Nowadays in England a club winning the League is more important. But 30 or 40 years ago, winning the FA Cup was widely regarded by the fans as a much bigger deal. Over 700 clubs enter the FA Cup, there are prelim rounds to winnow down the smaller clubs prior to the 1st round proper. Obviously smaller clubs just love the FA Cup as they might win enough in the early rounds and to get a chance to play a big name team many levels above them. That game could mean huge money for a small club from TV money and from gate receipts. Cup games split the gate money equally (45% - 45%) between the two clubs, the other 10% goes to the FA. So, for example, if a tiny semi-pro club from the 6th tier is lucky enough to make it through to the 3rd round proper and get to play away at a Premier league team, then there just might be a crowd of say 50,000 paying £50 a ticket. 45% of that is serious money to a club that usually plays its home games in front of 300 folks paying £8 a ticket.

Winning the league gets you either a spot on the various international cups (like the champions league), or puts you to the next higher division. So it is worth more in the long run. The nation's cup allows teams from all divisions to compete against each other, so it provides a good overview and for a team of a lower division winning the cup means a lot of prestige, the prize money is worth more to them and if they are a mid-tier team (meaning no chance to rise up to the next division) it is a desireable alternative championship. Also winners of the nation's cup may score a spot on the international cup, which means especially for a low-tier team the money jackpot.

Think of it as 'the long game' (league) and the short game (cup). You can get tossed out of the cup for a single poor performance, whereas the league requires consistency throughout the season, and getting relegated means you didn't really get your c**p together during the whole season!

Second division teams literally never win a cup or qualify for one of the three European tournaments (Conference League, Europa League and the prestigious Champions League). An English Team playing in League 1 (3rd division) is professional and can be considered mid-tier; they might or might not have a chance to get promoted. But definitely unlikely to the Premier League and just as unlikely winning the FA Cup. I am much more familiar with German football, my home country though

The league is more important, and when your team loses its chance to win or even gets relegated, it feels genuinely depressing because you've been following the ups and downs for the whole year. But I'd say the cup is more fun. I love it when some obscure team from the middle of nowhere suddenly gets a winning streak against top teams, and it's okay because losing in the cup doesn't mean the world.

A couple of things he did mention , most professional clubs are over 100 years old and generations of fans support them no matter which league division they are in . In England the top two of each division are promoted with the third spot decide by a play off tournament between the next four sides , the finals are played at Wembley . We have two cups although the FA. Cup is the world's oldest and qualifying starts in August among the lowest teams . The big clubs come in the lower professional divisions enter in December and the big clubs in January with the final in May . It's still the most prestigious domestic cup competition with The final broadcast live to many Countries . The league is usually considered most important. To be the best over 38 games really shows you are the most consistently good team in your league. Winning the cup is also important, especially for teams that are not quite able to win over a full season, but who might be able to defeat the best teams over a single game (which most teams in England can, it is a very competitive league when viewed over single games only - anyone can defeat anyone once). It is also quite profitable to win the cup as the prize money is substantial. Winning the Champions League with your club team is like winning the World Cup with your country. It is the highest title your team can get, and it has to be won by defeating the best of the best. This is also where fans finally get to see the biggest teams clash. Games like Bayern Munich - Paris or Liverpool - Barcelona are always gonna get massive viewership when showed on TV.

