I stopped clicking on Walter’s world’s videos about 3 years ago. It’s all about “don’t”s, no matter wether it’s about the Netherlands, Norway, Spain or Kyrgyzstan. It’s all easy, in any European country: Learn the basics in native language (thank you, sorry, excuse me, please, can I ask you…), don’t be a dick and most important: stay curious!

If you want to speak/practise your Dutch, just say so and we'll speak Dutch with you. It's just that when we hear someone struggling we want to help and yeah, switching to English, German or French is no problem or burden for the most of us. It makes it easier for us all, but just tell us you if want to speak Dutch and we'll do. And then be prepared for corrections ... And about planning, yeah, I do like to know beforehand if one of my friends is coming round. But that is never planned two months before. Most times it's just a message, hey I'm in the neighbourhood, is it convenient if I come round for a coffee? When my group of friends plans a gathering that everyone can attend, yes then we plan a couple of months in advance. I don't think we're that easily pissed off, in general, I think the Dutch are a kind and forgiving people, especially to people from other countries. And if you do piss us of, you will know because we will tell you 🤣

I was born and raised in Amsterdam and there are many things that piss me off, but none of them have anything to do with tourists. The worst thing I can think of, are tourists being slow and getting in my way because of that. They are on vacation and therefore they take their time. I understand. But the citizens just go by their normal routine. We have things to do. We are not on vacation. I think this situation applies to every country though.

A lot of it just comes down to respect and efficiency. Be honest and forthcoming, be respectful about the country you're visiting and our culture so don't complain to much, respect our time (don't come late and don't struggle to speak Dutch if switching to English is more efficient for us). If you're early you're on time, if you're on time you're late, if you're late don't bother... If we say we'll be at the movies at 8 we make it a point to be there 7:55 to show the other person we respect their time and value their company.

Gotta love how people talk about "illegal immigration" and "people coming in the wrong way" while blithely ignoring the millions of people trying to enter a liveable country "the right way" and actually being left in refugee camps for decades. If I were a refugee, I'd be getting my family to safety any way I could, and fck anyone who said we had to wait in a refugee camp until I die of old age. If you want people to comply with your "right way" to enter your country, you have to make that decently accessible for people who want their kids to grow up in safety.

No, only a few “Azijnsijkers” [bad word] will care but that are people who need to complain, isn’t it over Holland, then over the Weather [to cold or to warm]. Other people [they are idiots]. But we see it like this, there’s North Holland, South Holland and the rest of Holland, it’s the name our fathers give it to our beloved country, not official but from they’re hearts 💕. Keep on lookin over our country, we are a very complex nation, the rest off cause, i’m but a simple “Country Boy”, “Jan met de korte achternaam “.

It may be interesting to note that people from certain provinces will not appreciate being addressed as “from Holland”, just like the Scots or Welsh don’t like being addressed as “from England”. It’s notably the provinces of Friesland and Limburg where many see themselves separate from the western coastal provinces of Holland. Also, oftentimes people from Belgium use the word Hollanders in a mocking sort of way, even though they are well aware that it’s the kingdom of the Netherlands. Holland is not a country, but one could arguably say it’s the BRAND the country is known by. That is why you can see Holland on the back of any truck, or on any soccer shirt or possibly any other products. It has nothing to do with geography. So why, if people from Poland are Poles, people from Holland aren’t called Holes? Because Holland is not a country. Simple.

The problem with some of the people complaining is that they have an air like things are better in their own country. If you are willing to complain about your own county, you are perfectly fine to complain about ours in a similar way. And in Holland (both combined) the population is about 6.8 million. With a total of almost 18 million in the country. So, a large part. But certainly not 80%, more around 38% Personally I see "Holland" more as a "pet name" thus used in fun. But when talking more "official" you use: "The Netherlands" And you are right, I have not really ever got the idea that we consider us better as every other country. tbh, the one country that has a large percentage of their people thinking that way are Americans. Speaking Dutch is fine and appreciated even. Saying you want to practice your Dutch will get you a long way, to an extent. You don't do it in a shop when there is a row, for instance.

