Yes, In Car Race Cam was invented in Australia, by engineers and techs at HSV7, a cousin of mine was on that TV team, and he advised me, when I stuck a camera in the wing of a Sprintcar, being first to live link that back to a mobile control, back in '95. @@michaeljudd4319 Not the 'standard' camera, which were huge then and are huge now. It was called a 'mini' camera, about the size of a shoebox with somewhat lesser picture quality and small lens, plus a bigger box for the radio link to the helicopter that relayed back to the OB Truck. You could out-perform it with the analog cameras mounted on FPV race drones these days, let alone the digitial systems DJI now sells, without needing to relay.

The engine is the Australian Holden V8, in this VK version in 86 it was a 304 cube, slightly destroked from it's traditional 308 cube to fit under the five litre regulations for international Group A. Being under five liters allowed 500kg less weight under the regs.
@ethanearl
@ethanearl 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug it allowed a weight drop from 1400kg to 1325kg, so 75kg not 500kg. The 304 also got a double row timing chain and uprated rocker gear. There was also a new conrod very quietly homolated just before the 1986 bathurst race, apparently the HDT supplied them to the privateer teams but Perkins was denied access to the new rods until Larry jumped up and down so much about this that 2 sets arrived mysteriously at his workshop “without invoice”. Strangely enough the Grice/Bailey chickadee roadways team had these rods already installed before LP even knew of their existence!

An absolute legend of the sport, so dearly missed and we loved him every bit as much here in New Zealand as they did in his homeland. Whenever he jumped across the ditch for a race event or some other engagement as he often did, he was treated like an honorary Kiwi, he was respected and adored that much. A truly great Australian and will never be forgotten. An interesting aside you might not be aware of (and apologies if anybody has already mentioned this in the 600+ comments) his race number 05 was in reference to the 0.05% alcohol limit for drink driving, of which he was a strong campaigner against and every one of his cars since sometime in the 70's carried that number.

Peter Brock was known as "The King of the Mountain". Did you notice he often rests his arm on the door sill and drives just as hard. The VK was his favorite model of Holden (GM). The engine was a 308 ci naturally asperated engine de-stroked to 304ci and was originally designed (in the 60s) off the best bits of Chev, Olds and Buick engines.

@@paspax In 1985, a destroked version of the 308, known as the 4.9L or 304, was introduced to allow the VK to compete with a lower minimum weight (1325kg, a saving of 75kg) under the 4501-5000cc regulations of Group A touring car racing.

This was back in the day when the race cars were taken straight from the production line, stripped down and modified into a race car. The shell of this Commodore is identical to the normal family sedan. Going by the footage it looks as though the original dashboard was still there, albeit modified. Every year since, the cars evolved away from the factory model a little bit every year up until 2013 when they became like NASCAR with a tubular frame with stuck on panels just to look like a sedan. They might use a plastic grill or tail light from the manufacturer but that's about it. Everything else is built from the ground up. The current (and last) Commodore being raced is based on a front wheel drive V6 sedan, yet the race car is RWD with a V8. So that explains where they're at now..

I miss those days when they raced real cars. Go back a bit further than this and they used to change tyres with a jack and a wheel brace. None of these quick change brakes, if you ran out of brakes back then you just backed off a bit until they came back or they went to the floor and you had to stop (one way or another).

They do 120-130mph through the slow bits like the curves coming down the mountain. I have driven that section of road several times (doing the speed limit, not wanting to get booked) but the first time I came through there I couldn't believe how they ever did the speeds they did. My car was squealing the tyres at the speed limit. Granted I was staying on the correct side of the road and not using the whole road like they are doing, but they would be doing close to three times the speed I was going. Being it was a open public road I wasn't game to give it a blast through the racing line through there, although I was very tempted. There are apparently speed cameras on that road and I didn't know where they were hidden.

