taken the names of silly party candidates from the sketch (e.g. Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel. A candidate stood in the real Crosby by-election in 1981 using that name). Indeed Lord David Such took inspiration from the silly party when he founded the Monster Raving Loony Party.

I don't think that anyone's mentioned that a candidate has to get a number of electors (10 at the moment) to sign a form so he (or whatever) can stand and also put down a deposit (£500 at the moment) which will be forfeited if the candidate doesn't get enough votes (5%).

A Danish comedian had a regular stunt for many years where he ran for parliament as an independent. As a political candidate you get a taxpayer financed amount per vote received and he bought beer for all the money and threw a big public party after each time he ran without getting elected. His most predominant election promise were more tailwind at bicycle lanes. He were a pretty popular comedian. One election year, where newspapers had little to write about, he got more media attention than usual and ended up getting enough votes for a seat in parliament. When he actually began in parliament he realised how much and seriously they worked and what huge consequences their work actually had on society so got a personal wake up call and took the position seriously while it lasted and never ran again after that period.

It was Monty Python that invented the Monster Raving Loony Party. The candidate was 'FlimFlamBimBam Ole Ole Biscuit Barrel.

When Roy Jenkins, former Chancellor of the Exchequer and for.er Home Secretary in Harold Wilson's Labour Governments, was standing in Glasgow Hillhead for the Social Democrat Party, the SDP (having formed it as a break-away party with three other Labour MPs), an undergraduate from Glasgow University stood against him, calling himself Woy Jenkins, having changed his name by deed poll to this name (Roy Jenkins had a slight speech impediment that meant he had difficulty pronouncing his 'r's - he called himself 'Woy Jenkins'). The student from Glasgow University was representing the SDP - the Student-Grants Doubled Party. This went on during the campaign until a killjoy judge ruled it a legally unacceptable attempt to interfere with the electoral process.

We used to have the Monster Raving Loony Party. Unfortunately, it never caught on as a political party. But we do have raving loony MPs enter Parliament under the umbrella of both the Conservative and Labour Parties.

Fear old Pythons take on our election night .Coverage can get like that with all the results coming in thick & fast . When this was made there was no internet and studio graphics were primitive . We do have some candidates and serious independent ones and if it's a close result sometimes the votes they attract can be decisive . There's a bit more of this sketch not on this clip .

we had the monster raving loony party-they were going to change us to driving on the right starting on Monday with lorries. they were funded by screaming Lord (yes a peer of the realm! and rich) Such, but when he died they mostly disappeared

No, David Sutch wasn’t a peer of the realm, Screaming Lord Sutch was his stage name. The Monster Raving Loony Party are still around, and put up 22 candidates in this election, including in my constituency - Lord Psychobilly Tractor got 250 votes.

The fashion for frivolous candidates started more recently than this sketch. In those days they were stuffy affairs where the returning officer stated only the candidates' names leaving the commentator to tell the viewers the parties. As now tv studios were full of experts and the swingometer, a very basic device used before computers.