Lmfao! so true that guy was speaking from experience 🤣💯 & well said about ''the non dutch dont mean much'' bit. Atm its just really hard to accept 500k of immigrants when theres already a house shortage of 400.000 (alot of dutch people waiting for 10+ years for a house). Then giving all the immigrants everything for free, (ofcourse theres also hard working people that come here as immigrants & i applaud that!❤) , but plenty of people sadly, come under false reasons to the Netherlands & benefit from our system that provides everything for them. A House (no waiting list), Full Healthcare, Salary ($1k each month per person w kids more ofc), Full dentist care,Some get $10k for Furniture, others get nice bikes.. All for free! Then also the law doesn't apply for them, they rob a store 2 hours later there back robbin the same store 🤣 So sadly some are living better then people that are born here.😐 So yea heated topic i guess 😆💯

Actually, last year, it was just above 400k imigrant. A difference of 20%. Many are needed as the birthrate in the netherland is low and many people are into the retirement years. Those tomatos don't put themselves on the shop shelves. Many immigrants want to work, just have a hard time finding a job, because they don't speak the language, don't now the rules, get turned down because employees assume they will get problems with the. The real problem is the people that want to take advantage of the system. Sadly, both are just placed in the same corner.

Great reaction ! To be fair I wouldn't be annoyed by any of those things (with exception of the trash (but that's not a ' foreigner'-thingie and hey I get drunk once in a while so I don't judge the Brits :)). We love it when foreigners try to speak Dutch (lots of friends are married with ' foreigners' from a myriad countries all over the world (including my brother) and it takes a year or two to get the hang of it and although it's true we almost subconsciously switch to English (they will always tell me, ' Dutch Willy, please in Dutch, (not English (nor Brabants ! :) Dutch I've got to learn' . It happened a trillion times. So don't worry about it. We're glad to help.

Charlie, if you want to improve your Dutch, I recommend the channel "NOS Nieuws van de Week", which is a Dutch news channel in simplified language and is very suitable to learn. As a German, I have some advantages learning Dutch, I grew up near the border and the Low German dialect here which is technically my native language instead of standard German also has Dutch influences. Ik hou van Nederland, mooie taal en geweldige mensen

Holland for me has always been the entire Netherlands. North Holland and South Holland are provinces, but Holland means all of the Netherlands. I live in North Holland, so maybe that's got something to do with it. I've always considered the Netherlands to be the official name of our country, and Holland more of a mascot name. The Netherlands is depicted as red white and blue, and Holland is orange. At least in my brain. I don't know about the rest.

Uhm, you won't see Black Pete (Zwarte Piet) around christmas... Sinterklaas is 6 december (that is in Belgium, I think in The Netherlands they celebrate it 5 december) so you'll see Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet a few weeks before Sinterklaas but never after the 6th. And of course people will be pissed when you are standing in the bike lane, and not only in The Netherlands, it's dangerous for the person standing and the bikers! One thing is, as a Belgium I use "Holland" for the whole country as well and I'm definitely not the only one. I know Holland is only part of the Netherlands but it's what we've been calling it for so long... I try to use "Nederland" but "Holland" slips in once in a while.

"Made in Holland" is what we print on all things made in The Netherlands, technically it is not 100% correct. It is something like Americans call their country "the Greatest Democracy in the World" which is technically 100% incorrect. The US is only two places above the bottom of the list. North Korea and The Peoples Republic of China have a zero and a one party political system. The US has a two party system, making it twice as good as China.