Race cam is an Aussie invention and transformed Motorsport to something taken for granted now. The first prototypes were massive cameras bolted to the roll cage and relayed pictures to the helicopter above following the car. Peter Brock was an intruiging fellow with many issues but he was and still remains the greatest touring car driver this country has produced. Unfortunately he passed away competing in a Targa road rally in 2006. Race fan or not, everyone knew Peter Brock. The whole country stopped in shock. I count myself lucky to have met him many times and never would he leave an event until every last autograph was signed and every picture taken. The 1986 Bathurst 1000km race was for cars in three classes Class A For cars of up to 2000cc engine capacity, it saw a variety of cars entered. Most numerous were variations of Toyota Corollas, with individual entries of a turbocharged Fiat Uno, a Ford Escort and a Nissan Gazelle. Class B For cars of between 2001 and 3000cc engine capacity, it featured the turbos; Mitsubishi Starion, Nissan Skyline and Volvo 240, but also included Alfa Romeo GTV6, BMW 323i, Mercedes-Benz 190E and Toyota Supra. Class C For cars of over 3000cc engine capacity. Apart from a strong presence of BMW 635 CSi, the swansong of the V12 Jaguar XJS, and the first appearance of a turbocharged Ford Sierra, it was the domain of the V8; Holden Commodore SS Group A, Ford Mustang and Rover Vitesse. Commodores ran 1 and 2 then the early Nissan Skyline then the Dick Johnson Mustang ( Fox body?) Peter Brock's Commodore only made it to fifth place that year.

Dick Johnson would also talk to the commentators and he use to come up with all sorts of funny quotes while driving at Bathurst and at other tracks. You are right, this was done during the race and at racing pace. The engine that was in this car was a Holden carburetor 304 V8 made here in Australia.

Another great one to watch IMO is "When the Lowndes Legend was Born" a great fight and pass that noone expected from a rookies first ever Bathurst. And the perfect follow up to it.. "In 2006 Craig Lowndes Wins First Brock Trophy" Craig Lowndes was Brocks Protogee, Brocky was his mate and his life coach, and when he passed, i doubt anyone (With the exception of Brocks family) was hit by it harder than Craig.. That years bathurst had a new trophy. the "peter brock memorial" and in a perfect moment of universal poetic justice, lowndes won it, probably one of the most perfect and emotional moments for all true v8 fans. Craig is one of the legends of v8 super cars, and both video's are worth a watch

Google will tell you everything you need to know about these cars and the way they, and the Bathurst 1000 have changed over the years. You can tell why Peter Brock was such a legend and why Australians were addicted to the V8 Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons, which were equally as spectacular. Glad you are discovering all this, an added dimension to your enjoyment. :-)

Kiwi here, although we have our own Supercar legends like Greg Murphy, none of them hold a torch to Peter Brock, at least in Australian Supercars. Obviously as far as Kiwis go Bruce McLaren is the greatest Kiwi Racecar driver. But in Australian Supercars, of all people, legend Australian Peter Brock is the biggest legend in the sport. The car was built to the international Group A touring car class. A certain number of the car had to be built to be eligible to race. Under the Group A class there were different wheel and tyre sizes and minimum weights depending on the capacity of the engine (turbocharged/supercharged engines had their capacity multipled by 1.4 back in those days). Holden had their V8 of 308 cubic inches since the mid 1960s. 308 cubic inches was 5.04L, which was just above one of the capacity limits. Holden changed it to 304 cubic inches (4.98L) to run a lower weight. It continued at that capacity until the late 1990s. 1986 was the second Bathurst race under the Group A regulations. 1985 was won by John Goss in a Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar XJS. 1986 was won by Allan Grice in his Commodore. Grice had done the first 100mph average lap of Mt Panorama in qualifying, IIRC. Grice/Bailey and Brock/Moffat raced in the European Touring Car Championship round at Monza (500km), where neither car Finished. Three VK Commodores raced in the Spa 24h round, with Brock's team fielding two cars - Brock/Moffat/Harvey finished 22nd, Lowe/Baigent/Bowkett finished 16th. Grice wa sjoined by a couple of European drivers in his car,which finished 23rd. The Bathurst 1000 would be a round in the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 1987, so it was modified to bring it up to the required safety standards, which included installing The Chase chicane on Conrod Straight. The new VL Group A Commodore won the first WTCC race at Monza in Italy with Moffat and Harvey at the wheel. They actually finished 7th, behind 6 BMW M3s, which were all disqualified because of body irregularities. Brock won the Bathurst round of the 1987 WTCC after finishing third, with the first two Ford Sierras being disqualified. That was his 9th win. Here is some highlights of Brock driving in damp conditions on slicks in 1987 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYOrcnyJpbeifMk

