I support Hawthorn. I have followed them since I was a little kid. They are the most successful team since 1960 having won Championships in every decade since. They had a threepeat in 2013, 14, 15. They are called The Hawks and have brown and gold uniforms. We call the tops they wear jerseys. Sydney and Richmond have dominated in recent years. Some players you might want to check out are Buddy Franklin and Cyril Rioli. Also there is one American playing in the league, Mason Cox who plays for Collingwood(Magpies)

whats amazing is that there are a handful of players that can kick goals from inside the center square, roughly 85 meters or 93 yards, and still clear the goal posts above head height. Remember going to an old special Ted Whitten match, full of retired afl players for an exhibition match, and one of them marked the ball in the center square and was about to pass in on when he suddenly thought "why the hell not" and decided to take a kick for goal from where he was. The Anthony Rocca brother in his youth was one of the very few players who could kick for goal from the center line which is 92.5 meters or 101 yards. He tried his luck and sure enough he could still kick a high goal from where he was, some 15 years after retirement.

The game started in 1856 to keep cricketers fit during winter so it's one of the first ball games in history so with some of the rules 1) When running with the ball you have to bounce the ball within 16 yards or it's a turnover. 2) Each quarter can go as long as 30 minutes or more so a game could last over 2 hours. 3) 5 minutes breaks between quarter time and 3 quarter time and at half time 20 minutes break and a score could be 20x6 +10x1 =130 or 18x6 + 18x1 =126 as an example this years Grand Final just had over 100,000 people attend Fixture starts around mid March and Grand Final is usually played last Saturday in September just finished a month ago. A normal kick would be around 50 Meters and as long as 75 meters you can look up the conversion between have a look at a replay but not this years GF wasn't great for Sydney hope you have some fun watching a game

AFL was developed in the 1850's as a way to keep cricket players fit during the winter. That has several implications - firstly explains the athleticism and variety of skills needed to play the game. Secondly, it is played on cricket grounds, and thirdly, AFL is played when cricket is off-season, and cricket is played when AFL is off-season. These days they are not normally also professional cricket players and the games are independent codes linked by both playing on large cricket ovals.

Some Grand Finals have attracted upwards of 100,000 spectators; and are watched by a global audience of a couple million viewers. Currently, AFL is played by teams from Victoria(10 teams), and two teams each from South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland; the future competition could be restructured to accommodate teams from Tasmania and Northern Territory. Most games(played weekly during the winter) last over two and a half hours(This includes breaks between the quarters). The average attendance per weekly game is around 31,000 for each of the games, that is 270,000 plus per week; that is in excess of 6 million plus spectators over the 22 minor rounds, with the average attendance for the minor finals of 77,000 plus. Each of the states and territory have there own league competitions, plus suburban and country competitions. The competition proper, usually starts March/April and finishes September/October.

Grand Final is always in September. You can watch a game on KZbin. It is fast and it is fun. It is also the first football before you had football. It was taken from an Aboriginal game and used to keep Cricket player’s fit in the off season or kill them. That is why the Melbourne Cricket ground is so important in this game, it is tradition. Nothing beats being at the MCG for a game and this year broke the record with over 105,000 people at the game. These are all elite athlete’s that grew up playing to be good enough. They have to run up to 20 kilometre’s a game while keeping all skills. If a player goes down the game doesn’t stop. Unless he or she is unconscious or in the line of play. My team has the only American player, Mason Cox and he signed up before he ever saw a game. Then he spent 4 years waiting to be allowed to play first grade and he was still terrible. Fans from his club wanted him sent home but I love that he never gave up. He got it and when he played in a Semi Final game they flew his parents out to watch. They looked confused but happy and a little scared when the crowd roared, they are harmless. He plays for the Collingwood Magpies or we call them the Pies, he is our American Pie. Everyone knows when he has the ball at first because the crowd chants USA. He looked a bit odd at the end of this year, I think he was wearing prescription goggles to play. You need to watch Buddy Franklin score his 1,000th goal and see what happens. They have made it too hard for anyone to do that again. Or the top 50 marks. Or Eddie Betts, he is a smaller player but he was magic getting in and under the taller player’s and away with the ball. They usually play mid field but Eddie could fly high too and score from any direction. He is the one player that can get me to watch any team he played for, he is now retired. Have fun and thank you.

