Doug you're preaching to the choir here. I have a 384 sq/ft cabin on 10acres and live 100% off rain water with a sawdust toilet, propane for cooking and heat and a small 50A service. I have a small solar system and if necessary a small woodstove to install in a pinch. Been about four years and still working on it. edit to add: for those nay sayers... Now I live in a (12×32) 348sq ft. shed and I will be working on solar next. Insulation, keeping propane and a small solar setup is my main task now. Best move I ever made. Peace and quiet. CONGRATULATIONS! Great job! Get your water source done! I saw an episode of Homestead Rescue, they used a window pane, made a box and it sweated out good water! Made Air conditioner from a big pipe buried in the ground, with a pipe up to a vent with small screen in the vent to prevent anything coming into your house! It amazed me how they did it without electricity OR solar! We wish you the best. Check out that show, they have so many great ideas. I love you Doug! I'm an Army combat veteran of OIF/OEF and have been just absolutely fed up with the rat wheel. I've always had a garden, canned food and hunted/fished. Here recently I just reached a breaking point with the system, and walked off my job site and have no interest in returning to the system of working my tail off to make someone else rich while I am scraping by week to week. I live in south central Missouri, and have already been using your vast amount of knowledge to plan my next year. I live on 10 acres, with 2 very small ponds and about 5 acres of woods. I have been raising chickens and rabbits, hunt deer, raccoon, and squirrel on the land. I have an extended family household. My grandfather, father, step mother, my daughter and myself. My grandfather and I are full time on the property. We are building our first greenhouse for this spring. Building a hoop greenhouse with cattle panels. Missouri just passed recreational cannabis, so that is a great opportunity for us to make money on our land with that. But thank you so much for sharing your learned lessons of off grid living. It has been a tremendous help to me in my journey to being self sufficient. Again, I love you and keep on keeping on brother!

When we did buy a house we got a small 2 bedroom on some land (back when things were cheap). When I got pregnant with our surprise miracle baby I was shocked how many people asked if we were getting a bigger house. We have 2 bedrooms, why would we need a bigger house. He's 2 now and we've added two giant dogs and a few cats, still doing fine. It's funny what people think they "need" in today's world.

The great news is there's an amazing fireplace, very inexpensive and for poor people like you and I I'm talking about $200. You'll have to find someone to help you it's called a rocket furnace. They are thermal Mass heaters which means they heat up something like a sitting bench the duct work runs through It and when the fire goes out the bench continues to heat the area but they burn 100% clean or maybe 98% clean no smoke comes out of the fireplace you can't even see that someone's burning a fire. Hi Doug, great video as always. Thank you! About solar... my wife and I took a 7x14 ft cargo trailer and converted it into a bug out wagon. We blend in because our rig looks like a work trailer. So we put two 250 watt solar panels on the roof and they plug into a 500watt jackery. It runs the basics.. cell, computer and tv. 2000 watts is my recommendation. Amazon sells the Jackery.. check it out. We have been living in our rig for 3 years. We downsized from a 3 bedroom 3 car garage. We wouldn't go back to the grid for nothing!!! Stay Freeeeeee!
@ronalddaub5008 Жыл бұрын
I have been an electrical engineer I have worked in the field. I know about solar some people think the power comes directly from the panel. The power comes from the panels to a converter box to change it to where it can charge a battery anytime you want to use alternating current the battery has to be hooked to an inverter. my point is Facebook and other things have fooled so many people into thinking solar this solar that but they don't know anything about what's in between the solar panel and the outlet no matter what voltage you use

I am 70 & husband is 80 with 100 disability. We downsized to a 1,000 sq ft log home close to town so we are on city sewer but we are out in country some what with no neighbors. Have a well. House is all electric & came with wood stove. I had a standby generator installed using propane tank to run it that I bought as well. So if the power goes out during storms we can keep everything running. Let’s hope propane is always available to buy. We have 3 acres here that came with 2 raised beds & I have added a lot more raised beds. I bought metal Beds from Amazon. I compost all kitchen scraps. I can with a water bath & I have a pressure canner too. I learned to clarify butter like Stacy showed. I also bought a dehydrator & dried peas, green beans & herbs I grow. Less space taken in freezer. We have 2 apple trees so I canned & made applesauce, apple butter, canned apples for pies. I’d like to get chickens but the feed is expensive. I’m limited to what I can do so I have to pay someone to do it if I can’t do it myself. We have a pole shed that I have large amounts of paper products & soaps. I’ve always been a bit of a prepper. I stocked up on ammo & have some protection I know how to use. I Say do what you can afford & pray.

But I can see the water from every spot in my yard, and the front windows of my house. It’s in a subdivision but no HOA and from what I can figure the house was built between 1925-1945. It was cheap, on the beach and no HOA. Surrounded by farms in the middle of nowhere. Watch the movie Brigadoon, that pretty much describes the location.

