Tyler, every surname in the states ending with -sen or -son, like Olsen and Anderson has it's roots in Scandinavia. Back in the day, sons would get their fathers name + sen/son as their surname, so your son would have been Tylerson/Tylersen and so on. Once you know this it will be easy to figure out who has roots in scandinavia.

The talking backwards thing has to do with the melody, by the way, from the German perspective. Norwegian is a tonal language, so words that sound the exact same otherwise, you'd still know which word it is based on the tone of the syllables. Imagine there/they're/their, said the same, but you can still tell them apart based on whether it's said in a high, neutral, or low tone. Because of this, Norwegian is often described as sounding like we're singing, or for some German dialects, the melody of a sentence will sound very strange. This also happens to be the most difficult thing to learn, for most foreigners who aren't born to a tonal language, as they often have difficulty telling the difference, if they can hear it at all.

I’m Swedish, born and raised close to the Norwegian border, and I have a thought on the notion that it sounds like it’s spoken backwards, I think it’s based on inflection. Most of us drop intonation towards the end of a sentence, we start high and drop off. Norwegian starts low and peaks towards the end of a sentence. It’s why Norwegian always sounds joyful when spoken.

It's only in the southern Norway they have the "high tongue". In the north, our dialects are "low tounge", just like Swedes. Hence why the southerners in Norway sounds awful when they speak English.

I am from Norway. It is a large country with a small population. Some of the best is that you can hop on the Subway, Bus or bike. And after a small trip, you are out in the nature. Fjords or mountains or nice beaches. We are a little shy folk loving the nature. We dont talk on the Bus, and need space around us. But it is not so difficult to make good friends, And the Women are fantastic.

There are adverts in Norway, like billboards, TV commercials, podcast sponsors, etc. There are some places you are not allowed to advertise, like along the motorways, as to not distract drivers. And I think there might be fewer commercials here then in the US, for example a 20 minute TV program has one commercial break where I believe Americans would have two.

It sounds like the standard phrased response you get from Hollywood stars no matter what country you ask them about. Maybe except for Zach Galifianakis who noticed that we have a LITTLE less advertising in the public than in the US. It is distinguished primarily by the fact that we do not have so many neon screens that pollute buildings and light conditions in the cities. We are more modest with our simple posters. We have strict rules for advertising both in public and on television, radio and in magazines. Medical, alcohol-related and tobacco advertising is strictly prohibited. The same applies to legal professionals, lawyers cannot advertise on billboards etc. The rappers he mentions here are Madcon, (originally Mad Conference), one of Norway's biggest hip-hop bands. Not my type of music but they are very good at what they do.

9:14 Part of it I'd that there's more people of Norwegian ancestry in the US then in Norway as more Norwegians left for the US as a percentage of the population in the home country then any other country other than the Irish. However a lot of it is also just caused by Americans tending to call themselves "from" somewhere if their grandfathers sisters aunt on the fathers side had a boyfriend from that place... By contrast in Norway people who have lived in a city for 3 generations will often say that they live there but they're *really* from this or that village up that and that valley...

Norwegian and German have allot of similar words, but the grammatical structure is often polar opposite. So for example past tense words will be at the front of the sentence in Norwegian, similar to English, they are at the back of the sentence in German. Therefor making it sound a little like one is talking backwards, depending on which language one comes from.

Can you please react to the Norwegian band Kaizers Orchestra? They're unlike anything you've seen. They were Norway's best live band for like 10 years. People all over Europe love them even though they don't speak the language. I'd recommend the live versions on "Kontroll på kontinentet" or "Ompa til du dør". They once played in New York, and even had a concert on Pulpit rock.

I know you are aware of a-ha. If you are like most Americans, you think a-ha is a One hit wonder - which they are definitely not. They are huge all over the place, accept from America. I even think Canadians are more aware of the band than the Americans. For some reason American music industry boycotted them even if Take on me is huge in USA. You should check out more of their music, like The sun always shines on TV, Manhattan Skyline, Summer moved on, Stay on these roads, I've been losing you, Minor Earth Major Sky, Sycamore leaves, Scoundrel days, Train of Thought, Analogue, Hunting High and Low...I could go on and on. People from south east Norway, Østlandet, often speak with ending sentences in a high tone of voice. That's why it can sounds "backwards". Rest of Norway mostly speak opposite of that and more like most English native speakers do, and therefore more often they sounds better in English than south easterners do. Just travel west and/or north in Norway and they sound better.

I’m norwegian and everyone learns english in school since 2nd grade and up every school year until maybe last year in high school some can skip it if they specialize in some study. So everyone in norway that is 50 or below know english. Pronunciation is all over the place tho, some speak it great others very brokenly so it sounds like norwegian but with english words. 🤣

There are many people in America that have Norwegian heritage and probably don't even know, or know much about it... There are probably around AS MANY living in America with Norwegian heritage that there are Norwegians living in Norway. Many MANY Norwegians travelled to the new world, to the ''Great America'' in order to try their luck at a better life, when life in Norway was hard and there was few jobs and poverty. The thing is however, when the Norwegians travelled to America they all had the attitude that ''We are now American, so we must become American.'' which resulted in that alot of Norwegian Americans sort of ''packet their past into a box, and stored it in the attic''. While alot of traditions have of course survived the Americanization, and some family heirlooms or other things over time have been kept and spoken about, the ''Norwegian'' heritage in America is nowhere as large as the Italian or the Irish, people who ''brought their culture over'' with them to America. So as a result, the Norwegian heritage in America was never really put alot into ''focus'' in an attempt to bring the culture over to America, because Norway was Norway, and now they were in America and had to focus on becoming ''Americans'' whatever that was supposed to be.

The english language has something in common with the norwegian. Both of the languages put their verb before the object. Example: I have read a book. The norwegian language have the words in the same order. Other languages puts the verb at the end. That would be like : I have the book readen.

It's not so much that there's no advertisements at all, more like physical advertisements. You'll rarely get people coming up to you on the street trying to sell you stuff. If someone's trying to sell something, they stand aside with a set up of their own, at most, they might offer you a flier or something. As for advertisements on the internet, of course there are. Though, it is illegal to advertise alcohol and cigarettes/vapes, etc on TV and other platforms.