That V8 is an Australian designed, 308ci 5.0L Holden, the greatest sounding V8 engine of all time. It’s carbureted at this time and was later fuel injected around 1988. The rules at the time, greatly reduced its potential power output. They raced this engine successfully in this class for 20 years. The in car cameras were introduced in 1978.

1979 was the first time Channel 7 put the camera in the car for racing, at Bathurst No, he was racing here. They used to run multiple classes at bathurst, so when he's talkign about smaller cars, think Celica smaller ford and holden/gm makes with some Honda's tossed into th emix, so. he was busy :) The engine was a 308 Australian made V8. It's carb fed. The cars ran one make series tyres Bridgstone back then I think. and yes, slick tyres, wets for rainy days. These cars used to lift off a bit coming over the tip of the rise on Conrod straight and also on mountain straight on the way over its crest , so lifting off the pedal can save a bit of damage... the Newer cars, have a new track and no longer do this.. This can ran somewhere over 410 bhp.. clipped 170 ish Mph down conrod. hope that helps some..I miss the days when the racing was like this.

Brocky was a born natural driver. Could get into any car and immediately drive it flat out whether it be circuit racing or rallying in the dirt. He was one with the car. I think that car sold recently for around 1million Australian dollars. He started of making and racing open buggies on his parents farm when he was a kid. His first race car was an Austin A30 which he shoehorned a 6 cylinder under the hood. Because the engine took up so much room in the cabin area he mounted his driving seat where the back seat was. An A30 was about the size of a suzuki swift.

re: the Holden V8 engine sound - the Holden 5L engine used a different firing sequence to the Chevy (and Ford) V8, and gave it quite a distinctive sound. As for the engine spec, it had a capacity of 304ci to give about 4.98L, as under Group A regulations it has to be under 5L else it would have a weight penalty. Itv was an OHV design with big-valve heads, high compression pistons, roller rockers, twin-row timing chain, heavy duty conrods.and tubular exhaust headers. It was a carburetored engine, with street cars running a single 4-barrel Rochester while the race cars ran two big Weber twin-barrels.

Peter Brock won the Bathurst 1000 9 times. I remember he set a record lap time, in one race, on the second last lap. 1000km race at Bathurst equals 161 laps at an average time of about 2min 10sec or there about. 1000km = 621.712m. He was also a guiding light for a few up and coming drivers like Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes. I also remember one of the drivers(Mark Skaife ?) once said "anything can happen in a 1000km race, you can't simulate it in the workshop.". Peter Brock, Dick Johnson, Alan Moffat, Larry Perkins look up any of them, you wont be disappointed.

He was known for it even in the rain! We miss you Brockie. Oh, by the way, the elevation difference between pit lane and the top of the mountain is a bit over 800 feet. Ian he was racing at race pace going off the lap time (2.20 seconds) while he was talking. A flat to floor qualifying lap on qualifying tyres and light fuel load would have been around 2:14 - 2:16 seconds back in those days. He mentioned passing a Toyota Corolla, back in those days they ran 3 different classes of cars. Brocky while he was waving to the camera was doing probably doing around 280 kph (174 mph) down Conrod straight. The Corollas were running about 220 - 230kph down Conrod so there was probably 50-60kph speed difference between the classes. He was passing those slower cars all around the track including those spots you said were narrow while not lifting. Yes he was using heel and toe shifting and double clutching all day long. Brocky was so relaxed that if you gave him a beer and a steak he could have probably cooked it on the BBQ for you while he drove.
