Some people have already provided some information about rallying, but here are a few more: A rally is composed of multiple stages, which are routes going from one point to another, not laps. In the World Rally Championship (WRC), there are usually around 20 stages, ranging from approximately 4 or 5 km to around 25 or 30 km in length. In typical circuit racing, drivers race on the same track with the same corners lap after lap, giving them a chance to memorize every single part of the track. However, in rallying, drivers can't memorize it because there are too many corners and too many stages. So, every rally has something called a "Recce," where every driver and co-driver will go through the stages at a slower pace (maximum 80 km/h, if I'm not mistaken) and they take "pacenotes" to describe the stage. During the actual race, the co-driver will read those pacenotes for the driver as they go. I suggest watching onboard footage to see how this dynamic works. In the actual race, each car will start with an interval of around 1 to 3 minutes from the previous one. In rallying, cars don't race side by side. The race is decided by who can achieve the quickest overall time aggregated from all of the stages. I love Formula 1 and other circuit racing, but these rally drivers are on another level. Even F1 drivers will say it. They require different skills, but I personally think rallying is crazier!

Rally cars race "track" is actually called a 'stage' and you go from point A to point B as fast as you can. Stages go anywhere from 6mi long to 19mi long usually, some stages are 30+ miles long.

also i don't know exactly why they blow a whistle when the car is coming but i'm guessing its to tell people on the sides to clear the track and make sure you safe before the car comes round.

RE: The whistles - the workers at these events carry whistles because it's one of the few things you can hear over the sound of the cars. I come from a road-racing background, where flagging/safety/communications workers will blow the whistle to get another worker's attention (when the worker's out of the station and across the road or something), and then use hand signals to give/receive messages to each other. From what I've observed at rallies, they do pretty much the same thing. One extra thing they use whistles for is to let the spectators further down the road know that a car is coming, so that they'll stand back a lil' bit.

Rally is not circuit race. It consists of timed Special Stages point A to point B which combined make 300 km in length (for WRC rally) (similar to F1 race distance). There are some so called Super Special Stages - which are short and usually on a circuit, or even parallel circuit (for duels), but they are just a small part of rally competition (as they are only 2-3 km long) and are made for large spectator crowds (for example the Mikolajki Arena stage in rally Poland (no longer on the calendar), old Lisboa (Rally Portugal street stage, the street stage in Tirer for rally Deutschland). Not all rallies on the WRC calendar have super special stages. Average stage length is about 16-18 km, but the longest stage was Guanajuatito (Rally Mexico) with almost 80 km of length. The rallies are usually single surface (either gravel (sometimes mixed with dirt and mud) (Finland, Estonia, Mexico,...) dirt/mud (depending on the weather), tarmac (Rally Croatia (my homecountry), Central Europe rally, Japan), snow-tarmac (Monte Carlo, except last season when there was very little snow), snow+ice (Rally Sweeden - actually the fastest rally on the WRC calendar - speeds reaching just under 200 km/h, or Arctic Rally Finland (which was a replacement for Sweden during COVID) - not to be mixed up with Rally Finland). But combined surface rally is not banned and there were some like that (Rallye de Catalunya sometimes combined tarmac and gravel stages), but rallies like that are extremely rare as it is very difficult to setup the car for both surfaces. Croatia Rally is also difficult as it consist of four different types of tarmac stages but it is still on the calendar.

