Yeah the bakery dude was a bit quick to claim Haribo to be Danish, we do eat a lot of it, but it's actually from Germany.

I also hear they say Haribo is German. I think what he is trying to communicate is, that he buy and ship them from Denmark. Haribo Produktion do have a factory in Denmark, so these exact backs of candy may very well have been produced in Denmark.

I was born and raised on a farm only 200 meters behind the mill.. Dybbøl Mølle.. And we used to bake all the cookies in the video and many different cakes from The Sønderjydsk Kaffebord. The southernjutland coffeetable. They started it up after the southern parts were lost to Germany in the great war of 1864, which took place on the battlegrounds around the mill. It was shot down twice in two different wars against the germans. After the war it was forbidden to speak danish, to fly our flag, to gather in groups. Our boys and young men were forced to fight on the German side in Worldwar one in Russia and France as canon feed! It lasted until 1920 when we got the chance to vote ourselves back to be danish again and we did🇩🇰👏🏼 We could however gather in what we call a forsamlingshus, a gathering house, where they danced, they did plays, and they invented the coffeetable with an exact amount of cakes, and you had to try every one of them. There were 7 kinds of danish pastry, 7 different kinds of layer cakes, 7 kinds of cookies 7 kinds of other pastry cakes, and many more. To gi with all that cake, there was enormous pots of coffee.. And as it was also forbidden to drink alcohol, they just put snaps in the coffee and soon everybody was jolly and sang and danced😁 The snaps thing id called a kaffepunch. You put a nickle in the cup, then pour on coffee until you don’t see it no more. Then pour in schnaps until you see it again!! That’s a real kaffepunch 😁 I still make sønderjysk kaffebord on occation and it’s considered rude and insulting to the hostess, if you don’t try at least one of the each, whenever the trey passes around the table😂 I would very much like to go to Solvang some day❤️

I'm sorry Charlie.. if you think the food they serve is Danish... It is not. As a Dane who has visited both the bakery and the that restaurant in Solvang. I / we talked to the same man as in the video, the masterbaker and the mayor. I would say that it is almost an insult to Danish cuisine. IT IS NOT DANISH FOOD. You do NOT serve "apple slices" together with Mediterranean sausage..!!! Medisterpølse is served with potatoes and a thick sauce, as a main course. Apple slices are used as a snack/dessert. But the buildings, the museum, the shops and all the souvenirshops are beautiful.

It's really funny how, even though it was founded by Danes, this place looks like a theme park based on Denmark, much like the British Village Niji-no-Sato and the Netherlands themed Huis Ten Bosch in Japan. I think it's because everything almost looks too newly painted and pristine, and some things that are obvious faux facades. It's cute though, and a bit silly

Scandinavia, is Denmark, Norway and Sweden The Nordics, are Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland (fun fact: Scotland has been entertaining the idea of joining The Nordic Union, after Brexit 😊) Solvang, looks like DK in the 1800's and like some of the 'old cities centers' around DK now, but we have evolved since then 😉 I promise ❤ The background music sounds more 'germanized' than DK folk music... but him playing the accordian, was authentic enough 🇩🇰 Dybbøl Mølle is pronounced with 2 syllables, but not quite as distinct as he does...he is not Danish, but he does 'do Danish' very well. The baker is definately Danish, though! The tinned cookies are authentic, Danish import. Huge wheat cookies dipped in chocolate ❤ The braided heart on the wall, is a Christmas heart.. You do not eat sausage and æbleskiver at the same time!!! One is a lunch meal, the æbleskiver are a Christmas eat with warm mulled wine ✨️ hello from Denmark 🌸

It is because what is now known as Skåne in the southern tip of sweden was called Scania by the romans. The southern tip sweden has been home to the danes for a long time, it is only relatively recent it became part of sweden. So there is a geographical Scandinavian peninsula and a cultural/political Scandinavia. The fins are a whole different migration into Finland from the Ural region in Russia later on that is why they have a different language roots than the rest of Scandinavia. Where as Scandinavian languages is rooted in the germanic language branch.

17:17 is a "julehjerte" (christmas heart), they're a favourite to make yourself to decorate your tree and also windows and walls with, made from paper you interlace, on top is a "nisse" scandinavian mythical creature, mostly similar to elves, but not the same, and around is of course 2 flags (Danes and also the rest of the nordics are VERY fond of the national flags, but it is not seen as a nationalistic symbol as in most countries, rather a festive symbol), and then there's a lot of pine branches and sheaf (many people still buy sheaf to put up for the birds) 17:36 "Hvor der er hjerterum er der husrum" = "when theres a place in your heart theres a place in your house". 2nd "Når nøden er størst er hjælpen nærmest" = "when the need is greatest, the help is the closest". 3rd "For lidt og for meget fordærver alt" = "too little and too much spoils (the soul/spirit/ethics/decency)" 4th one I can't make enough out of to recognise. 5th is "Den der gemmer til natten, gemmer til katten" = "He who saves for the night, saves for the cat" (literally meaning that if you leave out food, the cat will eat it) 6th is "ligeved og næsten, slår ingen mand af hesten" = "almost and nearly doesn't knock anyone off the horse". 7th is "en fugl i hånden er bedre end ti på taget" = "one bird in the hans is better than ten on the roof". They're all old danish proverbs/sayings

I visited Solvang when I was in the US years ago. I was I the US for a month and it was about after three weeks in the US that we visited it. I was very funny to see danish names on the shops, and all the roads and squares were named after danish cities. Also, they sold danish stuff. Us Danes always go a little bit nuts, when we see something about our country in other countries (Just look at the comment section of this video for an example😀). But, the resemblance quickly disappears and seems a little touristy. Also, the foods and many other things are very americanized, which I am not against, the city is after all in the US and it would be unlikely that they didn't assimilate a bit. But, it would be a mistake for someone to visit Solvang and think they have experienced Denmark. But, it was definitely interesting to visit as a Dane and they seem really proud of their heritage. It is a good taste of Denmark, but not a full picture.

