There's an old saying in rugby which goes: "You don't know what true friendship is if you never got drunk with the guy who sent you to the hospital". Possibly the best thing about rugby is its social aspect, as the so-called "third half" is paramount to the sport itself. And you can see it from all levels both amateur and professional. At the club level it's expected that the host team invite the visiting team for food and a pint and then prizes and drinking games for rematches are played out. And the variety of drinking songs is just fantastic too.

There are some issues with concussions in rugby but from a young age you are taught the correct way of tackling that reduces chances of injury to your neck and head. It still happens tough. I know In South Africa if you got more than 3 concussions playing rugby most doctors will tell you to stop playing rugby to prevent permanent damage. I played for about 20 years (since I was 7) and never received a concussion, and I was a Prop down in the scrums. Cracked my neck, dislocated my shoulder about 4 times one of which had some serious muscle damage, broke my ankle a few times, dislocated my finger, cracked my ribs, and tore my hamstring twice but never got a concussion. You are taught to tackle with your arms, shoulder and body and tuck your head and neck away to prevent injury when you start playing at 7, so most concussions in rugby are "accidents" or caused by the wrong technique. If you look closely to the tackles, you will see that most of them their head and neck are kept away and safe on the side of the person being tackled and your shoulders and arms takes most of the hit. Also, not wearing helmets and pads like in football actually helps against concussions as the human body is softer than pads, so you are cushioning your blow by hitting a body whereas with Football hitting a hard helmet against hard pads has no “give”, causing a sudden stop of your momentum with your head, and that’s what causes the concussion as your head stops instantly but your brain is still moving.

@AMANDA RAE. I loved playing rugby. The vast majority of those hits were legal. Great fun. EDIT: You cannot grab above the shoulders, 'head-high tackle'. If you lift the the ball carrier off their feet, the onus is on the tackler(s) to make sure that you don't push them past the horizontal, initiating a head-first to the ground or 'spear tackle'. Once you pass the ball, your opponent can get penalised for a 'late tackle'. Those tackles against the kicker, the tackler is already committed. That's up to the ref's discretion. Once you get the ball, you're fair game. Other than that, a box, mouthguard and a scrum cap is your padding. Cap is to protect from 'Cauliflower ear'. No play clock. No special teams etc. Players cover defence and offence. Once substituted you cannot return. Numbers 16 to 23 are the subs.

Scrums aren't competitive and there are no line-outs. Union there is no limit to how long a side can maintain possession. Players can compete for the ball after a tackle. Scrums, Line-outs are competitive. Scoring is also different. League, tries = 4, conversions =2, penalities =2 and drop goals =1. Union Union, tries =5, conversion=2, penalties and drop goals =3.

Taken from the world rugby rules: "A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders. A player must not tackle an opponent who is not in possession of the ball. " I suspect the instances where players were tackled after passing were allowed based on when the tackling player committed to the tackle. Plus "dummy passing" is a thing so there has to be some sense when it comes to tackling players who look like they might be about to pass the ball - since they may, in fact, not be.
@LADYRAEUK3 жыл бұрын
Yeah of course, I suppose if you’re mid tackle you won’t be able to stop in an instant! Some of those hits are so hard!
@tombratcher69383 жыл бұрын
Dummy kicking too. Because you dont have a "punt formation" and Everyone can pass or kick or choose not to, the tackler is entitled to commit to a tackle on the player in posession. At a rough guess i'd say 40% of these hits would be illegal under the current laws. Because of player welfare concerns - the game only formally went professional less than 30 years ago and rugby's laws were designed for amateur physiques, so brain damage in ex pros is a massive issue - the rules and sanctions around tackle legality are a lot more stringent than they used to be. and Unlike disqualification in the NFL if your team get a player sent off you dont get to replace them, you have to play the rest of the game a player short, so you don't really get so many Bontaze Burfict types. These days tackles have to be low- basically aim at anything above the bottom of the ribcage and there's a chance you'll give away penalty - and involve an attempt to wrap with the arms. Also players are ( or we were) taught to keep their head out of the tackle - so impacting with the other shoulder compared to a traditional NFL "big hit".