A typical timeline of a football fan will start in July: with the preseason friendly games, kind of like US exhibition games, this normally means big teams playing in the States or more medium sized teams playing against random opponents they have arranged to play. August: Not long after Champions League and Europa League qualification begins, half of the teams in these competitions have already qualified based on their result the previous season that ended in May, but the final spots are made up of teams that will play each other for the last spots, this is normally a 128ish team knockout, with teams from places like Iceland and Luxembourg in the early rounds with clubs from bigger nations joining in the last few rounds. Brackets don't really exist as its common in football for draws to happen, not draws as in 0-0 2-2, but where names are pulled out of a ball like the lottery to decide the fixtures. After the Qualification begins the leagues often start, not all leagues start at the same time but its normally at some point in August. These will normally be played on weekend, occasionally Mondays/Fridays, and the odd midweek game on Wednesday. Some countries play a super cup to start the season, Superpokal in Germany, Supercopa del Rey in Spain, this is where the League winner plays the Cup winner, this game you'd think from an American perspective would be the biggest game, but most people don't value it highly. A few weeks into the season Cup games which often happen midweek start, these are separate from the league tables and will see teams play teams from other divisions, these are domestic, ie you only play teams from your own country. Cup competitions often predate the league since back in the day leagues where harder to arrange as they required season long commitment from teams rather than playing a few games at a time like a cup. Cup games often lack momentum as they are played weeks apart but they are an important traditional part of football. The league is only valued more as it is the fairest competition, it doesn't have upsets, truly the best team wins, but the cup allows for more underdog stories. September: Champions League/Europa League group stage begins, this will be 6 games, where you play each team twice, similar to how the Bears have to play the Packers, Lions and Vikings twice a season, the groups are random though as different teams, from different countries enter each year. this last from September to about December. October to New Years: The season runs as normal, some countries like England and Scotland have two Cups, one called the Leagues cup, normally its ____ Cup after a sponsor, like Carling Cup, Carabao Cup, Viaplay Cup and the more traditional Cup ie the FA Cup or the Scottish Cup. The traditional one features every team in the country where as the league Cup is only the ''league'' teams, which is a term that describes the top 4 leagues in the country ie the leagues that are fully pro and not semi pro/amateur. This is minor but its important to know. Most places dont do this. January: at this point the season is underway, the Champions League and Europa league group stage will be done and top two teams from the groups of 4 will progress to the knockouts and the 3rd place team in the case of the CL will play an extra round against the 2nd placed EL teams, both tournaments then having 16 teams that will drop to two for the final. at certain weeks during the last 5 months there will have been breaks for national teams to play in friendly matches or against each other to qualify for the World Cup or the Euros(the Euros is the WC but just for European teams, each continent has one). We might also be down to the last 16 or 8 teams in the Cup. The league will be halfway done, we often look at the team who is top of the league at Christmas as the team who will win the league, or if they fall off and choke we say, 'how could you do that you were top at Christmas'. May: Most seasons often end about May, just like how the leagues start at different times they will often end at different times, if the top teams is so dominant that they have more points than the second place teams and the second place cant mathematically catch up they are crowned champion before the League ends. The Cup finals in most countries happen after the last matches of the league have been played, and that ends the domestic seasons in most countries. Teams that finished in the top 4 places in England, Spain, Germany and Italy are now in the Champions league for the next season. Other countries get less spots which is unfair and maybe the only big downside to Football in Europe. The Champions League final will now be played in late May early June. This is at a neutral venue that will be selected ahead of time, like the Superbowl, except tickets aren't a rip off so that only the elites can go. There are no halftime shows and only people who like Football will watch it, you won't have watch parties where people make stupid bets and only watch for the singer, not acceptable behavior. in Europe. After the Champions League the season is over and the preseason games begin a month later. Other things: Transfer of players can only happen during transfer windows, if a player has a contract at a team for say three years and he has only been there a year then he can only move to another team for a fee during the window, these windows normally start at the end of the season and will close a few weeks into the new season, and there is a second window at Christmas to late January. You can sign players outside these time periods but they can only play once the next window starts. These rules are consistent because European football has an Organisation that maintains every thing called UEFA, often labelled UEFA MAFIA by many ultras. They control the Champions League, they are very corrupt but are necessary evil to maintain order. 2 years ago twelve teams from England Spain and Italy tried to break away from UEFA and found their own league and this failed hard because the fans saw that this was only for greed and they protested, and they had to step away from their multi billion dollar plans. Last thing is that every two years Either the Euros happen, or the World Cup happens, this is the biggest and most important event in the whole sport, so pretty much 2/4 years there is no off season, meanwhile the off season of college football lasts 8 months, sheesh. South American seasons start in January due to their seasons being inverted because they are in the Southern Hemisphere, some countries like Japan and the US also do this for their leagues. In Brazil in particular the season starts with state leagues since Brazil is so big it has individual states that are comparable to countries so they play a league competition which last 3 months before the real league starts in about March. Non Brazilian Leagues in the Americas in places like Argentina and Mexico often split the league into two halves with a champion awarded in the middle and at the end so there are two national champions a year plus the cup, I have no clue why this is and this will be foreign to even die hard European football fans but considering Argentina's influence on the world stage with Messi, Maradona, teams Boca Jrs and River Plate and their World Cups I'd thought I'd mention it. Since our northern clubs have much snow in the winter here in Sweden our season is between April and November. Only the league winner may qualify for Champions League while second and third place have to go the long way thru Confederations League just to qualify for Euro League.

