After doing some research, that company Ale built their own heavy duty tractor, the Trojan 8870. Its got 700horsepower 16L inline 6 Volvo ship engine with a 6 speed allison gearbox. Its empty weight is about 72 tons and it does indeed have 8x8. Btw, the little Ford at 10:19 is a Ford Ka.

The roads around Stafford have been adapted to take these loads. In some spots the traffic lights can be removed to allow turning and along the A34 between Stafford and Stoke on Trent the roundabouts have roads cut through them to allow for the "Road Train" to go straight and on the far side of Stone the "Road Train" changes left to right side of the road to go under the arch of the train bridge as the right hand dual carriageway is lower than the left Dual carriageway by about 5 - 6 feet. You can also get onto the M6 at Stafford Junction 13/14 (one junction at each end of Stafford) this is a motorway that goes from by Rugby (central England) to Gretna Scotland (231 m / 370Km)

As far as weight goes, the heaviest load ever moved was a water desalination unit, which had a weight of more than 4,800 tons. This feat was accomplished in 2012, requiring a Saudi Arabian logistics company to use a tractor-trailer truck with 172 axles. What’s even crazier about this desalination unit is the fact that it was larger than half of a football field.

ALE stood for Abnormal Load Engineering. The did a lot of work for the then company GEC in Stafford Staffordshire UK, moving transformers worldwide. I was employed as a temp to fill in and my job was to sit in the right hand seat, the being left hand drive, and watch side mirror to make sure no one came to close or that we got to close when navigating "tight areas" or bends. They move slow and it took 6 to bring a Tractor unit and pair of Swan Necks back from unloading in Portsmouth, along motorways and some small roads back to Stafford. Usually 8.30am until 6.30 / 7.30 pm a distance of approximately 200miles. P.S. we could get up and walk around in the cab to make a cup of Tea.

And BTW... do you know why heavy transports in the US are so big and spread out compared to the same transported weight in most other parts of the world? That is because your roads and highways are so lightly built that they would get crushed if a heavy load like the ALE load rolled over them.

The First lead Truck was most likely an M series Alvis Unipower 8x8. 19 litre straight 6 with around 700 horsepower capable of 50mph unladen. The rear two are pushing but they also act as a braking unit. Even at slow speeds 475 tonnes would take some stopping!! These trucks tend to be 'Built for Purpose' machines. I think, (not 100% sure), the wheeled trailer units have 14 rows of axles that steer independently. Because the load is so heavy the entire centre section is to take the whole weight of the load that way the tractor units only need to push and pull the load.

Its a Schnabel Wagen, a German invention for extreme transports. There are also Schnabels for railways. Mammoet = mammoth. The extinct large elephant. Mammoet is formed by 3 old dutch companies: 1: Stoof Breda, heavy transport and lifting on land 2: Smit Tak, heavy transport and lifting at sea 3: Van Seumeren heavy lifting on land. But this is a strange world were one company take over the other and then sell parts of it, so there are a lot more companies involved like ALE you see on this video. The dutch heavy lifting and transport specialists started in may 1807 by the 25 years old Jan Goedkoop who bought a 140 metric ton ship for heavy cargo. In the early days of the industrial revolution he saw the need of heavy transport and lifting, especially on sea. He was the first on the world who got into heavy sea tugs. (note: heavy sea tugs at the day was a mere bathtub with a diesel engine compare what we call sea tugs today)

It seems that the tractors were build by FAUN, a German manufacturer for special machinery, like truck cranes, road sweepers, tractors ect. If you enjoy watching such special transports, search for videos of the Dutch company Mammoet. They are probably the world leader in special transports, on roads as well as on sea. The haul everything, no matter how big or heavy. And most times it works well.... :)

The trucks were a mixture of EX military tank transporters (built by Alvis Unipower) in Britain and self built trucks built in house by ALE themselves. The FAUN's used by ALE are the smaller bonneted truck like the one in the rear in this video. The Unipower trucks are not built by Faun and are not German. ALE'S trojan 8870 trucks were built by themselves in Britain at Hixon, Staffordshire, England.

Just imagine, you don't just call a tow truck, if problems strike :D I used to live close to a mega-sized windmill factory in Denmark (Vestas), and quite often, they had to deliver wings that would require two sets of trucks to transport (front crew and rear crew). They would cross round abouts, driving around but the wings would extend all the way across the roundabout, that was fun to see :)

The tractor unit is "semi Automatic" with the gear lever being about 6 inches high and is just push forward to go up a gear and back to go down a gear. The brake pedal is about 12 inches by 6 inches and can fit both feet at once. There are 16 axels to each trailer, each axel can be raised or lowered on each side of the trailer to get over any "Humps "that can to be "bounced over, Ps not road kill but removed light fitting. The whole "Train" Is "Tractor Unit" attached to "Turntable trailer", which have the "Swan Necks" (the curved parts) down to the "Beams" that carry the Transformer, the back to "Swan Necks", "Turntable trailer" and finally the pushing "Tractor units." The small cabins on the multi wheeled trailers are actually steering booths should the need arise these can be controlled separately, The number of Police Outriders depends on the road/area they are going through and can be between 4 and 8 and how many junctions need to temporally closed. Sorry it took 3 posts to answer your questions

