Damn rabbits with some Norwegian dialect! :P "Ha det på bade din gamle sjokolade" could also translate too "Bye, you old piece of chocolate!" And you are asking about the grass at the roof? It's the old way too isolate the roof and we have also found out it has positive effect for CO2 because they are producing more oxygen meanwhile they are also taken in CO2.

Grass on the roof is an old Norwegian building tradition. It consists of peat. Underneath, the roof is covered with bark from trees. Today, it is more common to use plastic under. Such roofs insulate against both cold and heat. In old log houses, the extra weight also helped to press the timber together so that there were fewer cracks and cold drafts.

Hi! It's been 30 years since I moved to Norway. I left my French nationality to become Norwegian. Same thing with my wife from Mexico. Norway is a unique country that is difficult to understand if you don't experience it from the inside. many things impossible in other places are the norm here. Some facts that you may not know. All details of tax returns are accessible to everyone. If someone checks my tax return, I will then be notified of the identity of the person who viewed it. For example, you can just turn on your computer and ask to see all the tax declarations of residents of the same street, or of people with the same name, etc. This would be impossible in France. I live in Bergen, the 2nd largest city in Norway. Every summer, the garden store on my street is too small to store all the items for sale. As a result, there are 50m of merchandise outside on the sidewalk day and night for several weeks. Last summer, I estimated that there was $22,000 worth of merchandise left unattended outside day and night. No one would think of stealing anything there. I am particularly distracted, and I have already forgotten my bag twice on the bus with money, papers and phone inside. (Urban bus passing through the city center during rush hour). Both times, an hour and a half later when the bus returned to the bus stop where I had gotten off, forgetting my things, I found my things on the seat where I had left them. I remember that in the early 2000s, Hordaland (Bergen region) went almost 2 years without a fatal traffic accident. When someone drinks, even just one drink, NO ONE gets behind the wheel. When I return to France, I am horrified at every family reunion about this behaviour. You NEVER enter people's homes with your shoes on. Everyone in socks. Norway is the country with the most Olympic gold medals per capita (alltime). Moreover, in 2023, all results compared to the size of their respective populations, of all the countries in the world it is Norway which then obtains the best sporting results (in the 17 most practiced sports in the world, well well far ahead of the USA). The longest road tunnel is in Norway (Lærdalstunnel). The deepest too (Eiksundstunnel). Besides, there are so many tunnels in Norway that we even find impressive roundabouts inside the mountains!! just check pictures of "Norwegian tunnel" on google. some are impressive. Likewise, Atlanterhavsveien is one of the most incredible roads in the world. more than 30% of cars in Bergen are electric (world record). etc. Norway is simply incredible

In regards to theft, I grew up in Norway during the 90's and 2000's, and even back then you wouldn't leave anything unattended because people do steal. The difference is in smaller communities like a town or village where everyone knows everyone. You can't steal because everyone would know who did it. In a bigger city, and urban areas, too many people, and few knows each other. I moved to the capital over 18 years ago whilst still in high school... love the city, but I would never leave my things anywhere as it would dissapear. I used to live down town and I saw pick pocketing all the time, especially the prime victim: unaware, naive tourists with their backpacks and bag open for anyone to steal. Especially on public transport. I know plenty of Norwegians who has gotten their things stolen, while on the bus, metro, tram, of course this was during rush hour, and the space was packed. I always make sure to always hold or keep your backpack in front of you, same with bags, and purses. I like keeping them in my hand, so that if they wanna steal, they have to take it out of my hands. And I'm 37 and never been pickpocketed, robbed or lost anything.

15:34 the grass on the roof works as natural insulation, preventing heat loss in a time before artificial insulator materials, but some still use it for a variety of reasons. as for how, it starts as just regular turf that's been removed from the ground and secured to the roof using a variety of different anchoring methods.