It was a nice visit. When people realized we all were Danish they started asking us about our heritage, linage and all that. Which was quite fun, because my family is about a 1000 years old, and I know we've got members on just about every continent. We actually ended up meeting an older gentleman who, if I did my research correctly, is a VERY distant relative of mine 😊 It was a nice couple of days. Yes, Denmark is a part of Scandinavia. I'm not entirely sure why, but it could be argued that the Scandinavian pinensula streches down to Denmark, just a small bit of water seperating. Or it could be for historical reasons, parts of southern Sweden used to be a part of Denmark... The houses seems a bit off to me, the idea of wood and clay combined is that the wood makes up the structure and the clay is just to fill up the gaps, it looks to me that it's mostly decorative there, possibly made of concrete, so no real need for the wood. The heart thing is a typical Christmas decoration thing, made from two sheets of paper with different colors, you hang it in the Christmas tree. It's kind of like a basket and you put candy in it

Scandinavia can mean two things, the Scandinavian Peninsula, and the Scandinavian People. Most people will assume you mean Scandinavia as a culture, meaning Norway Denmark and Sweden, as we all speak similar north germanic languages and all share a lot of common culture.

That snap he shows is what he means specifically.. The cookies having "consistency" (being consistent) to one another is an obvious :P

Danish. Live in Copenhagen and have been to Solvang❤ ! Maybe back in 1911, when the town was founded, it was how small town Denmark looked like. For the last 40+ years it´s just been a cute and nice tourist trap! If you come to real Denmark, expecting that..., your gonna be disappointed 🤣 ! Traditions are good, but Solvang has been Americanized. Today Solvang has little or nothing to to do with the real deal 🇩🇰😀🇩🇰

Actually there's also the small town of Elk Horn, Iowa, founded in 1901 by Danish immigrants. It has an image of "Denmark on the Prairie". BTW, no Dane would ever eat sausage with æbleskiver and jam. They're two different meals. Guess it's been americanized. Lots of Americans can't get their food fat enough.

Dear Charlie Thanks for your reaction to this video … although I had a hard time not getting annoyed by the music in the background that was so NOT Danish … ;-) As a Dane I personally was there in 2005, with my ex-wife and our kids. Friends living in California took us there on a day-trip. I must admit that it was an interesting experience and a very nice place to visit, even though of-course it‘s a very Americanised version of Denmark … and not really refecting the 2024 Denmark 🇩🇰 I think you should go visit Solvang, Charlie, but then also hop on a flight to the real thing = flying to København (Copenhagen) to compare both places for yourself. But come in late Spring, or during Summer or in early Autumn, as the weather in Denmark is NOTHING like Southern California year round … ;-)

I liked this presentation of Solvang, which have been shown i national television in Denmark. Of course the cusine have been customed to the American taste, the cusine in denmark have also change a lot since 1911, surely not all to the better because of economic reasons. But I get the feeling of cosiness, "hygge" which Denmark is all about. Thanks Charlie, I hope you take a tour to Solvang og to Denmark some time.

Scandinavia is a cultural region, not a geographic region. The Scandi nations are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden -and are such due to having tied cultural roots throughout history with derived languages and at some point even been under a common monarch rule. Everything outside of DK-NO-SE (Scandinavia) is referred to as Nordic Countries, which include the Scandinavian countries as well as Finland and Iceland (and ofc Greenland and Faroe Islands by proxy due to them being under Danish Kingdom rule).

In regards to the whole “is Denmark part of Scandinavia” A couple of points; First and foremost - there is a difference between the geographic Scandinavia and the cultural one. While it is true that the peninsula is a certain area - there are still many areas outside the peninsula which are culturally Scandinavia or influenced by it, including Islands like Iceland, the Faroese Islands etc. It is my understanding that Finland, despite having some swedish-peoples, are actually a different culture compared to the rest - their language is not similar to the rest etc. So I think this is why we have a tendency of not being very “large” in including Finland, but including Denmark which is very culturally similar to Sweden and Norway. Furthermore, history needs to be taken into account. When you state that Denmark is not a part of the peninsula, this is solely based on the modern borders. But if you look back in time, Denmark has very much been a part of the peninsula. Much of the southern Sweden was Danish until relatively recently (Copenhagen, the Capital, is litterally as close to Sweden as possible) - Norway was a part of Denmark for many, many years - and Denmark also lead the Calmar Union, which encompassed the whole Peninsula. So Denmark has almost always been a significant presence on the peninsula - something which is now continued through the many organisations and cooperation between the countries.

The modern usage of name dates back to the pan-Scandinavianist movement in the mid-19h century. And at that time Finland was occupied by Russia. But words change over time, and in the long run it makes sense to redefine Scandinavia to include Finland and Iceland, or perhaps we should just stop using the word Scandinavia.