...best drivers are in the WRC, but they compete in multiple categories - JWRC or WRC Junior with Rally3 class cars (Fiesta Rally3), WRC3 also Rally3 class cars (only ford Fiesta Rally3 for now), WRC2 (Rally2 class cars - Ford Fiesta Rally2, Škoda Fabia Rally2 and Rally2 Evo, Hyundai i20 N Rally2, Citroën C3 Rally2, Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, but also R5 class cars like Citroën DS3 R5, Citroën C3 R5, Ford Fiesta R5, Hyundai i20 R5, Peugeot 208 T16 R5, Škoda Fabia R5, Volkswagen Polo GTI R5, Proton Iriz R5) and the main "big boy" category - the WRC wich uses Rally1 class cars - the most powerful at this time (Hyundai i20 N Rally1, Ford Puma Rally1, and Toyota GR Yaris Rally1). All Rally1 class cars are hybrids (petrol+electric with so called hybrid boost). And the current World champion (in the main category), actually two years in a row is Finn Kalle Rovanperä (and he is also the youngest ever WRC champion), driving for Toyota. But there's a negative side of the sport - it can be lethal. Fatalities don't happen often but they do happen. Last season (2023) during pre-event practice session in Croatia Irish driver Craig Breen (Hyundai i20 N Rally1) was killed in an accident just a few days before the start of the competition. And Croatian organizers offered to cancel the competition but Craig's family and Hyundai team talked them out of it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3W6pKqoiKmXfdE Fatalities like that are not common, but they can happen. Not just drivers are in danger, but also co-drivers and spectators. For example in WRC season 2005 Markko Martin's co-driver was killed in an accident during Rally Wales. And also there were spectator fatalities also like in Portugal 1986 (one of two fatal accidents in that years that lead to banning of Group B cars - the other one was Rally Corsica (Tour de Corse) devastating accident that killed Henry Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto (Lancia Delta S4 Group B): "During the second leg, on Friday, 2 May, at the seventh kilometre of the 18th stage, Corte-Taverna, Toivonen's Lancia went off the side of the road at a tight left corner with no guardrail. The car plunged down a ravine and crashed on its roof. The aluminium fuel tank underneath the driver's seat was ruptured by the trees and exploded. The fuel tank was not protected by a skid plate, an item used mainly on gravel rallies, which was not fitted for the all-asphalt Tour de Corse. The explosion happened within seconds of the crash, and Toivonen and his co-driver, Sergio Cresto would not have had time to get out if they were still alive. The fire caused by the explosion was so intense that the Delta S4, built of fast-burning kevlar-reinforced plastic composite, was unidentifiable as a car afterwards. Both Toivonen and Cresto died in their seats. Toivonen left behind wife Erja (married in 1982) and two young children, son Markus and daughter Arla, while Cresto was single with no children."

Foto-shop? Go to Europe and watch the action. Most of the cars fearure red ,white, touches of green or Yellow to afford visibility -- thee is a lot of dust and sand. Obviously ,mos of the time Ralliee takes place on narrow, dirt or gravel roads. Snow, rain, racing during the night add to the competition. Skills, fantastic reflexs and a great co-pilot,always telling the driver, next turn right, followed by sharp turn left, 35 degrees. Etc. Rallies take place on roads, going through woods, desert, etc. A rally may rake place during 2 or 3 days, going through different roads, night and day. Accidents seldom take place, althoug the crowds are just there. However, Around 15 years ago, the super cars, Class B were far to fast. During the Portugal Rally, a famous driver lost control and 30 persons wre killed and dozens injued. The following month, the Champions driving a Lancia turbo and super- charged lost control and crashed downhill. Both lives were lost. After that, the Class B cars were banned . Apparently, thei were racing around 150 miles -- roads like that don't tolerate mistakes. Nascar and Indianapolis drivers ? Comparatively, that's nothing vis a vis Rallies.

The current champion, youngest ever and a double champ on top, Kalle Rovanperä took two old F1 drivers up for a ride and both of them said it was the scariest thing they've ever experienced. On top of the current best F1 driver Max Verstappen has said he'd never want to try Rallying because its too risky. Although, considering all, the sport is getting safer, but there are still some deaths, like Craig Breen last year. But that goes for all motorsports. Last death of a racer in it was in 1983, and after that there was two spectator deaths in the 90s, one of which was quite the accident that made them not run the stage for 10 years. (a car ran off into a group of spectators, 1 dead, 36 injured) Very glad to myself only having witnessed spectacular rollovers where nobody got hurt. And hopefully will get to keep it that way.

This is a very good one, please react to it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ22dZWoiq14qNE Rallies are made up of stages, which are closed (normally public) roads. Between the closed roads where they driver competitively, the cars need to drive on open public roads with normal traffic, so all the cars have to be 'road legalish' (rally rego allows more mods then normal rego, and you have more conditions that you have to abide by) At the start of a special stage (the closed off roads) there is a time control, and you have to check in on your exact minute. This is where co-drivers are very important. Cars have between 1 and 3 minutes between them, so multiple cars will be on the same stage, but with some distance between them. They only go on the same roads once, or at most twice. Co-drives read out the pacenotes; which were made during recce a day or two before. The crew drive the route at a slow pace and the driver calls the notes, and the co-driver writes them down. Fastest time over all wins.
