The rope is good to have if a person falls into a crevasse. As the glacier moves and melts, there can be deep crevasses below the surface, and you never know how thick a layer of ice is between you and the crevasses. If a person falls down, that person can help themselves with the ice pick if they have not injured themselves too much, and at the same time they can get help from above. Every year people fall into crevasses in Norway, some fall 10-20 meters down. You can be injured when you fall, get crushed and freeze to death while waiting for help. I have never hiked on glaciers, but I have been up top of a glacier with a snowmobile in winter. It was difficult to get up, but we managed. In winter, the crevasses are full of snow that has packed into the crevasses, so it is safer to travel on the glacier.

----- @oh515 ----- - That is so true... I remember a few years back about this family who came to Norway, and they weren't even on the glacier itself, but on a tour path next to it. The parents thought it would be a great photo op to take some pictures standing next to the glacier. So they climbed over the railing, walked over to the side of the glacier and started taking pictures when suddenly a big block of ice broke off and fell on top of them. Tragic irony that those poor children got a once in a lifetime experience going to Norway and now they have to live the rest of their lives with the memory of seeing their parents get crushed and killed by a big block of ice from a glacier. As for the parents, that was just karma... The sign even said to not go near the glacier for this exact reason. -----

You don´t need to go up north in order to hike on a glacier:) ´Folgefonna´ is just south-east of Bergen.

I am norwegian, and I watch many of your videos, it is interesting. I like them. I have done a glacier hike some years ago with my family, 3 kids from may be 12 to 16. We went with a guide and a group of other persons, we were about 13 in the rope, I think. The weather was great, and it was a memorable experience, somewhat demanding though. I was used to hiking, and walking steep mountain sides, but walking in rope is different. You have to follow the same pace as the others, and keep an eye on the rope - keep it a little tight. This makes a big difference not being able to vary the pace just as you like, but keep going. May be it is worst for the youngest. The leader sets the pace so that everybody can follow, but still. Anyway, It is absolutely worth it. 13:14

Most U.S. glaciers are in Alaska; others can be found in Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nevada. So, yes, you have claciers. A norweigan had to educate you on what nature you have in your country....dude, you need to learn more about the US :P And: They all have ice picks. If you fall and can't use your ice pick, the others can use theirs and keep you from sliding all the way down because you are all connected with climbing ropes. And: Americans have nature too. You CAN experience nature and even glaciers. Just go do it in the US cause you have the option!

Agreed. The nature in the US are second to none.
@AlexTheFruitcake
@AlexTheFruitcake Ай бұрын
@@roya-vq2gk Well...let's not go overboard. Other countries have similar nature to you. Some of the mountainous areas in the US are damn near copies of mountains in Norway and same with the forrests. But my point, is that the US has nature and you have literally acres and acres of if so you don't actually NEED to become tourists to experience it, you just need to take a road trip.

03:00 Not with this large spikes, no, but there are different kinds of shoe attachements that have much smaller spikes meant to give extra traction on snow and ice, a lot of Norwegians do have those kinds, though not everyone do.

I'm not sure why Americans don't like to leave their country. You don't have to. There's a lot of scenery. From beaches to mountains over 20,000 ft. You even have Glacier National Park with 700 miles of hiking trails. Greetings from the Black Forest.

Norwegians are on average maby the most sporty western country. You find them hiking old and young everywhere. In the town I live in its 15 000 poeple and we have 15 gyms. When i lived in spain we had around the same number of gyms in a city of 350 000.

It's done before. We're just following the traditions from Fridtjof Nansen crossing the inland glacier on Grenland in 1888, and Roald Amundsen's great Southpole Expedition 1911. Piece of cake.

The shoes most of us have, yes, but the spikes are not part of but fastened on the shoes and unless you hike on glaciers often or climb ice you'd usually rent these for the hike. Shoes with permanent spikes do exist though, but are less typical for these types of hikes. While many Norwegians, and tourists, do hike Glaciers, it'd typically be part of a guided tour or together with someone with experience as it can be quite dangerous some places, for example you could fall into crevasses covered with a layer of snow making them invisible. The glacier shifts and moves all the time, so the conditions also change.

Not all Norwegian have crampons or “spikes” for their shoes. The only reason I have them is cause I like to go to Nepal to climb the peaks there. But glacier hiking is fun but also intense cause you have to keep your self alert at all time so you don’t fall down in a hidden crevas.
