Everytime the Dutch police uses a weapon, this has to be logged and has to be judged by an official independent special police force ('rijksrecherche'). A gun is a weapon obviously, but a police car is also considered a weapon. In these clips, the suspects were either under the influence of something bad, or were armed and dangerous (3:54, 7:24), or are in a psychosis like in the first clip. For example, here in Italy with random traffic stops you might see a submachinegun as deterrent to misconduct. Just in case this is different in the US: The reason that they did not pit at first, but then went for a pit later is safety reasons. You don't know how the driver will respond to a pit and at the time the driver is mostly just a danger to themselves so they pursue. When the driver went into oncoming traffic at the off-ramp, at that point the speed of all traffic including the suspect is relatively low, on top if the driver manages to make it onto the highway they will create a situation many times more dangerous than a pit. Additionally when a driver has shown a tendency to be dangerous like the off-ramp move, police will take an opening like an opportunity to ram them at low speeds more because they want to remove the driver before he finds another dangerous situation to create. In general especially for smaller crimes they won't be ramming of the bat usually. Also the reason they normally won't shoot at you unless you are a direct danger to someone else I've also seen chases in the UK, where the UK police chooses to stop the pursuit when a reckless driver drives into densely populated areas. Without the police on the tail, the suspect will drive more carefully to avoid attention rather than speed through every turn driving into a family on the sidewalk or in their car It's always nice to see in videos like these that they make these decisions in favor of the safety of the public first and foremost

At 9:20 you say that in America, the police are only supposed to shoot if they are trying to kill you. If someone is killed by a police officer in The Netherlands, the officer will be sent to court and will be judged for murder. The officer can be prosecuted, depending on the situation. This has actually happened in the past. The police only shoots to immobilize the target, by first shooting in the air and then aiming for the legs for instance, never the torso or head.

That's a bit over the top. Look up the article (in Dutch) _"Agent leert in nood juist op de borst te schieten en niet op de benen: gaat er iemand door dood, dan volgt zelden een straf"_ from the Amsterdam Free University. The title translates as _"Officers in distress are tought to shoot the torso, not the legs. If the target dies, officers are rarely sentenced."_ _"If someone is killed by a police officer in The Netherlands, the officer will be sent to court and will be judged for murder."_ That's completely wrong. If they shoot someone (lethally or not), the situation will always be investigated thoroughly by a dedicated department (rijksrecherge). However, they are only prosecuted if that investigation concludes that the officer should not have used his weapon. According to the article, that happens in about 10% of cases. Half of the prosecutions never make it to court, and for the ones that do, about a third result in a conviction. Officers are not tried for murder in such cases, but usually for (attempted) manslaughter. No, that's not the same. _"The police only shoots to immobilize the target, by first shooting in the air and then aiming for the legs for instance, never the torso or head."_ Also not true. From the article, translated by me: _"The prosecutor always checks if the use of a weapon was necessary in the situation. Police may fire on a suspect who is fleeing from arrest [by me: only for suspect of violent crimes]. In that case they should aim for the legs. It's different if they use their gun in self defence. In that case, they're taught to aim for the biggest target: the torso."_ All in all, the bar for police to draw their weapon here is a lot higher than it is in the US, and police bullets are investigated rather seriously. But it's not nearly as extreme as you suggest. In most cases, the usage of police weapons is deemed justified and there's no conviction.

How are cops in NL scary? Compared to the US, it was all calm and collected. Watch any video in from the US where a firearm is involved, and the suspect gets riddled with bullets. In NL they control the situation and talk you down. And arrest you. Maybe fire a few warning shots. Shoot to kill/subdue is a last resort here. The ramming videos were all very short clips from much longer videos. Ramming is only allowed if the situation calls for it. The cops’ response needs to be proportional to the force the suspect exhibits. The reason the car in the first ramming video was rammed was because he was going onto a highway, the wrong way. The choice was to ram him, of probably him going head first into oncoming traffic. The second ramming clip was a suspect who already rammed other vehicles. If you’re just making a “normal” traffic infraction, and you treat the cops like the human beings they are, you won’t have a problem. If the infraction wasn’t too bad and you’re not rude or belligerent you might even get off with a warning.
@jokethejokejoker4 күн бұрын
Hi, I am dutch and I will explain the senarios for you. The first two were rammed quickly because of the danger the suspect was creating. I’m a U.S. citizen who has had the privilege of living in several European countries, including over 20 years in the Netherlands. Out of all the places I’ve called home, the Netherlands stands out as one of the best. One of the things that impresses me most is the professionalism and approachability of the Dutch police-they might just be some of the nicest in the world. I remember an incident near our neighborhood where the police had to chase down an armed criminal. They managed to subdue him with a shot to the backside-effective but non-lethal. In the U.S., that same situation might have ended far more tragically. Even the way Dutch police train their dogs reflects their focus on minimizing harm. Instead of biting, their dogs are trained to grab onto a person’s clothing, which shows a thoughtful commitment to de-escalation. These kinds of practices are just one of the many reasons I admire life in the Netherlands.

