Collingwood won last year's Grand Final, so Mason ended up getting a premiership medal.

I’m not a fan of Collingwood. But I’m super happy for Mason finally getting his premiership medal.

@@kringsbYeah, you don't need to be a Pies supporter to be happy for the guy. He followed his dream across the world and did good. Crazy how Australian he sounds... I guess we grew on him.

I had so much more respect for Mason after I saw this, he had a pretty comfortable life set up in the US, he just had to step into it really so to turn away and gamble it all on a sport you've never heard of in a country on the other side of the world is just so freaking brave ❤

A bit of context needs to be given here, especially in relation to Mason's first game. ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand is the equivalent of our Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and Armed Forces Day, all rolled into one, so it's a very solemn day. But for this game, which since 1995 has ALWAYS been Essendon vs. Collingwood, the nation all but stops for that game. It is the second highest attended game in the entire country (second only to the Grand Final). Mason debuted in that game. It's a big thing and tradition that everyone on your team comes to you and congratulates you when you kick your first goal in the AFL. It's an even bigger deal (and in a rare club of players) when your first possession is a kick and a goal in the AFL. Mason Cox - in the 2nd biggest match of the entire year, in his first possession - kicks his first ever AFL goal, ON ANZAC DAY. That is why Cameron Ling (the commentator) said "Can you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal on ANZAC Day?" with Bruce McAvaney saying "That didn't just happen!" Yet it did. Fast Forward to that preliminary final against Richmond. That game is the equivalent of, say, the AFC or NFC championship game in the NFL, where the winner goes to the Super Bowl, and the loser plans for the next season. That's what this game was. Richmond had a 22-consecutive game winning streak at the MCG, and were odds on favorite to win not only that match, but the premiership as well. You saw what happened. Everyone else filled you in on Collingwood's premiership from this past season.

As a West Coast Eagles supporter I'll say this about Mason Cox. At the end of the day earned his spot on the team . His height might have got him noticed but his ability kept him in the team.

As a Carlton supporter I am compelled to hate anything to do with Collingwood…but Cox coming over and doing so well was incredible! We’ve had many Irish Gaelic Footballers come over to play AFL too. Maybe you could check out the international rules between Ireland and Australia….

Mason has had a few more big games since. He tore West Coast apart in the space of about 5 minutes in a finals game in 2020, and he had a very consistent season in 2022. In 2023 he had some good games and some average games, but he ultimately completed the fairytale and held his place in the team that won the premiership in one of the greatest grand finals ever.

AFL in the US celebrated 25 years last year, so you could find a local team to support. I think I heard you say that you were in California, well they appear to have 5 clubs in CA, San Diego Lions, Orange County Giants, Los Angeles Dragons, Golden Gate Australian Football and Sacramento Suns. There's also a club in Las Vegas and Phoenix. So depending exactly where you are you should be able to find a team. Cheers

I think it’s important to note that the prelim final in 2018 against Richmond was intense. Collingwood walked into it with expectations to lose, Richmond were in the middle of their dynasty. So for Cox to brush all that aside is truly remarkable

I thought that the Mason Cox experiment was over, with his eye injury and the demise of (Coach) Nathan Buckley. Then the new coach, who was a friend of Cox's gave him a chance for a revival and he helped Collingwood to the Grand Final and finally win himself a Premiership Medal in 2023.

AFL needs players of different heights for the game. On the other end of the height spectrum are the shorter footballers who excel at getting the balls that are low down.
