Only the OG's know that actually Messi performed at his best in that game too. He created several chances for his teammates and they let him down. At times he used to dribble past 3, 4 players and advance but nobody would come forward to support him. In a way this was the poor tactic of the manager, who thought yes we have a 3-0 lead, let's go to anfield and we all will sit back and defend. They couldn't even do that properly and failed to score with that. 1 goal would've been enough for the qualification. it still hurts, how they bottled a place in one of the easiest UCL finals ever.

They for sure failed Messi during the Liverpool game, remember it like yesterday how their midfield got run over through the whole game and every Barca player looked to pass to Messi hoping he would save them again and he was just unfortunate as he was the only player that night who created chances for his team. Gave me flashback to Argentina, a team full of superstars who constantly underperformed relying on Messi to carry them.

That champions league match was sad to watch, Messi had the best season since 2015 i think, carrying the team every game, it was not his fault at all, he scored and assisted in the first match, even put an easy goal on Dembeles feet and missed it, in the 2nd game the defense was trash, the midfield was not even giving good passes, Messi had to go most of the time back to receive the ball too far from the goal pitch, if u see the images he was surrounded all the time by 5 or 6 guys, so how u can run 50 meters with the ball against 6 dudes? The teammates had to stand up and they didnt.

As a barcelona supporter, this liverpool fixture annoyed me so much. The team is in transition after peak barca but messi is dragging barca forward with such a dysfunctional team. This liverpool side was in conversation at the time by pudits as having the potential to be one of the best sides ever. So for messi to get barca to 3-0 is a miracle even in that game liverpool dominant the match(score doesn't reflect that). So to throw that away and the team to switch off defensively in the second leg was so enraging. (Fourth goal is a prime example look at the defenders.) Barca was still in the game at that point tied 3-3 in aggregate.

I was lucky enough to see prime Messi live in the Champions League back in 2011 (if im remembering right), im an Arsenal fan and when we beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first leg, honestly after Arshavin made it 2-1 i was bricking it every time Messi was near the ball (he killed us in the 2nd leg), in the end it was an incredible night

He didn’t played bad in that game. It's the other 10 player that failed him in that match. Those players couldn’t get the ball let alone giving it to Him. The few times he got the ball there was through balls produced by him but they couldn’t convert those into goals. The team lacked desire & tuning😢. That season Messi owned the whole Football - GOAT. ❤

Football is extremely psychological game because it is a game of few goals. 2/3 goals on average per game.. so you can imagine how much momentum can impact the final result; those moments of doubts and confusion. It can and it does change everything, especially in big games.

Over the two legs he had 3 big chances created. One for Suarez, one for Coutinho, and one for dembele. None of those chances were converted. Jodi was crying at half time while still being up by 2 on aggregate, and Valverde is awful when his teams are up with tactics as he asks them to sit back and pile up pressure. Messi against all odds got them a La Liga, CL semis and Copa del Rey final. All of which should’ve been won if his teammates did anything of value. Just one goal in would’ve taken them through on away goals. Just 1. And he created 2 big chances in that game (you could argue 3 is Jordi had a half decent first touch). He was slightly below his standard that game but the problem since Neymar’s departure till his last days in Barca has always been his team.

That second leg UEFA Champions League match, how Barcelona performed that day literally boils my veins 😡 I was so frustrated, my head was getting heated..I was so angry, I didn’t expect that disaster performance from the team, I really thought Barcelona will go through All the way to the final, because Messi did everything to make his team win that tournament but at the end his hard work all got wasted. Messi actually created so many good chances to score goals but his teammates all missed those chances 😢 if Barcelona would have won that game, they would’ve been in the final and they would have won that tournament 🏆 still when I think about that game, I still feels so angry.

The thing about that team is that quite a few of them were aging (Alba, Busquets, Suarez, Pique, Messi himself but he was obviously still insane) so they werent pressing and helping out in defence as much as Liverpool (Messi never did much but he doesn’t need to, when the rest of the team also cant cover for him with the rise of pressing football that becomes an issue), plus the fact that they weren’t as good by then (Xavi, Iniesta, Neymar etc. weren’t there by then, Dembele was 1.ridiculously injury prone as he has been throughout his career and 2.literally missed a golden chance to make it 4 in the first leg as others have said) and the fact that the Roma loss was still weighing on their minds (Alba literally cried at halftime in the second leg despite it only being 1-0 at that point, that is why Messi was talking about it. Keep in mind, that is Spain golden generation LB and Barca legend himself Alba having that reaction) and we got what we got. I had predicted Barca to go out at the time before the first leg. The signs were there. I just didn’t think they would still let it slip after the 3-0. As for prime Messi, many would say the 2012 version that scored 91 goals in the calendar year but he has consistently been insane so how do you even tell. Definitely not his fault, blaming Messi for that loss is even dumber than blaming Kane for Bayern losing the league this season, he did everything he could

I am a Tottenham Hot Spur fan, I took Harry Kane for granted because when he was up against the goal keeper he always scored and I just thought that if a striker is up against a goal keeper he will always scored. I learned a lesson when we lost Kane because we know have strikers when they one on one against a Goal keeper they dont guarantee that they will score .😓

this Barcelona team was new players, no real "identity", Messi is a good captain but the difference with the Puyol captain era is felt, there was also some other "smaller" off the pitch problems but most importantly changing playets too often with no real "base" being kept in terms of tactic and the roles of players it's a loss 4-3, the attack is not the problem, they scored more than enough, the problem is the defense taking 4 goals, even minus the corner taken quickly, because it's not "just a normal goal" where the defense didn't follow the tactic, sometimes genius happens, nobody can do anything about that, but even 3 goals concede is too much
