Great new channel for me to react to! 🤗
I have no doubt now why this man is referred to as 'The Father of Modern Warfare'. His ability to utilize his weapons to greatest effect was unmatched for his time. He did not see his cavalry or muskets as merely killing machines but also as a means to disrupt his opponents' forces! He surely was not the first to realize this, but clearly was a head and shoulder above the competition of his time!
Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). Near constant war with Denmark was likely the main reason why Swedens army was so good at the time. Also, they needed to be inventive on the battle field and invest in good training, due to the small population. Quality to make up for lacking quantity.

Connor...artillery did not move away from the round cannonball until the 19th century, and the evolution of rifled breech loading artillery. Before then, there were explosive cannonballs, what we would begin to refer to as "shells", which used slow burning fuses to trigger them to explode an approximate time interval after firing. There were even examples of muzzle loading shells that were not round before the 19th century, but they were difficult to use and very rare. As for the transition from round to pointed ammunition for small arms, that also did not happen until the 19th century. There were precursors to it, but the first widely used conical bullet was the very famous Minie ball that was first used in the Crimean War. The new bullet was so effective that it is estimated that 90 percent of the battlefield casualties during the entire Civil War were caused by Minie balls fired by rifled muskets.

Also, a lot of the cannons on forts or in the battlefield fired "scatter shots", small steel balls or sharp metal pieces. These have been in use almost as long as cannons have been used for warfare and are extremely effective in decimating armies. Their greatest strength was their ability to damage a huge number of people without killing them, causing chaos in enemy ranks and hindering the enemy with fallen bodies.

@@TextiX887 It has been a while since I saw this video, so I forget what Connor was asking, exactly. I know he was asking about conical vs round projectiles and shot versus shell, but I do not remember him asking about other projectiles. This is good info, but I am not sure whether it is within the scope of the question and answer at issue....but thanks either way.✌

20:27 it's also better because there are more shots per volley while still being able to continuously fire.

I think Sweden became such incredible warriors because Sweden became warriors out of necessity. Swedes learnt to fight war to survive, not as a hobby of noblemen or to earn something. Other than pure survival. Scandinavia needed to learn warfare to survive long periods of starvation and natural disaster as Scandinavia isn´t a hospitable place to live. So they learnt to fight others to survive the long millennia of how harsh Scandinavian living. They became Vikings to not die out, which likely got so ingrained into our way of life that it reverberated through multiple eras of warfare.

Cavalrycharges have allways been based on pure chock and fear. Your natural instinct when a horse run right at you is to step aside but if you are a pikeman you have to resist that instinct, stand you ground and hope that the horse run into your pike and not you. Plus of cause that you don't break your arms by the impact.

The intro: Gustav Adolf didn't learn military tactics. He invented it. And don't forget logistics. Wildly important part of war.

The tercio was divided into two (and later, three) coronelias, each commanded by a Coronel. Or in plain English - Colonel. And to put the weight of the old style musket in context, this single-shot weapon was heavier than a modern general purpose machine-gun. By walking forward to shoot instead of marching back to reload, Gustavus transformed the countermarch from a defensive to an offensive tactic.

22:50 ''they dont have baoynets'' early bayonets ment the gun no longer could be fired...not to mention , even the early models that fixed that took precious time to fix onto the rifle , so going berserk with the gun as a big club to ensure your weight of body was added to the charge may been prefferable , there was a manpower reason why he made his battlefield tactics ferocious aswell. Fenrir stirred in its sleep... and in its dreams awaiting its awakening it heard a the thoughts of a king from the lands it called home.... and leeting its ferocity merge with his own and blossom in his dreams.. to behold the father of wolfs soaked in burning haze of rage and the potential of wolfs ferocity when focused as a weapon...

Sweden was good at war for two main reasons: 1) We had to punch above our weight because there were so few of us. 2) Loads of practice.

the tercios were a undefeated tower, wich gustavus adolfus reforms were messured to, true, because he decicevly won twice, ofcourse its still possible to lose from time to time depending on different stuff, wich gustav did once but it was still a decisive blow to the spanish strategy that hadent been seen before, the spanish tactic probably kept working cuz old styles or not as good ones as gustavuss style were still in use, only way to know the result of more battles between them would have been more battles between them, orr, the affect it had after the fact..

You should play CA´s Total War games in connection to your questions on cavalry. Those games make it pretty clear why mounted warfare is som extremely useful. Long story short, cavalry is unbelievable. It can be used in so many inventive ways that it pretty much means guaranteed victory if you have it and your enemy doesn´t.

This shit you watching is rubbish. I wasn't there but the Battle of Breitenfeld was not won as this want to be historian tells you. Flanking maneuvers and lighter artillery that could move in and out position and diverse smaller units hitting flank, that's why the big G is the big G. I did my military training in the late 80's. The Swedish Force at the Battle of Breitenfeld was a 1/3 and the enemy gave up within a day, that's a fact! What did rly happen? Who knows today?
