Londoners do use the double decker buses every day. I recommend avoiding travelling during rush hours, if you can as a tourist, as they get very busy with people commuting to work.

The no. 74 bus (to Putney from Orchard Street outside Selfridges and across from Marks and Spencer - both good for shopping) will give you an interesting journey, without paying a big fee - only the standard fare (have an oyster card!).

And if you do use the bus (or the tube) in rush hours, be prepared to be crushed - heads in armpits are normal and there won't be any seats. Also, commuters really hate tourists as they stop at the top/bottom of stairs/escalators and gaze around instead of moving, and makes them late! Glad I'm not in that rat race anymore!

Yes Greenwich, London is the epicentre for time all over the world. There is a Public Gallery in the House of Commons, where the public can watch the going’s on in the House of Commons. Kensington Palace contains the Offices and is the London residence of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Also contains the offices of The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

Battersea Power Station in London is a de-commissioned Power station that became the cover of Pink Floyd's album "Animals". The Album designers launched a tethered Giant inflatable pig that was photo'd between the two Chimneys but it broke free of its moorings and was reported by Airline pilots as a Giant Pig flying over London. The Station itself has now recently re-opened as a massive shopping mall but retaining many of the features such as the dynamo's as historical features. You can also take an elevator ride up the Right hand chimney (as seen from the front of the building) to an observation platform at the top. There is a marvellous short video made by two American Sightseers on this new addition to London's best places to visit. It's on You Tube.

Pretty amusing when she referred to the age of 'The Mousetrap', which I saw at 15 with my parents. Then I went again with a friend, to the same theatre, and at the end, as we moved past two ladies in the same row of seats, I asked them, did you enjoy that? We had a little chat, and I made them gasp and shoot their eyebrows up when I said I'd first seen it 50 years ago..... Robert, UK.

I walk or drive across the prime meridian most days, as it runs through the middle of my Cambridgeshire village and we have a commemorative plaque on one of our more modern 18th century buildings, which was put there for the millenium (that's a marker not dental plaque). If I stand to the west of it I have to carry leeks and to the east a string of onions. Remember that when you come over Tyler, it's compulsory!

The prime meridian runs about a half-mile from my house. (I often cross it) In the year 2000 markers were placed on the line at just about every road it crosses so there are lots of places you can straddle it. Somehow it's still not as romantic as the original marker at Greenwich.

For last minute theatre tickets, obviously the newer/more popular shows may sell out, but usually there is a pretty decent choice of last minute discount tickets as the Theatres would rather sell tickets cheap thean not fill the seats at all. If you want to see a specific show then book well in advance, but if you just have a spare evening and are flexible on what you see, then you can get some really cheap deals.

The (now) Prince and Princess of Wales no longer live at Kensington Palace and in fact they moved out before the Queen passed away. They now live in a relatively modest house in the outer grounds of Windsor Castle. They did very much live at Kensington for several years BUT the Kensington Palace site is split in two, with one side being the Royal Household which is private and the other being part of "Historic Royal Palaces", which is open to the public. You don't get to see Prince William's living room!

My top tip for London or any city, is to do some geocaching while you're there. A good proportion of city geocaches are at sites of local history or interest. Blue plaques are everywhere, double decker buses are everywhere (though not all are red, but then the iconic old red buses are no longer used in London either, due to their age), international food is everywhere (I can think of Chinese, Indian, Korean, Mexican, Portuguese, American, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Polish, persian, and Ethiopian within easy distance of me, and I'm in the stix in Yorkshire). Oh, and Kensington Palace - it's split up into apartments - Princess Diana lived there, Kate and William did live there. But don't be surprised that there are tours - you can visit Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle. And i think possibly Balmoral in Scotland if I remember right.

The Prime Meridian in London is unique because it's at 0 longitude and 0 latitude. It was chosen as the place where time starts too. The Royal Observatory is in Greenwich, London which is where Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) comes from and it's what begins the timezones of the world and every other country's time is set by GMT time. Also as a Londoner born and raised, I do go there just to hang out where time begins 😂 most Londoners don't to be fair though.

Parliament offers several different tours but beware, you will be denied entry if you arrive wearing a suit of armour - that is forbidden under the 1313 Parliament Act. Contrary to popular belief, however, it is not illegal to die in Parliament - that idea was based upon a misinterpretation of a law which in any case has been overridden by the Coroners Act 1988 (giving the coroner of the Queen's household jurisdiction over a death in a royal palace).

