An explanation for Connor, first of all " 8 out of 10 cats " is a sort of night time panel game show, the title comes from an older tv commercial " 8 out of 10 cats prefer whiskers cat food " so the game show rely's on the answers to random questions given by the general puplic in percentages, then there's Countdown which is a daytime quiz show that has two contestants and is quite serious, so it was decided to make an adult funny version and to combine the two shows hence the title " 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown " and as for QI, the title simply means the answers are Quite Interesting hence QI ..

On QI each guest has a buzzer to answer questions, and the sound changes with each show to fit that weeks theme of questions. The sound is different for each guest too, and Alan Davies' buzzer that week was a sample of 'We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides' a popular Welsh song, chosen for Alan because Davies is a common Welsh surname. Davies himself is English but must have Welsh ancestry somewhere along the line. Fry imitates a Welsh accent, "It's the voice of your forefathers there. It's your ancestors there, isn't it! Welcome in the hillsides." Bill Bailey then mocks Fry's attempt at a Welsh accent, "Were they Pakistanis?", pointing out that a lot of folks poor attempts to imitate the Welsh accent often sound more like they come from India or Pakistan. Fry replies "Stop it right now!... ...mocking my Welsh accent!""

12:37 The clip regarding the breast reduction procedure in German soldiers. If I remember correctly, he explains on the show (but it's not included in this video) that soldiers who trained regularly with their rifles were starting to get a build up of fat around their pectoral muscle. This was due to the bodies natural defence against constant impact from the recoil of the rifle. So even though they were in good shape one breast was getting fatter than the other and they opted for a breast reduction. Hope that helps to clear things up a bit. I think you'd enjoy the full episodes of QI as they live up to their name of being Quite Interesting.

The breast reduction surgeries for male german soldiers are probably linked to the honorary battalion in Berlin (used for military honours when there is a state visit). They often exercise with their rifles and I read somewhere that the way the rifles rest on their chests somehow causes one-sided growth of breast tissue. Don't ask me how this is possible. 😅
@easterdeer2 жыл бұрын
That's basically the explanation I heard on the QI podcast (No Such Thing as a Fish). They end up hitting their chest a lot during an exercise or a march or something and breast tissue grows if you massage it (or hit it, I suppose) 😆

QI is a hard one to describe the rules of the game. They ask trivia questions that most people have incorrect assumptions about, so you lose points every time you state the misconceptions over whatever topic it is. Countdown, the players are on a timer to either to add, subtract, divide and multiply a selection of randomly drawn numbers, to get another randomly selected answer, or to make the longest word from randomly selected letters...8 out of 10 took on the concept and licensing to make their version, but Countdown is an afternoon 5 days a week show that's been running for decades, essentially unchanged

Countdown: A family-friendly game show that is shown in the mid-afternoon, where 2 contestants play against each other to make words out of 9 letters, chosen from a choice of vowels or consonants by one of the contestants. There are also ‘number rounds’ where 7 (I think…) numbers are selected, and then an ‘answer’ is calculated, and the contestants have 30 seconds to use those numbers (only once per number) to get as close to the ‘answer’ as possible. This is quite a well-respected and high-brow game show. 8 Out Of 10 Cats: A not-so family-friendly game show that used to be shown on a Friday night, presented by Jimmy Carr, with 2 teams of (I think) 3 contestants, who were usually comedians or other relevant celebrities. This game show focussed mostly on what had been in the news that week, and was sort of statistic-based, such as ‘25% of university students questioned admitted to only washing their _____ once every 3 months’ and the teams would get points for choosing the right answers, with some panel comedy thrown in for good measure. (Both of these were shows broadcast on Channel 4) 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown: This is what happens when you try to polish a turd. Yet it is brilliant. Take the letter and number game show mechanics of Countdown, and infect them with comedy genius that was 8 Out Of 10 Cats. That pretty much sums it up. QI: Named for a play on the common ‘IQ’ or Intelligence Quotient, a bit of an antiquated measure of someone’s relative intelligence, but instead named ‘QI’ for ‘Quite Interesting’. Another panel game show, with 4 contestants, one of which is always Alan Davies (a brilliant actor and comedian - check out Jonathon Creek if you’re a fan of both who-done-its and stage illusionists) and is hosted by Stephen Fry (since replaced by Sandi Toksvig). The main idea behind the show is that the questions are things that most people ‘know’ the answer to - or at least think they do. If you answer a question with what you think is the ‘right’ answer, and it’s an answer that the producers have foreseen as one of the likely (wrong) answers given by the contestants, then an alarm goes off and that contestant loses points. Points are award for the ‘real’ right answers, but also for answers or facts that are ‘quite interesting’. QI is 100% worth a watch and a react to if you haven’t already - and there’s a podcast that’s being going for years, hosted by the ‘QI Elves’ - or the QI researchers - that is equally as good and full of useless and useful factoids. Would I Lie To You, or WILTY for the fans, is obviously a simple game of bluffing the other team. On top of these, if you’re a fan of QI, WILTY, 8OO10CDC (8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown) then make sure to check out Taskmaster. Another pretty absurd, yet brilliant, game show hosted by the comedian Greg Davies (Head of Year Mr Gilbert off of The Inbetweeners), whereby a group of 5 celebrities, many of which have appeared on QI, 8OO10C, WILTY etc have to perform seemingly easy, yet bizarre tasks with the hope of winning a to-scale golden replica of Gregg James’ head at the end of the series.

In regards to the German soldiers having breast reductions is that some males are born with overdeveloped breast tissue so their pectoral muscles look more like female breasts due to hormonal imbalance. This may disappear after a while but surgery can also solve the problem. The soldiers probably felt embarrassed so had the surgery.

The Australian one was that the person interviewed said "30 sows and pigs" but it was reported as 30 thousand pigs", it was misheard. The German soldiers having breast reductions was because they would ceremoniously butt their rifles against their chest, causing one side of their chest to bulk up more than the other side. They would have one side of their chest growing muscle to deal with the constant impact, as a kind of defense.

He didn't say the Drink Canada Dry joke was a Canadian accent. It was a Dublin accent (quoting Brendan Behan). I doubt VERY MUCH, that the Guardsman mentioned in the anecdote was in uniform at the time of his Liaison in the park, especially considering he was at that time breaking the law, liable to a prison sentence, and would immediately be dismissed from the army, possibly serving time there too. Welcome in the hillside gag - Davies is a Welsh name, the accent was Welsh, as is the song. The joke being not to mistake it for a poor attempt at a Pakistani accent, which often happens when people attempt a Welsh accent. Breast reduction. Breast material is not muscle - yeah. Men have breasts. But... please - pause, rewind, pause rewind... Nooo. Maggie smith - he mentioned her name 3 times before you clicked it was Maggie Smith.