Acually the "knock on the door" is more true than you think. In the villages up north, you walk in the front door, remove your shoes and jacket, then you either knock on the door into the kitchen or living room before you enter.
@meanmachine6117

The grass on the roof is very good insulation. It also makes the cabin or house glide more into the nature and not stand so much out. The roof is built as normal, but with a plastic and then cloth cover and then its covered with turf/peat and thats the grass growing. It has to be mowed in the summer and in some places plowed in the winter :)

Norwegian home Guard units train foreign troops, like marines or other more specialized units in winter warfare. There's a Norwegian humourist, Kjell Aukrust, who calculated that if the development of height from the 1800s was extrapolated backwards, the vikings should have been dwarfs. She's basically saying goodbye on the bathroom you old chocolate. Which makes perfect sense in Norwegian. The merry Christmas lutefisk thing is just gobbeltygook.

13:44 the "tut tut" is kinda like saying "honk honk" as "tut" is the word we use to refer to things like the sound of a car horn, so it's a reference to that :)
@Last_Dance
@Last_Dance 11 ай бұрын
Turf Roof: Functionally, there are several advantages to having turf (grass) on the roof. We can bant mention that the roof cools down when the water in the peat evaporates in the summer. This is often called a "refrigerator effect", and is actually the exact opposite of what happens with other types of roofing. They heat up when the sun is at its worst. Peat also provides good sound insulation and thus helps to keep out the noise coming from outside. This noise reduction also comes in handy when it rains - even in the heaviest rain there is not so much as a sound from a sod roof. In addition, you do not get the same powerful water flow on a turf roof as on a roof covered with other materials. Peat absorbs a lot of water and thus the pressure is not as great on gutters and downspouts. The risk of overflowing gutters is therefore significantly less with turf on the roof. The peat also means that very little leaves and the like find their way from the roof into the gutters. In this way, you will less often experience that gutters and downspouts become clogged.
@John_1920
@John_1920 11 ай бұрын
13:57 The "u" in "Tut" is more closely pronounced as the "oo" in "too" than how she pronounced it. It's the Norwegian "Honk Honk" as in making car horn sounds to get people's attention and make them move away. It's a more indirect and not rude method of getting people to move than having to talk to them and ask them to move, or having to physically move people.

The colorful Instagram friendly houses. That has become a problem for people that live in those in Bergen and Stavanger. Cause some tourists have no respect at all and just walk into their gardens and there has even been incidents where tourists walk straight into the homes of people that live in those. So if you ever go to Norway and go to take pictures of those then please be respectful, and remember that Norway have very strict privacy laws so you might need to look at those first.

My grandfather snifft Schnupftabak. He was born in 1887 and died in 1968. Since then I never saw anyone doing this. I think it is only a thing in some regions in Bavaria.

Lol that white church wasn’t even a Stave church, just a regular church you often see out and about in the countryside🤣🤣🤣 That “village” is just your average farm or homestead out again in the countryside as it’s not the norm to have grass roofing in the cities. It’s a tradition, besides using certain rock/stone types, as roofing. It’s as simple as they used what they got or what nature provided.

you can kinda compare alaska to norway , they have approx the same latitude, which means that the weather and hours of daylight/darkness is approx the same. The difference is that we have the Gulf Stream in norway, this makes norway have milder weather compared to alaska

Norwegians do in fact "tut tut", but it is not at all that sassy lol It's more of a playful way of telling someone to move, and it's the imitation of a train flute. I think the sound would be categorized more as cute😅

Grass roofs are an ancient trdaition that is not necerrary today, execpt for traditioanal looks. It was used to absorbe rain and prevent moisture to penetrate the roof. Underneath, there were traditionally 7 layers of birch bark to further prevent the rain entering the house. Nowadays, there are many other ways to prevent rain entering your house, but this is a 1000+-year tradition. May I mention Americans knowledge about Eurpoan history? I'm quit sure native Americans had their ways in this respect. Yes, I am Noregian, and English is my second language.

Tyler, if you are considering a holiday in Norway. Now is a good time. The US currency holds a high value pr NOK now so you get ca 42% more money today (10NOK pr US dollar) vs the standard of 7NOK pr US dollar.

Cabins! Why do you have grass on the roof? This is done to insulate the cabin for the winter. And it keeps the cabin cooler in the summer! And if the grass gets too long, we throw up a goat on the roof!
