@dutchman76233 жыл бұрын
There is a different principle behind it. All protection anyone uses is there to protect you against your own actions. A welder protects his own eyes with dark glasses against the light he/she produces while welding. Nobody else in the workplace has got to wear them, and for light and sparks a danger zone is market out for those others. A motor biker wears a helmet to protect his head when he/she makes a mistake and falls or collides, pedestrians do not wear helmets to defend themselves against motor bikers. A safety belt is used by a driver to protect him/her against their own mistakes while driving, Pedestrians, bicycles of motor bikers do not use them to protect themselves against cars. A bicycle helmet is exactly the same! No cyclist gets seriously injured by his/her own actions. Only when you ride at high speed, that's why wheelracers wear them, during their exercise. You are not supposed to defend yourself against all danger caused by others, that is impossible! How can a pedestrian defend against trains? It is the train company that has to secure the crossings, make sure everyone is safe, prevent to such an extend that they can say: We have done everything to prevent accidents. A bicycle helmet protects you against slowly driving cars, not fast cars, not trucks, not buses, not trains, not yourself. And that's why we are not willing to use them.

it's also very likely a cultural thing because riding a bike was already a huge thing at the start of the 1900s. combining that with smaller distances to be traveled for working and living compared to the US, it just made a lot more sense to focus on bikes instead of horses or cars. They require much less space and upkeep so anyone can have one. Bike lanes exist next to roads as another way of safekeeping cyclists (as well as making biking commutes more convenient.

Another important factor is, that most car drivers are also cyclists in the Netherlands, so we know what it is to cycle and how vulnerable cyclists (and pedestrians) are. More than 30 years ago, I myself was hit by a car while cycling. Although I had only a lot of bruises on my arms and legs, I drive very carefully on streets where you have to share the space with cyclists and pedestrians. One of the other factors that makes drivers of motorized vehicles is that bicyclists and pedestrians are a "protected class" when it comes to road incidents and even in the instance where they are 100% at fault it can still mean the driver of a motorized vehicle is potentially 50% liable (it's the called the 50% rule) for material damages and injury costs. For kids under the age of 14 involved in an accident this 50% defaults to 100% for the other party, making drivers of motorized vehicles extra cautious. The only exception to that rule is when the driver of the motorized vehicle can show there was force majeure in play but those instances are extremely rare.

eh, the impact of this (often misunderstood) law is overstated. the real reason is that by and large, the dutch generally design the built environment so that bikes and cars are not forced to coexist in situations where they're incompatible with each other. people will tolerate driving behind someone on a bike for a block or two in a neighborhood street but not so much if they are forced to slow down from a higher speed on a main road and the reverse is also true.

Society has gone super-overprotective and by helicopter parental monitoring since 9/11 to a point where kids aren't even allowed to play outside anymore in many US areas. Another issue seems to be the cool factor somewhat as well. The Dutch just never went on to that bandwagon that much when it comes to riding a bike. Upstraight bikes are slow and safe anyway. In Belgium, the infrastructure for bikes isn't that great either but still, no helmets. It's a typical American thing that has been exported somehow but just not everywhere. Extra fact is that in the Netherlands traffic laws more or less protect Both cyclists and pedestrians. Motorized traffic partisipants know this. And the ones ignoring it and causing accidents are in to big problems In 1935 article 31was added to the duch traffic laws always protecting the weaker traffic partisipants/cyclists and pedestrians. At this moment the article number is 185. Judges in the present interpretation will maybe look at the behaviour of cyclists and pedestrians but in most of the cases judgment wil still be in favour of the weaker and slower traffic partisipants. This is an extra motivation for motorized traffic users to slow down and let in this case the cyclist go first to prevent getting crushed in the lawsystem.

Wearing helmets was something 'pushed' by car owners who wanted no special roads for bicycles and when they where forced to mix a helmet would help. Research shows helmets will help (a little) but other 'dutch' habits help way more a important one is that we sit up more and can see and be seen more and most important interact with others with accepted signals. Also lights and reflectors do more for safety than helmets. This combined with the points made in the video and road design and laws do much more for safety. Wearing helmets is obvious for people other than the Dutch. For me, seeing people with helmets, would look weird. Immediately I would think „expats" or „tourists" . As of age three or four Dutch children get their first bikes. We are capable drivers because of years of experience. When I was twelve years old I had to go to junior high, at the other end of the city. That was a half an hour drive. We would bike in groups. At rush hours (between eight and nine o'clock AM and between four and five PM) hundreds and hundreds of youngsters in Rotterdam are commuting to/from school. Regardless of the weather. I biked in rain and in snow storms. It is as one of the people interviewed says: bikers are vulnerable, so car drivers will (must) care for them. Whenever I see youngsters on their bikes, bikers in general, I will mind my speed, lower it. I don't want to inflict injuries to bikers. Unfortunately in other countries, car drivers are rude to bikers and also they have given priority over bikes. But car drivers often forget that whenever they step out of their cars, they are vulnerable pedestrians themselves. And yes, we have a perfect infrastructure, where room is made, biker lanes, specially for bikers. I seldom see accidents with cyclers. I once had a near accident, but that was a foreigner who didn't respect the biker lane. He turned right, without checking thoroughly, crossing my biker lane. I shook my head..... „tourists..." Greetings from 🇳🇱

His video shows how limited his knowledge is. The reason is wrong. In the USA and many other countries, there where a lot of people cycling and also without helmets. Where in the Netherlands, people kept bicycling when the car became popular, other countries stopped. The roads changed and because the car was causing many accidents, the Netherlands started to work on a safer infrastructure, where in countries like the USA, they just said that riding a bike was dangerous and it is for kids. So danger, do helmet! And whit that stupid conclusion, they started to wear a useless helmet! Most people are so stupid, that they think that a helmet is safer. Only they wear it on the one place, where head injuries is lowest! A car and in home are way higher risks to get a head injury! But not one crazy person that wears a helmet on a Nike, wears one in a car or in home! To stupid to know the facts! Tgry also have 60% higher risk to get in an accident by jyst wearing a helmet on a bike! It is way safer to ride without, than wear one.

The reason why the Dutch don't wear helmets is because they think they are God's only and best creation. Also they don't give a ratt's ass about traffic rules. Cyclists learn from a young age to ignore traffic rules. Red light? Forget about it. Just cross the street. Don't mind the cars. Having lights on your bike when riding in the dark? Hell no, lights are for babies. Who cares if an oncoming cardriver can't see you? The guy at 5:00 min says that car drivers are also cyclists and that is why they now how to behave in traffic. But that is not the main reason. The actual main reason is that in case of an accident between a cyclist and a car driver the car driver is always to blame, no matter how irresponsible the cyclist behaved in traffic. Only if the car driver can 100% prove that he or she was at fault there may be chance to get acquitted but even then you may still to pay for some damages. This sick law must have been invited by the cyclist maffia. End of rant.