First there are no rules in rugby, only laws. If someone has the ball they are fair game with the exception of if they are in the air. Tackles need to be below the shoulders and not hitting the neck or head and if you do a dump tackle they can not beyond the horizontal. If there is a high tackle it can result in a yellow (10 minutes in the sin bin) or a red card. Concussion is unfortunately common, but usually only occurs during a high tackle. There are strick rules regarding concussion though, so if you get a knock to the head you get a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) if you're knocked out at all you’re off no arguments. To see you actually watching a live game would be amazing! You especially want to watch the all blacks (New Zealand) vs the Springboks (South Africa). Generally a very tough game and two of the heaviest teams out there, as well as being two of the highest-ranking. On tackling, if they are in possession of the ball, you may tackle, you cannot however if no possession has been had. The headgear you are referring to is normally worn by players that need some extra padding around their heads. Its also done to help limit bleeding. I don't know how well it protects their ears though (look up cauliflower ears in rugby). I don't think concussions are that big an issue though (stand under correction here), but physical injuries are commonplace, from cut eyebrows, bleeding/broken noses, and so on. A rather brutal example of what can happen in rugby can be seen in one of the school games in RSA where when being tackled, a child's legs both broke.
@MagisterMilitumBelisarius3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, just curious, but was that due to 'grass cutting'?. The terminology is used here in NZ for tackling straight at, or below, the knees. Banned now for the very same reason, and hyperextensions, of course.

@juliofranciscogomezstoppel18603 жыл бұрын
might have to do with the feeling of contact. Without armor, you can gauge how much force you are putting into the tackle, so is easier to bend and deflect, or simply relax to avoid dangerous colisions. With the padding, you don't get the feeling until you are fully invested into the motion, so you can't change directions or retract the impulse.

It's a fast game and there's some fine lines with what's considered legal in tackling. Most of these big hits are fair, I think. You asked about legality of tackling after the player has already offloaded - well in this instance it was acceptable as the ball had only just left the passer's hands and the tackler had already committed. You expect to get hit after a quick offload where you commit the opposition, so you can free up the receiver. A couple of these tackle look a little on the high side and may have been judged as high; neck and head is too high for a tackle. Also you can't tackle someone who is off the ground - so you can't engage if they're in the air, you can send them up off their feet as part of the tackle as long as you don't dump them down dangerously or drop them on their head/neck. There is a lot of responsibility on the tackler to ensure their technique is good and the opponent lands as safely as possible. Most of the guys in this video would have been up and playing again shortly afterwards.

Yes, there is a big problem with concussion in Rugby (there are two different games called League and Union, both have the same issues). In recent years they have tried to put in place ways to reduce concussions including head injury replacements and zero tolerance for head on head tackles. But generally speaking anyone can tackle anyone from the chest down if you wrap your arms around the opponent. It is more complicated but that's the gist.

Back in the early 90's, having just joined St John Ambulance as a first aider, I ended up as a volunteer physio/first-aider for a lower tier rugby club in Hertfordshire. One of the other guys in SJA was the official club physio and I volunteered to join him and learn and help. I remember one Saturday afternoon, a player got a serious bang on the head and was a bit dizzy. I tried to persuade him to go off, but he wouldn't. Only the ref can actually order him off. Anyway, he asked me what day it was - Big red flag! - then when the ref came over to check he was okay, he asked this player what day it was, and of course had it repeated back!! Yeah! I was a bit green back then!!!! A couple of years later, I'd moved to Buckinghamshire and, on an official SJA duty, I was covering a girls (10 - 18 year olds) rugby tournament. I remember going on to treat a sixteen year old who had hurt her knee. She was in floods of tears, not because she was hurt, but because her mum had told her than if she hurt her knee again, she (the mum) would stop her daughter from ever playing again. I was getting a "please don't tell my mum, please don't tell my mum" while I was trying to treat her. Fortunately for her, because she was 16, even though I have to document everything I do, I didn't have to tell her mum. If she'd been under 14 I would. Correct and a lot of these hits rather than tackles would lead to red cards now, or minimum of sin bin. There were far too many shoulders hits, high and no attempt to wrap the arms around and hold the player being tackled. Exactly why the rules were changed and new punishments given. As the host of this is an NFL fan, why is their tackling so poor? I know the focus is on dislodging the ball if possible but weekly you see such poor tackling where a player makes yards or even touchdowns because the tackler doesn't try to hold the man with the ball