For the trailer: you have at least adjustable height for the load (those cylinders are visible on the pivot points), and often sideways movement too depending on the vehicle. The wheels of the chassis are individually adjustable in height and can be steered individually or in groups. The real party trick is that on some of these the center section is designed to be converted into a railway vehicle. This means that they drive it to a special loading area where the cradle is lowered on the ground and the wheels are replaced by two special railway cars

Yeah and there are usually planned and measured routes for these convoys on the street network. So they know al ready where to drive and how large items fit through... Except some once in lifetime delivery locations where you have to measure and count how and where to go to meet the location. And since there so many wheels the stress and strain per square inch is about the same as normal lorries.

I grew up in that part of the world, would regularly see these things being moved. These movements happen pretty regularly on the Stafford to Congleton route (about 35 miles), if memory serves, enough that much of the road infrastructure is built specifically to help them. I can't remember why they go to Congleton specifically, there's no power station there, it could be that they're put on a train to Manchester or Liverpool to be shipped around the world.

I love your enthusiasm for these things, the trick with clearing the border wall is that the load cradle can be hydraulic lifted and lowered. The name Mammoet is pronounced as Mamut in English and means Mammoth. Mammoet is active world wide, even in North America now, bringing with them al the modern European equipment like these modular platform trailers with all steerable and adjustable axles and self propelled modular transporters (SPMT). The modular platforms can be coupled together in any configuration needed for the task, up to several thousands of tonnes capacity. Biggest manufacturer of these heavy load trailers is Scheuerle from Germany, but others like Goldhofer of Germany and Cometo of Italy build these too, this kind of modular trailers and SPMTs are still only manufactured in Europe.

I have seen such transports in Germany where they even pulled down whole traffic lights, rail guards and anything else that's in the way. Sometimes available space is only millimeters too short. Money is of no concern in this matter.

@@kjetilblestrud9549 One of the transports went wrong in the hairpin at 1:40 in that video. I remember it was all over the news with pictures of the trailer tipped over on its side.

Yesterday passed a 4 wide loads going up Gt Northern hwy from Perth. 8.5 metre (30ft) wide dump trucks on the trailers with a pusher semi behind each one. Pretty much had to head into the bush to get out of the way. Going up north to the mines. Police escorts and pilot vehicles all over the place. A lot of jibber jabber on the two way radio

It's a record breaking heavy lift transport, the previous one was a 370 tons transport of a gasturbine ( made by Alstom already ) in 2009. 13:00 They had to remove a traffic direction signal or an indicator panel, sometimes it requires removing a larger piece of asphalt than expected. It's not a roadkill.

we had a few large scale transport operations in the past when we had the big industries over here in town... a few got closed down in the past so they stopped these transports but there were pump housing transports with 6m wide housings on public roads where I could take a closer look at one directly by walking under the side of the load as I got the okay from the transport manager on the company parking grounds was insane to watch that beast take off and then drive past me on the road (I even followed a bit on the Autobahn before turning around at the truckstop and drove back home) and let Felbermayr do their transport without me spectating any longer a few months later there was a second transport that was less lucky... as they had to make a larger turn and then during the drive like 500m away from the spot where it started a pin had snapped... just that it was a hard steel pin with 6 inch diamenter that bascially made the thing get stuck in a turn... they had to work for almost 2 days to get the broken thing fixed (because of all the overhead lights on the roads that had to be taken down before they could use cranes to remove some load from the broken part) was spectacular but stressy and expensive at the same time... and this time it was not Felbermayr driving but a different company where their dolly failed... but the shipper had to pay the bill

A L E - Abnormal Load Engineering They come through my town every so often as I live near to the A34 which is their main route

Just a thought. Its 475 tonnes (metric). Converted into US, 523 tons. I've watched all the videos of ALE, who are a heavy haulage contractor. Very impressive. Boys and their toys😅😅. It's a shame now, as the company sold off to a Dutch firm. The tractors, I think, are German. Not quite as fast as BMWs😂😂. One oneor two videos, they come with mobile tyres (as this video), local Council to cut some major branches from trees, and a wagon to lay down planks for the vehicle to go onto kerbs. The roundabouts (not all), are made to open up for abnormal loads to pass through. The A34 road is a main arterial road, and are usually fairly staight. Where you say roadkill. Its not, there are bollards on the route, and these are taken out by the local Council for the load to move through the towns. Where you are querying the load and both hydraulic systems, they also lift and lower to either go over obstacles or under low bridges. In this video, you didn't show what happened when one of the wheels burst and they had to change it. I must admit, I take my hat off to these people

What you probably didn't notice when they just scraped over the top of the low wall, was that they also went around a sign pole mounted on the top of the wall.