@johnm8224
@johnm8224 Жыл бұрын
Whilst the security requirements have been understandably ramped-up in recent decades, and the PRACTICAL arrangements have become a little more onerous, it is a fundamentally-held principle of British Democracy that it should be transparent and open, and (technically) ANY citizen is entitled to observe it in action. In this regard, the House of Commons has what is known as "The Strangers' Gallery" ['Strangers' in this context meaning 'Strangers to the House', or those that are not Members or officials there ex-officio], and any citizen is, theoretically, entitled to attend to observe, provided they do not interfere. In practice, since there are actually a very limited number of seats in the gallery, this is almost always at the invitation of an MP, and does tend to be used as a bit of a "treat" for a Member's constituents who are active in the same political party. The same principle of openness and transparency applies to the Justice System, and any citizen is theoretically entitled to observe any hearing, trial, or other process in a Court of Law or similar, except where practical concerns make this inappropriate (say where matters of National Security are under discussion), and again so long as they do not interfere unless called upon.

You are right that technically you can straddle the Prime Meridian at any point on the vertical line - but Greenwich (in London) was specifically chosen as the point at which the line was set, as it is the site of the Royal Observaory, where a lot of scientific research into longitude and latitude took place. You can tour various places where members of the Royal Family live- but obviouly you don't get to see their private apartments. As the caption said on the video, The Prince and Princess of Wales and their family now live at Windsor, close to Windsor Castle, rather than Kensington.

That US construction is very impressive, a stunning piece of architecture but not as big as you would think. Both St. Pauls & Westminster palace are taller. The latter is four times bigger a building than the US capitol building. The Queen Elizabeth tower (big ben) & the top of the dome of St. Paul's are much taller in height than the top of the dome of the US capitol & even taller than the statue of Liberty. This isn't an 'ours is bigger than yours' claim, i was surprised to learn that the US capitol building is not as big as we might think & our famous buildings are perhaps much bigger than we might think they are. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

She is correct to say BUY tickets from the BOX office, its far cheaper than online. I know this as I have spoken to many theatre managers, they sell them early at 8 am til 12 pm. So go early. Best seats are the Royal circle, not Royal boxes. This is the upper chamber of seating that has the best views and sound quality.

Fun fact. Until 1998, an MP could request that members of the public be removed from the Public Gallery of the House of Commons - so that debate continue in private - by calling out "I spy strangers!" In 1875 an MP used the procedure to have the Prince of Wales removed from the Gallery, making the point that, by custom, the monarchy has no right to enter the House of Commons. (The last monarch who did was Charles I. It ended badly.)

That point is also made by the door being shut so that Black Rod has to knock in order to be allowed in to invite the MPs to attend the House of Lords for the King's Speech.

Remember when I worked abroad in the 1980s with lots of Americans, they were amazed that I lived 35 miles from the centre of London, but never went there. You can watch Parliamentary debates from the Public Galleries at the House of Commons and Lords.

@@B-A-L I grew up in inner London (Battersea), but now live 20 miles south of Central London. A weekend day return on the train from where I live is only £11, well worth it in my opinion!

I was put off London when I was job hunting in the late 1970s. When it was still dirty, polluted and very down at heel. Very much as shown in the TV series Minder. The rail stations and underground were disgusting. After a trip to London I always had sinus pain and sneezed out a load of back crud when I blew my nose.

I'm a huge fan of shopping in the Japanese food center and eating in China Town both In London. Like Newyork there are theatre ticket booths around London where you can buy tickets for the theatre for the same day. You can choose what you want to see from a list of available theatre productions. Yes some of the Royals live in Kensington palace but you can't tour round their private apartments only the parts that are open to the public.

My sister and I spent many happy weekends during our school holidays, buying a 'day-return' train ticket to London, and getting the cheap tickets to a theatre show. .We never knew until the day what show we would get in to see, but managed to see some of the BIG musicals! ...and The Mousetrap! ... oh, and yes indeed, the 'locals' do use the red double-deckers!

Blue plaques are on buildings right across the country. You can virtually go to any city, town or village and if someone famous once lived in or visited a building then it will have a blue plaque on the wall outside telling you who the person was and what date they were at that location. It is not a London exclusive thing.
