It's lovely you enjoy this series, it's very Northern british, but brilliant writing by Roy Clarke and the fabulous acting of the cast make it a real gem, Ronnie Barker really was a genius... The shop was a real hairdressers in Doncaster that the BBC would take over and turn in to Arkrights store for filming the series, i think it's still a hairdressers now.

This series is a true time capsule. I remember watching this the first time it was shown in 1981 when it commanded huge ratings. Quality programme with fantastic script and actors. By the way, fig biscuits are known across the pond as fig newtons. Exactly the same product. They were big in the seventies and eighties. Compliments strong coffee really well!

Back in the late 70s/early 80s, my mum worked part-time in our local village corner shop (almost identical to Arkwright's but owned by a lovely lady lol) and there was one customer who actually did send their dog down the hill with a basket and a note for the shopping! I swear its true! The shop-owner had accounts for locals, so, the cost was simply added into the book you see. The dog would be given a treat and sent home with a basket of small goods lol. Simple days...

the scene at the start where the guys are piling in to get the cigs to get their nicotine fix was funny, as well as the karma scene with Granville and the guy in the car. and yea seen it coming with the honking lol The scene with Mavis hearing voices scene, was lol at that bit. Those trap doors are a f**kers though, i had to watch my steps at times when in NY when walking about first thing in the morning, when the shops/restaurants where taking in their supplies with deliveries at street levels,, even here in uk now and again. hahaha Yea where i stayed growing as a teenager, our local convienient store had what we call a "tick book", where if u were short and needed some stuff to get u by til you got paid or whatever, you can ask for "tick" they would put ur details in book and how much u owed, so next time you had the money u can pay it off!

The reference to the newspaper and the women in them was to do with the fact that some of the tabloid newspapers used to have a topless model on page 3. This is part of the constant quality of the programme. Great gags and observational humour that people can easily identity with. Onwards and upwards!

At the end when Arkright says PS Lord, remind our Granville to keep his trap shut, it was a double meaning joke, firstly "keep that trapdoor shut" and also keep your mouth shut, because in the north of England when someone wants to tell you to stop talking, they'll say " keep your trap shut" meaning keep your mouth shut, a very clever piece of writing in the script by Roy Clarke.

There is an inherent sadness in the show. Arkwright's afraid if Granville tastes life that he will leave and Arkwright alone. So Arkwright does go out of his way to clip Granville's wings. Ronnie Barker spoke of it in an interview once. Though he also did say that the comedy comes from the reality of life. This Nurse Gladys is the best. And hottest. She loves the boys and it does show. ✌️❤️☘️🇮🇪

Just as funny as the original series so I think you will enjoy this too. Best regards Mike