@@yvonneledesma it’s desolate up there in the winter. If you’re not used to below zero and ice, ice and more ice you probably won’t like it. We tried that living on the farm/growing your own thing but it’s hard work and if you need to leave for any length of time you need someone like Eb from Green Acres looking after things for you. Logistics of moving off grid: 1. build a home - Doug built their home ...in one season, I think, ...using on-site trees to mill lumber for a log cabin. A good solution. I am working on a FastBuild design that would go together and be "up and running" rather quickly (30 days) and be ready for winter in less than 6 months, and have enough room to store vitals. I have a FastBuild barn, too. The key barrier I am hitting - although several states "do not enforce" building codes outside of city limits ...the codes are there, and one troublesome neighbor can hurt you badly by just filing a complaint. I have actually seen this happen. Okay, so, item 2. Taxation - The epic crazy over-inflated housing market is sending property taxes through the roof. During the Great Depression, most small farmers lost their property, not to lenders, but for failure to pay property tax. Watch out for Texas. I live on a 1/3rd of an acre and pay $4k/yr! Be careful about choosing your site. Listen to every problem the homesteaders on KZbin hit.

Living in an off grid environment I learned pdq that dish soap uses your water up very quickly. So I learned to use a spray bottle with vinegar 3:1 water to vinegar to clean most stuff with recycled t shirt napkins. Then for grease or scrambled egg pans and other things that need scrubbed I used baking soda paste. And it's definitely easier to clean something as soon as your done using it rather than later after it's dried on gunk. I used a solar panel and one battery. Had plenty night lights, charging tool batteries... Living very small is better than living a big mess

We've been living in an off grid Skoolie that we stripped and converted in 2.5 months. It's bare bones basic but it functions great. Just passed our 1 year mark. Everything Doug says here is true! You learn so much about how much water you really need, how much power things actually consume, how to live with much less stuff ( and in a much smaller space), how to diversify your essentials like heat sources and cooking methods, reduce your trash, and so much more. It's been challenging to say the least but also extremely rewarding. We can change locations at any time , and when the time is right, we plan to grab a nice chunk of land and use the skills we've learned to build our own homestead. I've learned a ton from your videos thanks guys!!! ❤️

@@nulledrust9809 well I don't personally have any of the things you mentioned....no black tank, awning, propane appliances, etc. And I have a space to rent that's not part of a campground and not boondocking on public lands. Don't travel right now so no worries about any of the road stuff, tires or fuel costs. More like a tiny home situation...that I handpicked and personally designed so I can easily repair and replace just about anything. Kept it all super simple. That's the cool thing about buses... they're built like tanks compared to traditional motor homes. And you can strip them out and do things however you want.

@johndukes30792 жыл бұрын
I lived off-grid for two years and loved the experience itself, unfortunately the people that ran the place were still stuck in a parasitic material mindset and 85% of the people that moved there eventually left. I held on as long as I could but was forced out after breaking my back. If you choose to go off-grid with a group, don’t do it with anyone that cannot maintain a healthy relationship with other people for more than ten years. If a person has no old friends, it’s usually because they are toxic. I’m currently working to go off grid on another nice piece of property of 64 acres. It takes time and careful planning and this channel is a godsend of helpful information. Thank you Doug and Stacy.
@johndukes30792 жыл бұрын
The problems of this particular off-grid “farm” are entirely with the people renting the land. They still want to live from the work of others without adding anything of value. I understand what you’re saying about the solar business, there are a lot. And the tech itself depreciates too quickly. You spend $65,000 on a solar set-up one year, and three years later the system is worth $20,000. What I’m warning about are people that pose as good people like Doug and Stacy, convincing people to move to their property for the sole purpose of exploiting their labor. If you can’t afford to go off-grid by yourself, and are looking for people to start a collective with, be sure that those people have old friends. Ask for references from people they have known and had relationships with, and if they refuse or can’t, keep away from those people. Especially if everyone they know has only known them for a few years.

Great Video Doug! My family (4 adults plus a dog) actually spent 2 years (2018 to 2020) traveling the country to explore locations for our off grid location. We didn't go the RV route but did do AIRBNB the whole time which worked out great. We actually saved money by doing this which allowed us to get intimate with certain areas before deciding to purchase our land. We stayed in a lot of different places with unusual accommodations which forced us to adjust to close quarters and become mindful of our surroundings which was challenging but turned out to be wonderful experiences. We are thankful for the opportunity and learned a lot about what we took for granted in life and woke up to what we didn't need. I highly recommend the "travel" aspect and would have loved the RV experience too. I encourage anyone looking to transition to take this advice. God Bless!