In the one with the Range Rover they don't shoot because he's trying to reverse and/or possible deadly force. They shoot because they know who is in that car and that he is dangerous. _"Something to realize too, no qualified immunity for cops here. Hence everytime they fire their gun a branch of the militairy will do an investigation if their actions where to serve and protect the population."_ True! But the investigation is not performed by the military (I think you're referring to the Marechaussee?), but the Rijksrecherche, a specialized government investigation service that serves to fight government-related corruption and police misconduct. The closest US analogy would probably be the FBI. _"If they kill an unarmed person they will have to face a judge and will get jail time if found at fault."_ Not necessarily, it depends on the situation. For example, if the investigation concludes that the officer reasonably believed someone was armed, the use of lethal force may be justified. If you're interested, look up the article _"Agent leert in nood juist op de borst te schieten en niet op de benen: gaat er iemand door dood, dan volgt zelden een straf"_ by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; it provides some interesting facts about these things. It actually talks of a 2022 case of an officer who killed someone who was violent but was ultimately found to be unarmed. The officer was not convicted. And when convictions do happen, as far as I can tell it's usually fairly light sentences (e.g. community service) when it is a somewhat understandable error in judgment in a difficult situation.

In the first video they bump the car because it's taking an exit to enter a highway, so in a minute he would be a wrong-way driver on the highway. Small detail, dutch police can fire warning shots. There's been multiple situations where there were fake guns involved and Dutch cops are trained to fire warning shots first unless there is a real immanent threath. Also firing at vehicles is considered in chases where the vehicle is too dangerous to continue driving and there is no obvious way to stop the vehicle by using other vehicles. E.g. a vehicle has 2 occupants who are suspested to be armed, then the best case scenario would be to try and disable vehicle parts like tires in order to force the driver to stop to then execute a so called BGTV, this is a technique where guns drawn the occupents of the vehicle are talked into exiting their vehicle otherwise lethal force is used.

If an officer himself or another person is in mortal danger, the officer may decide to use his service weapon. Since the Range Rover tried to ram the police car(s) while reversing, it has endangered the officer(s) and they are authorized to use their weapon. Usually, one or more warning shots will be fired first and if you look closely at time 7.35 (in the original clip 5.43), you can clearly see that the officers fire these warning shots (into the air).

@mariohendriks16 күн бұрын
This is the translation from the official Dutch Police website: "When can the police shoot? During a dangerous situation, the police always try to de-escalate. First, the officer uses his voice to get the suspect to do or not to do something. If this fails, the officer warns, if possible, that he is going to use force. If the officer decides to use force, the officer will consider whether and what means of force will be used. Depending on the situation, the officer estimates the type of force that is most proportionate. If an officer himself, or another person, is in mortal danger, the officer may decide to use his service pistol. In extreme cases, he can aim at a person's torso because it is necessary to disable it immediately. Targeting the legs is not effective in these cases and innocent victims may occur. These situations usually fall under the concept of self-defence. A judge will determine afterwards whether there was self-defence. If necessary, an officer may also use his firearm when arresting someone suspected of a serious offense. In those situations, the officer has learned to aim at the suspect's legs"

In general the police here in the netherlands don’t try to ram or pit cars unless they pose a danger to the police or public. In the first video they didn’t hit him until he tried to drive the wrong way onto the highway. The police also rarely shoot at anyone that isn’t armed (or believed to be). The shot fired in the range rover video was a warning shot (I think the people in the video were believed to be armed) fired up in the air.
@CallioNyx5 күн бұрын
I don't know - in a city, firing into the air means decent odds someone, somewhere, gets hit or property damage. Sure, it could happen, but I wouldn't expect that to be SOP.
@NicoSteentjes5 күн бұрын
This seems to me, to be regular arrests. More dangerous arrest are made by special trained / equipped arrest teams. They are stationed around the country and drive around in fast (German) unmarked cars. When they are on the move, the arrest is considered dangerous. These are supplemented by a special tam of the Dutch military police (they have civil duties also). In ultimate cases (like large scale terrorism, plane hijacts or on platforms in the North Sea), the Dutch Navy Marines have a special intervention unit - if needed complemented by Dutch Army special forces.

