Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through KZbin videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. 11:38 the hole above his head is the air intake for the engine....Normally a piston just pulls air into the engine on the down stroke... but F1 cars have turbos so that is effectively pumping the air through that hole and into the engine at pressure. (A compressor) This compressor/pump is driven by the exhaust gasses, which turns a tubine on the other end of the same shaft, as they leave the exhaust... There is now a motor on the shaft between the compressor and turbine so the turbo can be spun up using electric. (No lag at all) The big intakes you are pointing to are actually radiators and oil coolers for the car. They cool the water circulating round the engine... or the water which may be used in an intercooler.. or cool engine oil. Or even oil in hydraulic systems for gearboxes etc.

Petrol engines also require air to mix with the fuel to burn properly which is the reason for the intakes. It can also help with aerodynamics and cooling the engine

The 2014 F1 cars had "sex aids" because the FIA (the people in charge of F1) wanted to lower the noses for saftey reasons in a T-bone crash. However, the rules only said that a certain amount of the nose had to be that low. The engineers want high noses as it lets more air through and helps create downforce, so they made the nose as high as they could and then put a tiny sliver down the the mandated hight, so that they were Legal, but still had the aerodynamic benefit of the high noses. Only 3 teams went for different solutions, one of which, from lotus, was even uglier. It had 2 penisis (one slightly longer than the other) and a massive hole inbetween them. The rules were changed for 2015, and whilst the penis noses were still a thing, they were far less well endowed

All car engines have air intakes. those big intakes on an f1 car are mainly for cooling, the radiators are inside the intakes

It's funny how you think it is scripted. You saying that the producers said it would be funnier if the bridge were to collapse half way... I urge you to watch full episodes of the show. Well, not even the the show. Just watch the specials. You will see that there is nothing planned or scripted except the very basic of things. They capture on film events that can not be planned out in advance. The producers can not say when a cars engine is going to explode, or when a wheel comes off, or when a bridge will collapse. It's impossible to script and plan all that stuff. Do you think the script said "the horse the were using to get fuel from the next village has an erection... Obviously there is some scripted stuff, quite a bit of scripted and pre planned stuff. But it's the moments of real life that happen in between those scripted bits that make the show so entertaining to watch. My Wife is not a car person. She knows less about cars than you do. But, she loves Top Gear.

Well the brake servo is activated which sends brake fluid (oil no not cooking oil lol) actually can be the same oil that the clutch or torque converter uses mind, but it sends it through hoses brake lines to the calipers, it goes into a cylinder where it expands against spring pressure to push pads which ride against the disks, that converts kinetic energy into thermal energy aka heat so the vehicle slows down. Brake drums work the same way only there's a shoe not pads that pushes outwards against the drum mounted on the outside. Also trucks/lorries mostly use air brakes which are the same thing but they use compressed air instead. If they used pure brake fluid then the truck might slow down too fast which could cause a jack knife or the cargo to be pulled forwards too quickly and come loose. And air brakes on high end cars basically create air resistance to aid in braking.

Hydraulics are effectively pneumatics but on steroids as they use liquids mostly oils that can't be compressed unlike a gas, hence you get way more force out of them but at th cost of operational speed.

I'll give it a go: the main difference of a jet engine and a combustion engine. jet engine: generates thrust by generating a very powerful jet flame that thrusts the vehicle forwards combustion engine: turning a crank by having little explosions in the zylinders, and that crank sends power to the weels that makes them turn On a formula 1 car only the vent over the drivers head actually goes into the engine, the vents on the sides are for cooling the engine and (especially in todays cars) they channel air over the rear brake ducts and onto the backwing, which adds pressure to the back tires, increasing grip and thus, making the car accelerate faster, and also of course cooling the brakes, because when those get too hot, they don't function properly. Sometimes you can see little smoke trails coming from the brakes, they actually can catch fire if they're not cooled. That happens when the car goes into a pit stop, right before the race starts and after accidents.

Every car with a combustion engine has a huge air intake, just to cool the engine down. Ever asked yourselve where that massive grill in front of the car is for? For practical and streamlining reaons a F1 car has the air intake close to the engine that is behind the driver.

Onan F1 car the air intake for the engine is above the drivers head. It is designed to scoop up air and create an even pressure for the intake valves. Th intakes at the sides are for air cooling for the engine, each contain a radiator set at an angle to reduce drag.

Car brakes are hydraulic, truck brakes use an engine driven compressor to build up and store air in tanks, which then operate the brakes.

12:15 A formula 1 car, like any other car, burns fuel inside the motor. For the combustion it requires oxygen, a lot! So that's why the air intakes are so massive on a formula 1 car :) It also needs air for cooling the engine, so air flows by and cools the components inside. But it's not the same principle like a jet turbine, as you already noticed. A jet turbine compresses air to generate thrust, by compressing it. In an engine, you need the oxygen just for the combustion. :) Greetings from germany!