For all teams doing well in your league is important, whether is going for the title or getting a high enough position to get access to the european competions or some just staying in that league and not be relegated. For most low level league clubs doing well in the cup is very important (known as having a good cup run), getting a match against a top tier club whether win or lose can make or break that club's season with the money generated from that game possibly being more money that they make in an entire seasons worth of league games. The most important is not to get relegated, cause the financial hit is huge and secondary not to get into financial trouble or go bankrupt cause that means you will be relegated, some clubs as mentioned never recover.

You often have the same team winning both the Premier League and the FA cup in one year but it's more fun if you get two different winners. Before the leagues start again in August there is a game between the two winners, with the proceeds going to charity. If one team has won both, then the second in the league takes their place for this match.

Yes, the cup and the league are independent competitions. The glory (the "what's the bigger deal"-question") varies between countries, but generally, the league will almost always be a bigger deal (it's the longer and tougher competition, and it's less dependent on luck). That said, the cup can be very prestigious in some countries (e.g. the English FA Cup), whereas some countries barely care about it (e.g. Swedish Svenska Cupen).

Winning the league is the major thing; the Cup is less important than it used to be. But, remember, there are 3 or four competitions going on at the same time (if you are also involved in the Champions League), which is why top clubs need to have such big squads and why there is so much football played in a season, especially when you also take into account competitions that involve National teams (World Cup, European Nations Cup, etc). Champions League > League > Cup. The Cups are basically exhibition matches. How seriously you take it depends on many factors, usually if it's your only chance of major silverware, you'll try real hard. It's counted, it's a nice win, but it's not as revered as the other trophies. It's a consolation prize or a nice addition to your campaign. Winning a double or a treble is big, which is when you win two or three of the three trophies in a single year. The cup however gets the whole country involved. It gives a chance for smaller teams to play big teams. It gives a chance for smaller teams to make good money on TV rights for games they'd never normally get. It also shows off the skill difference and "football" difference between divisions. In Europe, in the bigger countries anyway (England, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, etc) there are levels of professionals. Top flight players are earning millions and millions a year. Obnoxious money. Next league down might have a few people earning a one or two million a year, but many hundreds of thousands at least. The next league down from there will be really nice salaries, possibly well into the six figures. The next league down from that might have solid middle-class salaries. The drop off the top flight isn't steep like it is in the US where you either make the big league, or you get a real job.

Of course every team wants to win the league, but this is typically the ambition of 5 or 6 teams who have the resources to win games 7:00 each European league sends their champion from last year as well as the 2-4th place teams (depending on the league). Smaller leagues like Scotland and the Netherlands have to play an extra qualifying game to enter the tournament, as slots are dominated by the top 5 leagues- England,Italy, Spain, France and Germany have half the spots. Frieburg and Bayer Leverkusen finished 5th and 6th so went to the Europa League (RB Leipzig won the cup but qualified for the Champions League, so Leverkusen got their spot). Finally in 7th position were Eintracht Frankfurt, who earned a spot in the European Conference League, the third tier competiton. 9:41 the amateur and semi pro teams enter the Cup at a much earlier stage (July or August) and usually eliminate each other before the real 1st round,where the professional teams enter (except the Premier League). The PL teams enter at the 3rd round and often get drawn against each other then and there. By the time there are 16 teams left, it is a mixture of PL and other professional sides. The cup(s) are a big risk for Premier League sides as they now have so many games in a 3 month window, esp if they are also in Europe.