In the Netherlands, seeing a police officer pull a weapon is a rarity. It is rarely necessary. 62 years old, live in a large Dutch city, and have only seen it happen twice before my eyes. During a two-week visit to the US, I also witnessed a comparable situation twice. Maybe that was a huge coincidence... 🙂

0:58 we dRive on the Right side of the road, and waLk on the Left (little trick I use to help my brain damage remember it despite living in the Netherlands 😅) 1:25 subtitles on what the cops are saying here: we have to stop him now, if he gets on the highway the damage will be huge (translated by my post migraine brain, might not be 100% accurate but its pretty much what theyre saying) then text on the screen: suspect is still trying to drive away, even when the officers are approaching after having forced the suspect off the road 2:31 text on screen: through the walkie-talkie theyre receiving information about the 4th suspect that ran off. The co-dricer knows exactly where to go and is navigating the driver. 3:11 officers shouting several times: stop running! Show me your hands! 3:57 can't really figure out what they said here other than ''now'' a few times when talking about using something/putting something to action 4:14 officer signalling to the car to just keep driving past them, not stay there. if the car stays there, it would block the police car if they have to jump in and race off. 4:34 depends which officers you ask. some yes, some no. my sister is studying, _can't remember the dutch or english word_ , well the officers who check traffic and parkings but higher than a meter maid (is it called meter maid or did my netflix series get that wrong?). either way, she won't have a gun or a taser or something like that. but I've seen plenty officers who do. so it really depends on what kind of officer you ask, but I've never looked into it so I might be off. 5:25 tekst: in the black car in front of them is an officer in civilian clothes. 5:34 tekst: the suspects ... are/be (hard to translate with the covered tekst). they start running and try to get away. 5:49 tekst: three out of four suspects are cuffed, colleagues .... (I'm guessing that's meant to be ''colleagues are chasing the 4th suspect'') 5:54 tekst: range rover drives into a police car that's blocking the road during a high speed chase 7:02 probably street cams 7:42 they can shoot at the tired rather than the driver, theoretically speaking. however, this suspect already slammed into a police car and went into a busy shopping road where cars arent even allowed... if I were an officer, I would just want to get him off the street, one way or another. 8:35 I cant help but think that that dog doesnt sound really scary... I just... can't help it XD welcome to my autistic brain focusing on something most people wouldnt notice or care about but is very important to me 9:00 I'm not sure what would scare me more... but then again, I can totally see myself not being scared at all and instead be confused by something like all officers having the top button of their shirt open except for one officer 9:45 I don't know much about it but my guess would be, that they want to avoid shooting a person at all costs. you need to stop the suspect and in this case, chasing through narrow streets, there's a high chance someone will get seriously injured if not killed and little opportunities to get in front of the car to stop it, especially considering they already rammed a police car out of the way. shooting the tires makes sense to me, it's harder to drive away without hurting anyone 10:15 I havent seen any continuation on that but from what I see: they're raiding a house and they find several people inside, then one officer spots a gun and calls it out. I think the point of showing this is just how organized they go in and with how many officers. if netflix is any representation of american cops (The Rookie & S.W.A.T.), they go in with waaayy fewer officers than the dutch police does. 10:28 YOU GOT TOYS?! I wanna plaaayy

4:40 dude all police are armed in Europe. In some countries it's just not all cops. Like in Germany, most City Police (Stadtpolizei) are not armed (except in Frankfurt and Offenbach). In England most "beat cops" are not armed, but there are still armed units. In Norway the police do not carry a weapon on their person, but they do have a weapon's lock box in the car from which they can retrieve a weapon if necessary. 9:18 not sure how it is in the Netherlands, but in most European countries police officers have to aim for non-lethal body parts (or tires or whatever) if they can stop the suspect that way. They can only use deadly force if the suspect can reasonably also kill someone, if they do not kill him first. If you look at the statistics for Germany, most police officer shootings hit the suspects knees.

7:35 Those were warningshot, that is procedure unless it's selfdefense. You can tell that guns aren't really a thing here since people flock to the scene to see what's going on. You'd think they'd go the other way when they see 20 cops with their gun drawn. The different camera angles are from camera's that are operated by the police. These are often in area's like city centers, near ambassy's of high ranking people in the government or in area's where there is high crime etc. I believe this is near a prison so that could be one of the reasons.

0:45 The suspect is doing everything he can to escape. Sparks come off his car when he performs a u-turn over the central reservation. 1:14 Due to the severe danger, this car must be stopped ASAP. Should he reach the motorway, consequences will be inconceivable (why they rammed the car). 1:25 Even after the crash, the suspect continues his attempts to drive off. While policemen approach the car on foot, he keeps his foot on the pedal. 2:32 Over the radio, officers are informed where the fourth suspect ran off to. 2:35 The second officer knows exactly where this is and navigates the driver to the location. 2:51 The fourth suspect is seen on a field of grass. Afterwards, everything happens rapidly. 5:24 //first line not fully readable (other text over it), something about a suspect// In the black car ahead drives a police officer in civilian garb. 5:54 The Range Rover drives at high speed, during the chase, into the police car blocking the road. Dutch and Belgian police are high trained and work together a lot to solve cross border crimes ( you have Amsterdam, rotterdam in the Netherlands which are major ports and Antwerp+Zeebrugge that are also huge ports in Belgium. Big ports mean organized crime and since Belgium and the Netherlands arent that big cross border crime is an easy go to way for criminals. Do a crime in Belgium drive over the border ( there are no checkpoints along the border) in the Netherlands and well the criminals are "free". There were criminal gangs that were lobbing hand grenades at rival gangs, at banks, at local ordinary peoples homes. First happened in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and then it moved to Antwerp and Brussels too. Joint task force arrested those gangs but it was the special police units that are trained to deal with terrorists ( and are recruited from special forces military branches)

