A lot pf Flemish people would love to reunite because after 200 years of trying things don’t work out 😌 we are bankrupt, North and South Belgium have a lot of Cultural differences and the Netherlands has always been our better big brother when Flanders would love to learn from them but Wallonia is a lazy old Uncle who doesn’t want to work or develop. The main reason is the difference in culture that resulted because of Calvinism in The Netherlands vs Catholicism in Belgium. Even though the hold of religion has seriously waned in recent history the long hold it had on a society or a culture does form the way it acts. This results in the Dutch being more sober, direct, concise and strict. The Belgians are more lavish, regional, reluctant, tend to bend or circumvent the rules and they mix and match a lot of differences (and that goes for both linguistic parts). What also very few seem to understand is that, even though the linguistic split and joining other countries seems logical at on th first sight, is that this region since long has been relatively combative and fought for it's independence. Yes, because of it's small size compared to other European regions, Belgium never really was a military match to other and far bigger and politically influential nations. However... despite being dominated and ruled by other countries, Belgians have always been relatively stubborn as well as prone to erode such a rule from the inside as well as actively resisting to such rule and domination. In many ways Belgians are set on their freedoms and they don't mind others having theirs. That's why it's hard to unite Belgians explicitly for something, and far easier against something. When you want to 'rule' Belgians you can, but don't ever think it will be an easy task, because you either rule with them and with all the diversity that entails, or you rule against them and find out just how stubborn they can be.

6:30 the guy in the middle is Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Even though his grandfather already united Flanders with Burgundy by marrying the heiress of that county, Philip added most of today's Benelux (but Frisia and Liege) and Northern France to his territory. It's told he wore only black from the day his father, John the Fearless, was murdered by the Dauphin of France, Charles (later, king Charles VII). That reason is maybe untrue, but still, he launched a fashion that was going to last for his whole reign. The fashion was also to extravaganza to show power and wealth. That explains the big haton the most powerfull man around... and as long your shoes, as long your... well :) Little detail in the 80 years war split: if the south was as rebelious as the north, the religious extremism from both sides pushed them back in Spain's arms after Philip II appointed his nephew, Alessandro Farnese, as governor. He was both military talented and moderate as a ruler. In no time (and a few battles won) he managed to convince the southern provinces to give him their support... eventually, his success and popularity frightened Philip II who feared he could claim the crown of the Netherlands for himself, so, he removed him (there is no indication that Farnese himself had such ambition. So, let's say it: it was pure paranoia and/or jealousy) Point is: the south remained under the Habsburg rule not only undrr duress, but also by will and fear religious extremism from the calvinists would hurt them if they were to take power over the whole Netherlands...

Let's be more accurate and complicate things even more: Besides there being a Noord-Brabant (NL) and South Brabant (BE) in the situation you described accurately, there also is a Netherlands Limburg and a Belgian Limburg. While the Belgian Limburg is in the North - North Eastern part of Belgium, its Netherlands counterpart is The Netherlands most South -South Eastern province. Oh, and Luxemburg is not only the name of a country on its own. In Belgium the province closest to the country of Luxemburg is also named Luxemburg. So Luxemburg is both its own individual country as well as the name of a Belgian province.

The Netherlands are largely Protestant, Belgium is largely Catholic, Flemish or Walloon; those religious facts are not that important nowadays, but they were in the early nineteenth century. And cultures deriving from a Protestant or Cathlolic background are still pretty different. If Belgium was still Dutch, then the Netherlands would have to be a trilingual country; there are 4.5 million French speakers in Southern Belgium plus, largely, Brussels, and let's not forget the 75,000/80,000 German speakers of Ostbelgien along the German border. And do the Flemish really speak Dutch? As a French speaker I'll let others decide on that, but I know that I can more or less understand the Flemish (provided they don't use too much of a local dialect), when I usually hardly get a word when confronted to "real" Dutch from the Dutch people.
@WikkeSchrandt2 жыл бұрын
I'm a Dutch person who happens to speak French, and just wanted to note that the Flemish really speak the same language we do. It's like what Quebecois is to French; somewhat odd and slightly different, sure. But mostly mutually intelligible and without a doubt the same language.

There is an independist movement in Flanders but almost nobody there wants to be Dutch, though they speak a similar language (Flemish being a different kind of Dutch). As for Southern Belgium (Wallonia and largely Brussels), where French is spoken, the Dutch culture is definitely a foreign culture; the Walloons don't even want to be French except for a very small minority of "rattachistes".