Thank you charlie for nuancing his comment. And yes, it's all about amsterdam. I'm from the south. It's different here. Like spontaneous visits. Here the door is always open. The more the merrier. And I think we like people trying to speak dutch. But it's just easier to speak english. So we're not angry but just wanna help you. But there's a history there. Way back, germans would come here and expect us to speak german (most of us do cause who even speaks dutch?). Okay, if you're not even trying, f.... you. But if you try we'll help you or switch to english or german. No problem, no worries m8.

Hold your horses: you should not move to another country with the attitude that you intend to complain when you yourself think it is appropriate. You are the underdog. You are the stranger in another country, noone asked you for coming. I myself have moved around a few times to other countries in my life and you should know: you go through phases when you are in another culture. First, excitement and curiosity. Then a saturation phase. And then the old codes that you have grown up with are pulled, -old patterns pull you towards the encoded upbringing. And here you should not start imposing on others that you think they should do it differently. You were the one who chose to come to the country, so your own exercise is whether you can integrate or not. Don't forget: in old Europe we have often opted out of the American set of values. We have a set of values you didn't experience growing up. You are the stranger and you either integrate or not. American values are different, so you are the one to adapt and not complaint. It's interesting how so many Americans are now moving to Europe, but you are not greeted here as fresh air. Any too egoistic silly proposals in governments here are contered with: No thanks, we don't want American conditions here. Beware of that.

Uhm.. most of us Nederlanders are direct. We don’t want to have to guess what you think, and you mostly don’t have to guess what we think. Bút the average Amsterdammer takes it to a whole new level. I personally think they often áre bordering on rudeness. You can make yourself perfectly clear in gentler words, being direct without bulldozing over. You can make jokes without using the guillotine. Outside of the Holland-provinces a lot of us are a bit less Loud. (And GO explore the beautiful countryside. Amsterdam is not the only expression of Nederland. Take your bike, relax, enjoy)

We quickly change to a different language when comunicatig with non dutch speakers becouse we are used to adapt, but when we know that someone is living in the netherlands for a longer period and they don't learn dutch it can be a reason for irritation and eventualy many dutch will turn theire back on you and no longer will speak to the foreighner/expad/immigrant in an other language than dutch.

The biggest problem here is that the government started lowering the national debt by cutting costs and privatisation. And no matter what the economy does they never stopped cutting costs. That really made people way more possessive about what they have or might get. Which in turn made for less forgiveness for (economic) migrants, specially among the less well off. Which in turn was used by demagogues who are now (temporary) in power as a protest against established political parties. Luckily they are allready ffing it up😂 sad part is that we are one of the few countries paying if the national debt.. and not just the interest. This is seen as grosly unfair, especially since the divide between rich and poor is growing here also. The rich just forgot that if they don't pay to keep the poor happy revolution is inevitable. Yay 😂

About the whole "complain about dutch things". I have several american friends, and I dont mind talking politics or about dumb dutch things, but they tend to miss the nuances and assume allot of things because that is true in the US, so it should be true over here aswell. Also the needs of a dutch person are kinda different, which americans dont really understand. Like how service in restaurants works here. Good review video, your reaction was spot on, the guy of the video you watched, a bit Amsterdam-centric however.

1. "I can complain about anything whenever I want and nobody can stop me.". Absolutely true. I didn't complain but emigrated from The Netherlands 44 years ago and moved to a country where I wanted to make a better life. No regrets. 2. I'm also direct. We have a saying "Om de hete brei heen draaien". 3. Sushi is also raw fish. 4. If you ride your bike on the sidewalk that's a fine. 5. "Hup Holland, hup!", Not "Hup Nederland, hup.". 6. Good English? No, "steenkolen Engels".

Immigration is a hot political topic at the moment. We may very well get our first hard-right Cabinet by tomorrow. The right wing parties involved want to reduce the number of illegal immigrants (asylum seekers) as much as possible. On the other hand, the left wing parties (that do not have a majority) would rather put an emphasis on the fact that they are asylum seekers and should be helped as much as possible.

I do think that lots of Dutch people like it when you try to speak Dutch. Just because you are trying.
