Something that's very important to note is that every country makes their top 10 and gives their top 10 points. If a country is not in the top 10, it doesn't receive any points. So a country can be on everyone's 11th or 15th spot but receive no points at all and come in last. There's usually about 25 entries in the final so sometimes countries are just unlucky and don't receive a lot of points because of this.

If you look at the bottom, you can see how many participants there were each year. Before the fall of the Eastern Block, there were manageable amount of countries that participated. So every country that wanted to compete was automatically in the Eurovision finals. Now there's close to 50 countries each year that want to compete. And because that is too much to broadcast during one evening, the countries are divided into 2 groups a-25+ songs. So there's usually semi-finals on Tuesday and Thursday, and then the Grand Finale on Saturday. Around half of the songs from each semi-final get into the finals and the rest are known as "didn't qualify". The rules for the semi-finals are that you and the jury of your country can only vote during the semi-final your country participates in. Not the other semi-final. You can't vote on the song from your country. Everyone can vote in the finale, but again, you can't vote on your country. The semi-finals are divided rather smart, so that the cultural blocks that like each other's songs (some people claim it's political, but I say its cultural) get split between the semi-finals - so that they can't get too much support from each other. Each part is several hours long. Like from 8 to midnight. There is five countries, known as "The Big Five" who contribute the most, monetarily, to the competition. They, and the winner of the previous year qualify automatically to the finals. The tradition is that each semi-finals show a short clip of 3 of the songs. The clips are even shorter than what you were able to see. Some people believe that it's an (unfair) advantage. But to me it is disadvantage. While the official Eurovision KZbin channel has the songs available to view as soon as a country officially releases the song to the competition, there are some (like me) who avoid watching anything before the competition. Not being able to see the song before the finale makes it more difficult to decide on what you think of it - at least to me. I also try to avoid knowing who the favorites are before the competition. But the live commentators (each country has one) tend to speak of it anyway during the competition. One last thing that I forgot to say. The countries now that are the "loosers" are countries that actually have qualified to the finals. So it's kind of not fair to say they came last. There's around 20+ countries that came last. The last one came next to last ;)

In the early years it was only judges, but televoting was first introduced at the Eurovision Song Contest 1997. Most years it was 50-50. Some years were only televoting (call,text,app)

Why am I obsessed with Finland in 1969? It such an "of its time" song in the best way! It deserved better. So did Germany in 2015 and 2023. 2002 had slightly odd vocals but it slaps still. 2008 was cute and fun too.

some answers to your questions: 2:00 no second last is nothing special, it just means that was the country that finished second to last. 3:55 there are tiebreakers if countries finished on the same amount of points but they didn't have them in the earlier years In the more recent years the bigger countries who make a significant financial contribution to the contest (Germany, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, France) as well as the hosting country get automatic qualification to the grand final which means it is much more likely for them to come last. In fact, the last time that the last place wasn't an automatic qualifier was 2013.

Fun fact about 2003: They were super duper off key and said it was because their in-ear monitors are bad. Even so, the song sucked. Some Brits were offended by this and claimed that, instead of their song being bad (the real answer), it was "political voting" because other European nations were angry the UK joined the war in Iraq. Not kidding!

@bigkevreacts The 1974 Portuguese Song was the Starting-Song for a Millitary-Coup in Portugal, that overthrew the Fascist Estado Novo Regime after it governed the Country dictatorally for 48 years (1926 - 1974). This Event became known as the Carnation Revolution, which reestablished Democracy in Portugal. These were overseas colonies of Portugal before the Carnation Revolution, and the Estado Novo regime fought the independence movement of these countries most brutally. The bloody Portuguese Colonial War ended with this Carnation Revolution.
