Another pretty good sitcom with David Jason is A Sharp Intake of Breath: a show which has largely been forgotten these days.

Loving your reactions to these episodes! Such a pleasure! :D Incidentally, I live fairly close to Doncaster where some of the filming took place. I've seen the 'shop' (it was a hairdressers, but not sure if it still is) on Lister Avenue, Balby. Very happy about that!

It was Five years between series 1 and the 2nd, David Jason is wearing a hairpiece at the back when it returns! And you get a lot more regular characters introduced, and episode 1 is a classic.

Good reaction kid, no matter how many times I watch these old shows they still make me laugh. If the people in the shop keep following you around you should turn round and say can I help you sir/madam? depending on who it is and see what they say.

From now on this show gets much better and additional recurring characters are gradually introduced. We're still a few episodes away from seeing the black widow! Mrs. Fer-fer-fer-Featherstone.

That's the last of the first series, but the second series gets even better. I can sympathise about eager store staff who seem to pounce the moment you step foot into the shop. Sometimes, you just want to have a look around to see if there's anything that takes your fancy. i.e. you want a bit of breathing space. Mind you, I've also had the opposite experience when you want to ask someone if they have a certain item and there's never anyone around to ask! Or, at least, those who are around appear to be busy doing other things.

KID: thats me everytime i go to the store, they always think am robbing. Do i look as if am someone that robs? ME: aye u do! :-P Most of my jobs have been customer based, and i wouldn't say i've had interesting interactions with them from memory, but prob down the road i will think of some. lol

I'm the opposite, I've been working retail/customer service since I was 17 and all 4 jobs I've worked at so far each have some of those memorable stories. One of my favourites that I talk to people about comes from the job I had previous to my current one, we're talking about 9-10 years ago and believe what you like, but I'm not making any of this up. Everything I am about to type actually happened: I was working in the café/restaurant of a department store. One day in the late afternoon, about 4-5pm, I'm just cleaning tables, minding my own business and this older gentleman beckons me over. Remember, everything I'm telling you is true Me: Good afternoon sir, how can I help you? Man: Yes, could you tell me where the Debenhams in Guildford is please? Me after a confused pause: Umm, you're sitting in it Man: Really? Me: Yeah, there's a 4, maybe 5 foot sign outside that says "Debenhams" Man: Oh. But this isn't Guildford though, is it? Me: Sir, I'm not being funny but I've lived in Guildford my entire life, that's about 23 years, so I think I'd know Guildford when I see it. Eventually I walk off out to the back and have a laugh about it with my colleague. About half an hour later, I see the man looking around for some more help so I get my colleague to sort him out. He comes back about five minutes later and tells me the man just accused him of being a paedophile. All I did was laugh some more.

I believe it is. It has the same, 'earthy northern', style of humour. Being 31 seasons, (with about 12 episodes to each season, I think...), it would take about a decade or so, if each episode was reacted to once a week!

Unfortunately, some people in the retail industry profile people the moment they walk into their store. Their inbuilt prejudices cause them to make snap decisions about who is or is not a threat to their stock. It's not just about racism (although that is often the principle trigger); it's also about a person's general appearance. For example, a young person wearing a hoodie, baseball cap and trainers is more likely to be tagged as a potential thief than a middle-aged person in a shirt and tie. I'm a middle-aged person who wears trainers, a hoodie and a baseball cap. Should I be worried when I walk into Selfridges? A very funny episode - I liked Granville's 'leg' skit near the start of the show which is a masterclass on how the most simple of ideas can be absolutely hilarious.