08:40 - the reason they did shoot was imminent threat; even then they don't go for the magdump. Any time a Dutch cop even draws his weapon, there's an absolute raft of paperwork that needs to be completed; when shots are fired, a judicial inquiry is opened to judge whether or not the cop (or cops) were justified in shooting. There's no qualified immunity either, I believe. And our police academy is ~4 years; most of the training is teaching law, application of law, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and so on. So basically the default strategy for police (and I guess this goes for most of Europe) is to attempt de-escalation, if that doesn't work, non-lethal force, and only in an absolute last resort situation do the guns come out.

The Dutch police aren’t that bad. Most of them are reasonable to have a conversation with. Only if you do not obey their commands it can escalate. For just speeding you will get a ticket, which as a foreigner you need to pay on the spot, but that’s it. From my experience there is a lot more equality between cops and civilians in The Netherlands than some parts of the US, and certainly other continents other than America and Europe.

from what I’ve been taught as a kid, dutch police use their gun more as a tool than a killing weapon, sure there may have been cases I haven’t heard of but shooting tires and legs to disable a dangerous situation does happen more often than you think. killing is most of the time not done tho, also because the public usually doesn’t condone such acts since it does kind of align with what american police tend to be ridiculed for. Only time I ever hear of shooting to kill is when military police and force is involved, for example, home invasion or organized crime/drug organizations/gangs/kidnappings. and they won’t send normal cops to these situations either, it’s usually a very sure situation. they know what is inside, confirmed there’s danger, and jump right ontop of the criminals with armed military force and shields.

I am not afraid of Dutch police. I am afraid of US police though. These are probably the most extreme clips. Police rarely fire their weapon. And yes, warning shots can be given instead of direct lethal force. If they go in guns drawn, it's generally because they have information the suspect is carrying a firearm. In the US, it's not a question as to whether the suspect has a gun, it is a question how many guns they have on them.

Yes, the dutch police is armed, they are highly trained. But they wont shoot until it's absolutly needed. If someone has an easy access gun, they probably are not law abiding citizens. There are people who own guns in the Netherlands. If they transport them they need to be in a locked up case. Some people shoot recreational at a shooting range. There are licenced hunters who keep wildlife healthy or in check. There are rules and regulations in place. Those people will follow those rules. Otherwise they loose the licence. I dont know what the procedure is when the police knows if the suspect is armed and dangerous.

They use the "BenaderingsTechniek Gevaarlijke Verdachten" ("Approaching Technique Dangerous Suspects"), BGTV for short. It has been shown and called out a few times in this video. Officers will keep their weapon aimed at the suspect, and will give them warnings like "if you reach for your weapon, you will be shot". Then the suspect is instructed to lay down in such a way they cannot pose an immediate threat, and they will be handcuffed. In case the suspect does not cooperate, a warning shot can be fired, or in extreme cases police can shoot to disable (i.e. aim for the legs).

As far as I know, the only unarmed police forces in Europe are in Norway and Iceland. Norway armed their police for a while following the Utöya massacre, but they soon gave up and now their police (like the Icelandic police) have weapons in their cars, quickly accessible if needed, but NOT carried on an everyday basis. A very good policy in my opinion, especially given the general security and safety experienced in these countries.

yes they would only shoot a warning shot or shoot the tires. The possibility of actual shooting at the suspect is really low, they will only do that if the suspect is like killing people in front of their eyes or something like that. And all these clips are probably suspects with a high risk, you dont have to worry police acting this way if you are just speeding or something. The people in these clips probably are very heavy criminals or have done some serieus dangerous stuff (or are doing them still, like the car in the first clip that tried to go to the highway in the opposite direction) If you cross a red light or speed, you will just gently asked to pull over by a police car and then they will ask you what happend. i mean one of my relatives was speeding because his house was on fire, the police actually escorted him to his home (after they checked if it was true ofcourse)
@ikkedus62554 күн бұрын
for speeding you get a high fine. They are very expensive there. For example, 30 km. to fast is 420 euro!! If you drive faster than 30 km to fast, you will have to appear before the judge, then you have a problem. If that is not the first time, then you really have a big problem.