That 40 Million Dollar drop is NONSENSE. In England, which is the finest league in the World the drop is TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY million Dollars( £200 Million Pounds ). If a great team have bad day in the cup, they're out and mid size teams can go pretty far or even win in the league if they have occasionally exceptionally good matches when it matters. All the competitions are separate. Each domestic League involves the teams from each Division only and determines who consistently plays the best/worst. The English FA Cup is open to the top 10 divisions and is a knock-out competition. The English League Cup is also a knock-out competition open to the top 4 Divisions (92 teams), in 7 Rounds (with the top Division joining in Round 2 and teams competing in Europe joining in Round 3). The European Championship is contested by teams that qualify. The top two teams in the previous season's domestic league automatically qualify. Three further teams (from 12) qualify in play-offs based on their performance in the previous season's domestic league. Eight groups of four teams then play each other twice (home & away). The top two sides from each group then start a knockout phase in Round 16, while the third-placed team drops into the UEFA Europa League. The Europa League gets a bit complicated, but ultimately the winner qualifies for the next European Championship and the UEFA Super Cup. Basically, the domestic league is the most important in each individual country as it allows qualification for other competitions in Europe and kudos for being "the best in the country" for each Division (allowing promotion to a higher league), with each country's version of the FA Cup a close second due to the number of teams involved. Different competitions, with different teams eligible to qualfy, for different bragging rights, benefits and prizes. Apologies for any errors but I'm not really interested in football, but if you want to get experience without being a geeky football nerd I recommend playing a football manager game like FM24.

League is harder to win as it requires sustained quality. It's possible to win a knockout cup if you have a bit of luck. There are often 2 cups in each country too, usually one with more prestige and history. Furthermore, the Champions League is not the only Pan-European club competition. Winning a league, being one of the runner ups, winning a cup will usually book you a place in one the 3 European competitions(Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League). There are preliminary qualification rounds that apply depending on various factors, so clubs from countries like Malta, Cyprus and Former Soviet countries often get knocked out or knocked down to a lower order competition like the Conference League.

The oldest Cup competition I am aware of (for obvious reasons) is the FA Cup in England (FA is Football Association). It is entirely separate from the Football League system. More than 700 clubs participate in it including amateur and semi-professional clubs from lower league levels. The clubs from the top leagues enter the competition at a later stage to give the lower sides a clear run in the early stages.

One thing you need to know about soccer is its very decentralised, not like the way the NFL and NBA have almost a monopoly on pro US Football and Basketball, sure there is FIFA but they dont run things the way the NFL does. Teams are bigger than the leagues themselves, and teams are not owned or controlled by the league they are in, which is why teams compete in multiple competitions, ran by different organisers. Cups also mostly predate leagues, since cups are easier to set up and dont require as much commitment from teams. in England you have the FA Cup ran by the English Football Association (who also run the national team), the League cup, ran by the EFL (English football league who control tiers 2-4 of football in England) and teams will play in Premier League at tier 1 which runs itself. Not having the league own the teams means its not in the best interest of the league to constantly meddle with the clubs to be as profitable as possible, whereas the NFL will try to rebrand and sell or relocate teams in order to increase its own profits, this is also sadly the case for US Soccer, which is ran too similar to the NFL to be considered a seriously league, but hey Messi is there, that'll distract people from its issues.

Speaking from a Portuguese perspective here, regarding the importance of each competition: Yes, the Champions League is the most important club competition in Europe, but it is worth mentioning that only a small fraction of teams are even qualified to play, and even less have significant possibilities of winning it. So, realistically speaking, the national league is the most important competition for most European teams, I would say. Besides that, the league is the competition which decides the most consistent team of the season (which in Europe is viewed as a very important factor) - as opposed to the cup's, that have an elimination format (similar to your playoff's), in which the winner does not necessarily need to be consistent. On the plus side, the cups can sometimes provide some surprises, like lesser known teams defeating the favorites... So, to sum it up, I think even though no one ignores or looks down on any competition, the order would be something like: - Champions league (only for some teams) - National league - Cup - Other competitions like the league cup, or the supercup...