Sorry Meags, the season is over. Usually late March to September, which is Spring down here. The grand final is usually the last weekend in September. This year was not a close contest, with Geelong running away with the game early. Sydney Swans won a 1-point game the week before to make the grand final, so they were clearly tired and had nothing left in the tank for the real thing. Still worth watching some highlight reels - the AFL publishes them on KZbin and you have no copyright worries with those once published. Suggest you watch 'Mason Cox: Don't believe in never' - an American kid out of college who came to Australia to play in the AFL. It resonates pretty hard with our US friends. As a college BB player you will completely understand this and it will hit very close to home I am sure. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnO1oqSaarublcU and then watch the Grand Final highlights kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKXXh5idmdd7fNE Personally I am a Carlton supporter but I encourage you to learn about all the teams, one will effectively pick you. It could be the players, the style that they play, or even just the logo, mascot, location or ethos of the club. Something will speak to you - and that's your team. Some NFL teams are friendly with certain AFL clubs. The other thing that you need to know is that the Aussie punters in the NFL are not Rugby players like most people in the States understand. They are virtually all AFL players or background, with the likes of Sav and Anthony Rocca at the Eagles from 2007 both being former AFL players from Collingwood as an example. Any former Rugby Union or Rugby League players are not punters but I bet there will be one that I forgot that will prove me wrong. They are usually more Tight Ends or Defensive Ends.

Gotta remember this is an American explaining the game to make it easier for yanks to understand, there’s a lot of things here that annoys us Aussies like talking in yards not meters, players kick to teammates alot further than 50 yards (45 meters) you’ll see accurate kicks as long as 80 yards pretty frequently, you don’t have to bounce the ball at 16 yards just gotta do it before 16 yards the umpires call this by steps so if they believe the player has taken more than 15 steps without bouncing it’s a turnover Grand finals are usually 100,000 people not 90,000, the big 4 teams Carlton Collingwood Essendon and Richmond will often get 90,000 at regular season games when they play each other The extra time usually exceeds 10 extra minutes, the clock stops at every stoppage, high scoring games will often be 32-35 minute quarters They didn’t explain the final score very well either, it’s saying Collingwood scored 20 goals and 10 behinds which equals 130 points
@OldFossil2 жыл бұрын

Love your enthusiasm mate. Crowds average around 45,000, but a couple of top teams playing can get anything up to about 90,000 people. The grand final is rarely only 90,000, it’s always closer to 100,000. This season’s Grand Final in September attracted 100,025 fans. When they all scream together you would not believe how electric the atmosphere is. At the Grand Final or any other game, parents take their kids because those crowds are one big happy family, and there is only the odd idiot because everybody is there to enjoy the game. It’s more than a game, it’s a way of life for Australians and very much the glue that holds the community together. NRL, (rugby) struggles to get over 15,000 fans to their match of the day. Soccer is even less. The score line of 20-10-130 means 20 goals x 6 points each = 120 pts + 10 behinds (points) = 130 total points. You can have less goals than the other team, but more total points which is the winner. (Example) Team A, 14-8-92 (team A wins with more total points, less goals) Team B, 15-1-91 (remember the first figure is goals multiplied by six points each) When you take a mark (catch) you can play on, (keep going) or stop on the spot and take a free kick where the opposition is not allowed to touch you. The umpire will blow his whistle every time someone marks the ball, but if the player does not stop and plays on, the umpire will call, “play on.” Various free kicks. If the umpire sees a free kick should be given for an infringement, but a teammate plays on, the umpire will call, “advantage,” and let him keep going. This keeps the game flowing rather than hindering the team by bringing the ball back for the free kick. Goals. The 50 meter arc is only a guide. Players can kick for goal from any part of the ground. If the ball is touched by any player of either team from when it leaves the boot and before crossing the goal line, it becomes one point. (If the goal umpire is in doubt, they will call for a score review, which involves a slow motion video replay.) After each goal the ball is brought back to the centre of the ground and contested by two ruckmen as you saw. All players must resume their original positions at that time. Behinds. (Points) The square marked on the ground in front of the goals is where the fullback kicks the ball back into play after a behind is scored. Handball. Ball held in one hand and punched with a closed fist with the other. Handball can be given to a teammate from any direction. Throwing the ball is illegal, and will result in a free kick given to the opposition. 16 yards is 15 m in Australia. We are annoyed about this explanation. What they should have said is that you have to bounce the ball any time “BEFORE” 15 mtrs. Most players bounce after a few steps to avoid going beyond 15 m, which would see a free kick given to the other team. These guys are super athletes, who run flat out for up to 15 km per game, whilst being harassed, bumped, and tackled. Each quarter with extra time runs for about 30 minutes, which means they’re running around for two hours apart from breaks between the quarters. A free kick is given against a player who kicks the ball over the boundary line on the full, or purposely kicks it towards the boundary line. Otherwise if the ball runs over the line during play, a boundary umpire tosses the ball back in over his head. Similar to the centre bounce start, two tall players called ruckmen jostle and try to hit the ball to one of their own players. This allows for a neutral contest. There are too many ways free kicks can be given to mention here. Best to search the Internet for books/videos on the rules/laws of AFL. That oval ball has a mind of it’s own and won’t bounce properly unless you know what you’re doing. However considering that most Australian babies have a football in their hands before they can walk, they have plenty of time to grow up practising it. Junior clubs are all over the country, and there are kids of all ages that bounce the ball perfectly, as well as mastering the other skills. The top team at the end of the regular season is called the “minor premier.” But we don’t care about that really, it’s those finals and who wins the grand final that we go nuts about. There are two parts to the final eight, we’ll call them the first four and the second four. Teams play-off in the first four and get a second chance if they lose, they then play the winners of the games in the second four and the losers of the second four are eliminated. If you search around, you will find a broadcast of AFL games in America, the UK and other places. The season is now over and will start a new season in April 2023. Aussie rules is played as an amateur sport in many countries in the world, If you look it up you’ll find AFL leagues in your area. Because it’s amateur it’s nowhere near as brutal as our game, and it’s more a social type game played for fun with beers and barbecue afterwards. In America they have the USAFL, which comprises 40 different leagues including a women’s league. Beginning in 1858 our game was codified before any of the other sports, in other words we started it so we didn’t copy other sports, it was the other way around. It was actually invented to keep cricket players fit during the off-season. It’s debatable that some aspects of the game were taken from the aboriginal game known as Marn Grook, where aboriginal people have been kicking a pig skin around for centuries. Welcome to the most exciting game on the planet. Cheers.

