You can visit the village and the church at the top, there's also a story where it was their that the King Henri IV authorized (after a meeting there ) the expeditions to discover the North of the New World with Jacques Cartier which is now Canada and USA. 11:10, it was one of the worst nightmares of the French Goverment and People, France was kinda saved from bombs except in Normandy, le Havre, Dunkirk... but a lot of people tried to save the monuments and arts, Jacques Jaujard was the director of the Louvre Museum during WW2. Thanks to him, all of the masterpiece of the Louvre were saved and hidden in all of occupied France in caves and not in Germans hands ! 12:36, yes it's a bridge for water. The Romans build it to bring water to the city of Nîmes which is really impressive because of how many romans buldings there's is. It's the Rome of Gallia (previous name of France) 15:18, this is Dune du Pilat near Bordeaux, it is the biggest sand dune in all of Europe. Thanks for reading, and Vive la France Eternelle ! 🇫🇷

They are basically structural supports that taper and narrow towards the top. They're used to mitigate the horizontal forces in arches and vault ceiling constructions by diverting them outward and downward at an angle. They convert the outward horizontal forces into forces going at an angle, and then convert that onto a downward force. They are basically big heavy supports moved outside of the building, allowing the walls to be much sleeker in construction and allowing for huge glass stained windows so typical of the huge gothic cathedrals. In this case they are used to reinforce the retaining wall built to support the weight of the massive constructions on top of the mont-saint-michel.

you can go to the top of the Mont St-Michel and visit most of the inside for like 10$. They removed a lot of the sand and made a clean and safe road to cross even with the tide. I've been several times and once the tide came while i was visiting. Once out it was surrounded by water You can pay a bus ticket or walk 15min and take awesome photo.

9:20 The region in which the Mont Saint Michel is located is known for its really important tides throughout the day. So the island is accessible by car / foot only for a few hours before the road gets covered by water again. This is another fact that makes it so special. Some of my family members went there a few times and during the tourist season, it is extremely crowded because of how popular it is for its small size. If you can afford it and you are lucky enough, I recommend renting a room for the night, then you'll be able to visit the beautiful streets and cathedral when all the tourists are gone (and take beautiful photos of the sunset). There are still people living on the island but the street will still feel empty after how many people you will have seen during the day.

Walled cities were obsolete by 1600, so most of the walls and towers were taken down to recycle the stones. Caen in Normandy was badly destroyed by Allied bombing, but not Bayeaux, where the tapestry was kept. Carcassonne is one of the few walled cities still intact.

*restored carcasonne was in ruins and was restored in XIX century thanks to the work of an great architect Viollet-le-duc, because the walls was in peces and people used the stone to build houses (so he destroys houses to rebuild). The restoration was great but very critisized by archaeologists because it's not very respectful of timelines (gradient of Roman era -> today = not perfect).

Ah! Le Mont Saint-Michel or Minas Tirith! Its a stunning place to wander around and is the grander counterpart of St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall. The area around the island is VERY tidal. The sand is known for being rather dangerous as there are quicksand areas and the tide comes in quickly.

Connor, I will explain: to access Mont St. Michel you have to wait until the tide goes out... then you can walk the causeway out to the island. It is amazing out there... beautiful. As I child I fell in the sea around the Mount, and was nearly drowned. I was pulled out by an elderly Frenchman, to whom I owe my life as a 5 year old.

Aiguille du Midi: the path you saw is not to reach the mountain but to leave it. It is the beginning of a ski trek which goes down from the top of a mountain to the valley below (from roughly 3800m to roughly 1000m), most part is on top of a glacier. Mont-Saint-Michel: what you saw is sand. It is a rather flat bay, so with the tide, the water leaves and the island is surrounded by sand. For WWII and the bombings, it was more on the north part of France (Brittany, Normandy) where towns and villages were destroyed. Hitler ordered Paris to be destroyed just before the allies arrived but the German governor of Paris refused to obey the destruction order. If you consider the level of destruction during WWII, in order you have USSR, Italy, Japan, France, the UK and Germany. Each year, still active bombs from WWI and WWII are found in France, either in the fields by the farmers or in towns when they need to dig for public works, for construction. Usually, they evacuate the neighborhood and the mine-clearers take care of it.

you can visit the abbey of mont saint michel (which is in normandy by the way), it's a marvel!! Etretat is also in Normandy and the cliffs are magical and offer you breathtaking views. visited the Normandy American Cemetery and it is impressive. you feel overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the place and so humble. If you go to Normandy, don't miss: Bayeux, Caen, Rouen, Honfleur, Cabourg and so many others... the Dordogne is missing in the top! If you love history: the Perigord Noir is unmissable and majestic.

Carcassonne wasn't bombed because it's in the southern half of the France. WWI battlefields are in the northern (battle of Somme) and eastern (battle of Verdun) France. And WWII bombing was essentially in the northern half of France wich was occupied by Nazis. As for the southern half it was under Régime de Vichy - French gouverment which collaborated with Nizis but stayed somewhat independent till the liberation in 1944. So northern half suffered both during Nazi's offensive in 1940 (especially Dunkerque), during liberation in 1944 (especially Normandy) and from the air force operations against Luftwaffe all through 1940-1944.

I live in Annecy and only the old town is pretty, the rest is an average town like any other. The region is very pretty, the lake is very cool in the summer for swimming but despite all that, the proximity of Switzerland makes it a city where life is much, much too expensive ... The price of real estate is one of the most expensive in France. When you live there for a long time, the old town and the lake are not as interesting as a tourist... Annecy is very good for vacations, living there is another story....

Actually, unfortunately, France did lose tons of precious monuments like these in both world wars. In WW2, allied bombings killed over 90 000 civilians and destroyed from the ground up a few cities. It's sad, but fighting in the most modern war is disaster on a country as rich and history filled countries like France or Italy.

Then there are the special cheeses and wines: each region has its own speciality dishes, which are out of this world. In the summer is can get very hot indeed in the south, in the Riviera.