Hi, the cup matches are much less valued at top level than they used to be, but the fans still love them, particularly at the smaller c!ubs. A couple of years ago Tottenham Hotspur found themselves playing a 9th tier team (Marine) placing well over three hundred teams between them in the league system. It is dreams like that that lead supporters like me to shout ourselves horse at extra preliminary round matches in early August ! Also, relegation and promotion is the absolute life blood of football. A well run club can aspire to great things. Fleetwood for instance rising from 9th tier to the third tier, A reformed Accrington going from local leagues (the equivalent of 12th tier) up to 3rd tier. Relegation sucks, of course, but it can give your club a chance to re-build, to start winning again, to develop new players with less expectation and pressure. Way back in prehistoric times the Champions League used to be the European Cup. In this only the champions of each country played (plus the current cup holders ) on a straight random draw knockout basis over 2 legs down to a single Final. Then EUFA figured more money could be made using a league format as described in the video. For this the major leagues (EPL, La Liga, ,Bundesliga , Ligue 1, Serie A) have their top 4 teams playing , allocation of places to countries being decided on previous years performance of participating teams. Other leagues may have 1 or 2 places allocated for automatic group stages whilst the 'minor' leagues take part in a knockout competition (often played before the start of their league season) for the remaining Group Stage places. Many, many , many $$$$ are made in this stage (say ,6 games with 2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses then elimination is still around $23 million in prize money). As for the FA Cup in England , it is full random draw with each league level being added to the draw in successive rounds. Any FA registered club can enter so you could , in theory, have a 3rd round match between Manchester City (the current world champions)and your local pub team if they got lucky. England ,as an example, actually has 2 cup competitions - the FA cup and the League cup (restricted to the 92 Football League clubs) - run in parallel during the season. If a team got lucky and won everything i.e all 4 competitions then they would play around 68 games in about 43 weeks (plus preseason friendlies and international fixtures as appropriate such as Euro and World Cup qualifiers. We do not have a draft, players here will sign at an academy, which is essentially a youth team ran by the bigger clubs. The whole idea of playing sports for a high school team and then getting a college scholarship and then getting drafted is an American invention, most likely done to increase the brand recognition of colleges and make people want to go to them more. The concept of being a rookie doesn't exist, since most players will play at a professional level at as young as 16, maybe in a weaker league before then getting bought by a team from Europe or England. trades dont really happen that much, players are just bought and sold.

Hi Connor, this is all about club football not National teams. In the U.K., as well as trying to win the league, top teams also compete in the F.A. Cup & the League Cup (Sponsor title). Then, they also try to compete in the European competitions, the U.E.F.A. Champions League or (the next best) U.E.F.A. Europa League. As the top teams tend to have stronger squads this should not be a problem, providing players avoid injuries or disciplinary problems. The Cup & Euro games are scheduled between the League games, during the course of the season. This also means teams must use all of their squad, as there are two many important games for the same main players to play in them all. The Lower Leagues also have their own Cup competitions, that only involve those teams from those Divisions. This gives them another & likely better chance, to win a cup competition of their own. Depending on your position in the league at the end of the season, that's what decides what teams are qualified to the Champions League. However, in many countries, the winner of the country's own cup is also rewarded a European spot (Maybe not Champions League, but Europa League or Europa Conference League possibly) and that's also another shot for the club to be successful and get some money to the club. It's also the charm there that it might not even be a team in the first division that wins that spot (although that is pretty rarely it doesn't happen). There are no Soccer Leagues in Europe. They are Football Leagues. There are two Cup competition in England, the FA (Football Association) Cup which any team in England that is affiliated to the FA can enter and the League Cup (Called the Carabao Cup) which is only open to the League teams. When a team goes bust, ie they run out of money and cant afford their stadium/player wages, they essentially no longer exist and get kicked out of not just their own league but the whole pyramid. This would be the end of the team in any other sport but in football fans care about their clubs too much to let them get forgotten just for losing too much money, so the fans will often come together to revive the club and they will start again at a lower tier and work their way back up, this has happened to some pretty big teams in Italy and once in Scotland as well as to smaller teams in England. A cup is a bunch of one off games in which anything can happen and a bad day at the office means your kicked out, where as the league is based on a teams performance over a whole season which is why the winner is the one who accumulates the most points. One is a long stretch and the other is a bunch of one off win or lose games spread throughout the season

Winning the League is far more important than the cup. Both are great to get, but the league is a lot better to win.

The league is harder to win and higher standing cups are secondary importance .but also give rights to participate in european cups . there used to the europa cup 2 that was for cup winners. Cups are an extra competition , that has an own champion . both champions of the league and cup will play a super cup , as opener for the new league season . and braging rigths for who was the better out of the 2 . Cup competitions are quite different in mindset and play style than league games. Some nations also have a league cup mixed in that only applies for the league it self.