Good summary. No one knows what half the free kicks are given for. eg none of my teams ( Melbourne FC aka Demons) free kicks given against were correct. lol. AFL season starts mid March and Grand Final is held on the last Saturday in September.

@@phillipnightingall5039 Thanks. I know it’s confusing but many years ago my father was an umpire. He said that whether you’re on the fence, in the stands or even watching on TV, people miss the little things that the umpires see so close up. He also agreed that mistakes are made, but he said they are a lot less than what people think. I get cranky about frees I don’t agree with either. One of my pet hates regarding umpires decisions, Is the fans that complain bitterly about a free kick that affects their team in the dying minute. That I believe is silly because during the course of the game there are free kicks wrongly called for both sides. Fans only notice them in the last minute or so, whereas the result could’ve gone against them at other times during the game.

Anyone from Australia will tell you that this sport is the greatest thing to have ever existed (except maybe some Rugby and Soccer fans 🤭). It’s the result of mixing the best parts of American Football, Soccer, Rugby, Basketball and Gaelic Football and surprisingly works really well. Unfortunately the season just ended but it’ll be back in March. It’s got to be one of the best sports to watch in person because you get to see the whole field (quite a bit of stuff happens off camera, especially formations and player movement) and get to soak up the atmosphere of being there in person so if you have the chance to come to Australia, come to a game because you’ll absolutely love it. Recently, one of the greatest full forwards (positioned directly in front of goal in the goal square) named Lance “Buddy” Franklin kicked his 1000th total career goal in Sydney in front of an almost sold out Sydney Cricket Ground of 40,000+ where all the supporters jumped the fence mid game to storm the field. I personally was in the first row exactly behind the goals that he kicked at and was one of the first people to run up to Buddy among the other tens of thousands of fans. It was truly an amazing moment in Australian Football history that I reckon you would enjoy reacting to. It’s something that is probably never going to happen again in the sport so it was a special occasion. If you have any enquires about the sport, please feel free to ask. I’ve loved the sport ever since I took my first breath so I can answer your questions if you have any. I support the Hawthorn Football Club (the gold and brown stripes team) who are the New England Patriots of the AFL (won four Grand Finals in 2008 and from 2013-2015 but are rebuilding). A lot of foreigners that I’ve seen support the Sydney Swans since they’re the Sydney based team which isn’t a bad choice since they made the Grand Final this year (unfortunately got belted it in though 😅). Choose whatever floats your boat I guess 😊

Its not a mixture of Rugby, soccer, NFL, and basketball, it was first played in 1858 long before any of those other sports existed. Had all the basic aspects of the game in place at that time.

AFL season is March to September; the Grand Final is normally played on the last Saturday in September, so you have missed that this year. However, the women's competition, the AFLW is on right now. They are about to start the finals this weekend, so you might be able to catch some games. Not sure why they say the Grand Final attendance is "90,000+", since it is actually 100,000.
@themeagler2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting and letting me know 😁. What is the average attendance for women’s matches?
@butlercorp Жыл бұрын
@@themeagler just did a quick search and the average crowd size was 2571. In saying that, the season is significantly shorter than the men’s competition, and the skill level and scoring isn’t the best. Give it time when more girls start playing and when they become adults, those factors will also improve.

From the reaction videos I've seen you Americans love our game and rightly so the season is over for the year. AFL is played by kids as young as 7 or 8 we have a fast growing for women's game (same rules) the WAFL some Ex-pats have started a league and one school district in California had the game. Its fast without all the stops and starts that NFL has it's hard and high scoring and the USA would go nuts if the game was given a chance to see and play it. As a sport its older than rugby that means its older than gridiron because your football evolved from rugby its older than football (soccer for you guys) it is the oldest codified football game in the world. I come from 1 of the 2 states that AFL isn't the premier winter sport but I'm a convert I'm a GWS giants fan BTW. Enjoy and maybe catch you at a game.
