@@helensmusings thank you so much. I am working hard not just to get kids to become interested in science, but am pushing to try to get more women into STEM, as there are not enough women taking up science, and that begins in my lab. As a career changer, I think I put more effort in, especially as I left school with very little due to bullying. Thirty years later, I have a degree, a teaching degree, and am doing my hardest to show young people that you can come from a council estate and STILL succeed, if you put your mind to it ❤

The smoking is normal in UK schools, there was the smoking corner where students notoriously smoked and the teacher's knew but most didn't do much about it unless it was done right in front of them. A lot of the episodes are quite moving and I empathise with most of the kids, but not bullies. I don't care what you're going through, or the experiences you have had there is NEVER an excuse to bully someone. I plan to tell my kids (if I have them) "You can be anything you want to be. I will love you exactly the same no matter what your sexuality, gender identity or beliefs and I will support you through absolutely anything, any problems, issues or worries you have...but if I EVER catch you bullying anybody I will fucking disown you"

So I’m sure you’ve similar things in the states but the head teacher brought in to schools like these are called “Super heads”…meaning they’re meant to be the best of the best who can turn failing schools round before the schools get closed…all these schools are facing closure. There was/is a big issue with the Manchester version of this…that head teacher is facing legal issues, but for the most part, aye. These schools need these super heads. I should know, I got kicked out & passed about enough of them to know. Had they had these kinds of teachers back when I was in school, I might not have been as bad as I was.

We don't have middle schools in the UK, we have primary school (year 1 to 7 - 5 year old to 12 year old) and secondary school (year 8 to 11 - 13 year old to 16 year old), you can legally leave school at the end of year 11 or at the age of 16, whichever comes first. Some folks can choose to stay on for another year or two to learn 'higher' subjects in preparation for university, but both of these years are entirely voluntary. Those that leave school at 16 with no plan to go on to further education would be our equivalent of what the US call 'dropouts'.
@annieridesagain38673 жыл бұрын
You can't legally leave school at 16 anymore in the Uk . If you don't do A levels for university entry then you have to do a 2 year 16 -18 year old college course, which can be an apprenticeship, but they all lead to a diploma. This is the reason why all students now need to get at least 5 GCSEs at age 16, which is the minimum requirement expected of them.

Oh also on your point of “I never wore makeup in school” I bet you got to wear your own clothes though. Half the issue with school uniforms over here is you have no outlet to express your identity, so makeup & hair become the thing. Though most schools try & quash it I think it’s BS. Let kids have bad makeup in high school…it teaches them for when they’re grown how to do it right. After all, how many of us as adults wear makeup to work? A lot.

Northern England has a very large Pakistani population. When the industrial revolution began in England, Yorkshire became the centre of the fabric industry, in Britain's post-war economic boom a lot of Pakistani immigrants were brought by the government to fill jobs in the fabric trade but the industry eventually collapsed and caused a lot of poverty. Within a very short period completely british towns were now half Pakistani, Muslim, and often with no English. Both sides were poor and proud of their identities. The British side have had their native community completely changed without getting a vote on it, and generations of Pakistani descendents born in the UK are caught between the two cultures.

I'm in my fifties and went to school in West Yorkshire. I've only seen one episode of this series because I was embarrassed and annoyed at the way the kids spoke and behaved towards other pupils and teachers. When I was at school, if I'd spoke to teachers in that fashion, my mum would've knocked my head off. Going to see the headmaster/headmistress was a fate worse than death and you very rarely had parents being called into school, I never even had a detention, it was only for the worst of students. I could forgive the amount of makeup the girls wear, if was applied correctly, but considering that they have tutorials galore on KZbin at their disposal, their efforts were appalling, and am surprised that parents let them leave the house looking like that. Having said that, I applaud the teachers for turning up day in, day out to try and guide these kids into having some sort of a future, because God knows, their parents aren't up to the job. 🤦♀️🤷♀️🙆♀️

This is at least ten years old before youtube really took off it takes time to learn to do make up even with videos XD They do look funny

@@cubbykovu8955 I beg to differ, it was filmed in 2013, KZbin was established 2005. They were sat at computers and most appeared to have mobile phones, and the young lady with black hair, can't remember her name didn't learn about eyebrows and eyebrow templates from word of mouth, I'll bet. And black nail polish is also a realtively new concept, only previously worn by goths, until the advent of KZbin influencers. I may be an oldie, but I am aware of trends. My daughter, who does predate KZbin, never would've considered going to school caked in makeup, nor would I or her school have let her.

The main difference in schools these days is half the parents would sooner take the side of immature children than teachers. They seem to think that teachers regularly (an important word there) make stuff up just to be mean to students. This means discipline breaks down as young people rapidly learn that they can always go crying to parents who will undermine the school. It's atrocious and the sad thing is it's the kids who suffer.

It has nothing to do with having no father around. My own father died when I was 3, my mother had to be both mother and father. It`s down to bad parenting.

Kamrrem seems like he has a lot of energy. I would have really recommended martial arts for him at that point. Good for energy and discipline and really fun.

Can anyone enlighten me on why the parent for Karreem (sp?) wasn't called in earlier? 5 complaints and 73 visits before parent interaction and even then it's the last straw. This is a legitimate question. I don't know how the system works there.

Different schools have different systems. It seems like Thornhill was trying different methods under a new Headteacher and wasn't harsh enough with some pupils. Just one violent incident would get you on suspension at my school, and you'd come back "On report" (Regular reporting to the Head of House) for a few weeks. More violence=Expulsion. We didn't have isolation but it was introduced after I left. I was one of the good kids though lol.

Turn the clock back 60 years we would have got caned (England) and belt (Scotland) and would not have told our parents.

You might not know but in cases where the parents are separated or divorced, the school will only talk to one parent - usually the mother - citing confidentiality. It happened to me. Separated fathers are marginalized, if not demonized.

I’d like to make it clearer that not every British secondary school is as bad as this. Most people DO have manners, and work very hard at school 😀
