If the ball is dropped or thrown forward and the opposition get hold of it, the referee can stop the game for a scrum, but often play advantage and let play continue. He will shout, "Advantage!" at the the time of the knock on, but will call the scrum if no clear advantage is gained. The ref can do this for a penalty as well, but the advantage is usually longer. If he feels not enough advantage has been gained, he will blow the whistle and play will come back to the point of the original infraction for a kick at goal or to the side (touch) lines, where the team that kicks it out, get the throw in. Passes can be flat (Lateral), which isn't really made clear in the video. Kick passing has also become more common, where the ball is chipped forward, for yourself or another player to chase. The other player must be behind you when you kick, otherwise they are off side, but become active again once you pass them. The final point is that where you ground the ball for a try, is where the conversion kick is taken perpendicular from. If the try is between the posts the kick is from in front of the uprights, while if you score in the corners, kicks will be taken from out near the touchline. This makes the kick longer and more difficult. This is why you may see tackles being made behind the goal line, either to try and stop the score or make the points after more difficult. @@bigkevreacts No problem. I got, "Mark from the States," interested in rugby a few years ago. Unfortunately for him, his local team was ejected from MLR because of wage cap discrepancies. Look out for the Six Nations (Northern Hemisphere competition) England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and my team, Wales. This starts 2nd February. The Southern Hemisphere version, called the Rugby Championship, is scheduled to start sometime in August. This is played by Argentina (Los Pumas), Australia (Wallabies), New Zealand (All Blacks) and South Africa (Springboks). Fiji are joining in 2026 and there were talks of Japan taking part as well. These are all rugby union, because it is the most televised internationally. League is easier to understand for American Football fans because of the six tackle limit (downs) per team, no line outs, uncontested scrums and the ball going dead after the tackle. These don't happen in Union

Going after your opponent in a line out is a foul. Depending on severity or how blatant, it's a penalty or red card (instant sending off - the player is not replaced). So you play the rest of the match a man down. Why would you/your team want to risk that!?

Yeah they never explained red cards in the rules video. I didn't know you lost a player for the rest of the match. That's a big disadvantage.

​@@bigkevreacts there are other offences like tackling a player who has jumped to catch a high ball. You cannot tackle him ir her until both feet are back on the ground, because of the high level of danger. Additionally you must not tackle a player and make contact with head or neck. For these offences you might receive a yellow card (10 minutes off the field), or if there are no mitigating factors and a high level of danger, you get a red card, and you are off permanently, and face possible penalties after tge game. There is a new regulation that you can be sent off with a yellow card, but the off-field officials can review it and upgrade it to a red if they deem it to be appropriate.
